Pasila is a satirical Finnish animated series about the daily lives of the policemen at the Pasila precinct in Helsinki. The series' main character is Inspector Kyösti Pöysti, a highly self-centered, dysfunctional individual who is always sucking on a pacifier for unknown reasons. His unruly behaviour and unconventional methods while investigating crimes are often a source of ire for his boss, Rauno Repomies, an elderly police captain bordering on senility. Pöysti's colleagues include his former Police Academy classmate Neponen, a manly policewoman Helga who has anger management issues, and Desk Sergeant Pekka Routalempi, a dull little man who finds every little mundane thing "fascinating". Annoying TV presenter Juhani Kontiovaara also keeps butting in Pöysti's business, when in search of cheap thrills and other ways to improve his ratings.Pasila became hugely successful due to its hilarious characters and slapstick humor, with six seasons running from 2007-2013. The sixth season was stated to be the last one, but a self-proclaimed Spin-Off called Pasila 2.5 started airing in February 2014, which ran for four seasons ending in 2016.Episodes with English fansubs can be found from YouTube and there is also an official English dub of the series, known as Jefferson Anderson, with only the first two seasons having been dubbed into English. There is a character page here.

Misplaced Wildlife: In an episode when Repomies is shown with increased concern of dying, Pöysti interrupts one of his rants with "Relax, you're still in good shape!". Cue Rule of Funny taking effect when Repomies points out the vulture hopping around behind him, pointing out that none of them live in Finland and then stating how his "stench of death has attracted them all the way from America!" See the entry for Weirdness Censor below for a more literal example.

Diet Episode: One of the final episodes of the Spin-Off involves a formerly Fat and Proud victim who was content to spend his days driving around grocery stores with his mobility scooter to gather massive amounts of junk food and consume it en masse watching TV, but who was then kidnapped by a fitness guru who finally wanted to come up with a diet that actually worked on even the most massive of hambeasts: she imprisoned him in a sealed-off basement for 6 months and forced him to do massive workouts every day and only fed him health smoothies, with the end result being a muscular, toned Adonis that she was planning to use to promote her new diet and who passing women fawn over and the Pasila policemen consider to be extremely handsome. Naturally, the victim's justifiable claims of being subjected to a kidnapping and extended torture fall on deaf ears when they all think the kidnapper did him a huge favor after seeing and hearing about his life before that, when he himself couldn't really care about all the attention women are giving him and he's far more traumatized about the sudden inability to eat more than 2 burgers at a time due to his shrunk stomach.

Reluctant Retiree: Repomies, in an episode where he was deemed too senile to run the station anymore, mostly because he can't think of anything else he'd rather be doing with his time. All attempts to try out new things fail for various reasons, such as being chased off of a bingo table due to not having enough "retirement cred" at that point and getting frustrated with another old woman who kept yelling "bingo!" during every single number and started screaming about being robbed or murdered whenever Repomies tried to correct her on the rules.

He ultimately loses out to Repomies, because she feels old when spending time with Pöysti, whereas Repomies's endless droning about his youth occasionally makes her feel young.

Non-Indicative Name: Despite being a self-proclaimed Spin-Off, Pasila 2.5 isn't really that different from the original series to really warrant being called a spin-off over just being the next set of seasons for the show: the only real differences to the previous seasons are the addition of Darja and Pöysti having a different voice actor. Sure, the Pasila police station gets demolished in the first episode of Pasila 2.5, but since it's back by the end of the episode, the event qualifies as a Snap Back at most.

Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: In one episode Pöysti's new neighbor is revealed to be this. He's been lacking in common sense for his entire life and lucking out in creating a hugely successful iPhone app and striking it rich just made him worse: he has a handlebar mustache and wears a bowler hat with a track suit and owns a pet swan which he keeps in his ball pit. His sister has also been conditioned into being able to interpret his fragmented 2-word sentences into much longer wholly legible ones. It also turns out that he's the main culprit of the episode who shot the victim just because his left shoe annoyed him in some way.

In another episode Helga turns out to be not as much of a man-hater she's portrayed as when she participates in a sting operation involving an elderly Casanova and is insulted that the man stole her diamond necklace and ran off while she was pretending to take a shower instead of waiting until they had sex. Routalempi further demonstrates that even his mild-manneredness has a breaking point when a guy driving an expensive German sports car purposefully crashes through his house when Routalempi wouldn't make a police report of his neighbour badmouthing his car online.

Then he kicks a chair out of frustration and it rebounds off a wall into the suspect, he starts apologizing profusely. Later, another suspect is brought in and Repomies attempts the shin-kicking method again and gets a confession. Pöysti points out that he just made up the said information just to make Repomies stop. When Repomies doesn't believe him, Pöysti demonstrates by making up an alternate interpretation of events and starts beating the suspect's head in with a chair until the perp agrees that his address is the correct one. Once the situation switches over to Jack Bauer Jofa Interrogation Technique, he threatens to move on to power tools and frozen beavers, which seems to visibly shake the suspect. Before the perp can spill any actual info however, his lawyer barges in and anesthetizes him to the point that he's immune to all and any pain.

Stag Party: One episode revolves around Neponen renewing his wedding vows, which naturally involves Pöysti having to arrange one for him with three of his friends. They have plenty of experience for throwing such parties and know that while the generic "get drunk, do something stupid and risky that ends in a trip to the ER" party has been done over and over again, it's what the party will ultimately devolve into anyway, as better and more unique ideas are ridiculously expensive and all the cheaper ones aren't worth doing. Pöysti still doesn't believe them and comes up with several unique ideas, but all of them are a combination of something extremely dangerous, physically impossible, utterly illegal or unrealistically expensive, forcing him admit defeat and go with the default option.

Planet of Steves / Inexplicably Identical Individuals: The Saksalas are an example of this. They all look identical, more or less wear the same kind of clothing, work in an office job and sound the same. This is lampshaded by Repomies, wondering out loud how many Saksalas there are. Later, when one of them who happen to visit the police station with a matter related to the case of the week, he's ignored completely. Instead, the characters start talking about all the Saksalas in general, the sightings of whom they've turned into their own Collectible Card Game.

Played slightly more straight when Pöysti's newly found teratoma brother gets infected and ends up torn off while he's still against the idea of having it removed. While he claims he doesn't miss it one bit and that anyone who gets emotionally attached to a clump of inanimate meat is even more emotionally handicapped than he is, the episode still ends in a mostly-serious montage of him wandering around depressed watching various brother pairings having fun while He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother plays.

Minor Injury Overreaction: A side plot in one of the early episodes: Pöysti spots a mole on his arm, freaks out and visits several doctors over the course of the episode. Subverted to a degree in that his exact state of distress varies wildly depending on the type of doctor diagnoses him even though most of them claim it to be harmless. A hospital physician leaves him worried because he doesn't take Pöysti seriously as he's apparently shown the exact same mole to him twice. Another one says it's extremely serious, but he just causes Pöysti to think there's nothing to worry about since he didn't come across as competent to him. A doctor at a private clinic does manage to calm his nerves since Pöysti thinks he's being paid to be professional, and a countryside doctor further makes him feel at ease since he comes off as being "down to earth" to Pöysti. Another episode takes a turn for Major Injury Underreaction instead: after the speeder Makkonen runs over Pöysti, it causes a previously hidden teratoma to pop up and appear on his shoulder. When he finds out what it is, he starts treating the lump as an actual long-lost brother and won't have it removed even when it gets badly infected and threatens his life.

Aluminum Christmas Trees: invokedPöysti weaponizes this against Routalempi when he's assigned to keep him and Neponen in a jail cell on Repomies' orders by getting him to agree to let them out if he tells Routalempi the "world's most fascinating thing" and he admits it tops all other fascinating things he knows about: Pöysti then proceeds to point out that all currently existing common bananas are mutant cultivars of two inedible species of bananas, on the verge of extinction since they can only reproduce via cultivars and thus they're all genetically identical with each other, which also contributes to the previous point due to them being more prone to diseases. Routalempi quickly checks it online and instantly lets them out, musing stunnedly about the "identical mutants in my breakfast cereal" afterwards.

True Art Is Incomprehensible: In-universe. Embodied by Reetta Ruusu, whose idea of interpretive dance consists of titles such as "Vagina Dialogue", "The three rooms of manic depression" and "A placenta-eating bourgeoisie subjugates Jeanne d'Arc's lesbian twin sister", while the shows themselves consist of simply wandering around the stage while torturing oneself in lots of imaginative ways. While Pöysti hates Reetta's guts and is unable to stop her from going through with the show like he was initially told to do due to how she constantly endangers herself and her dancers in the rehersals and blows up large chunks out of the buildings she does the show in to "fix the acoustics", he still ultimately goes to see hew show and is actually mesmerized by what he sees, considers it to be a masterpiece with nothing to add or to take away from it and is about to experience some form of personal enlightenment... when Reetta suddenly drops dead on the stage and is revived afterwards.

No Medication for Me: Repomies tries this once in an early episode, even though being medicated doesn't have any drawbacks in his case - he just wants to find out what ultimately happens if he just keeps on rambling uninhibited. Cue Repomies jumping on his desk and his closet while rambling about monkeys and gorillas and their understanding of theory and practice and space-time continuum, until finally running out of steam and ending up lying on his couch while holding his aching head and telling himself to calm down. Also the easy rationale for why he later has to retire for the space of one episode; he gets too weird, even by earlier standards, when he decides not to take his medication at all any more.

Sanity Ball: Bounced around something fierce. Neponen is usually the most rational one, but he's also the only one besides Pöysti himself who thinks Pöysti is a genius. Pöysti may be the sanest one in turn when cynicism is called for in the face of something stupid that people find compelling. Repomies likes to point out Pöysti's problems and denials to the point that he sometimes has to admit them, only to immediately throw the imaginary ball back at Pöysti and start talking complete nonsense. Routalempi is usually shown as pretty useless and clueless, but he's also probably the happiest person around in contrast to everyone else's attitude problems. Helga, on the other hand, isn't usually drawn into the same petty arguments the rest of the characters often find themselves in and often ignores anything that doesn't directly distract her from her work, but as a result, she generally has a single-track mind and if any solution to any given situation involves violence in any way, she'll take it without question.

Placebotinum Effect: A reverse version of this takes place in an episode where all the liquor stores in Finland end up being closed due to the threat of poisoned booze. A researcher theorizes that the people of Finland are so used to being drunk on Friday nights that they'll attain a state resembling drunkenness at that time even if they haven't drunk any alcohol at all. Not even the researcher himself believes in it, but miraculously enough, it actually does happen at a critical moment. Unfortunately the effect only lasts for a few minutes before it wears off, instantly restarting the conflict.

Moving the Goalposts: Done by Repomies to Pöysti when he's about to go on a vacation and Repomies's relatives end up being somehow involved with a recently-opened legal brothel, and he tells Pöysti he can't leave until each one of them is dealt with, threathening to put up a website detailing Pöysti's exploits with a hooker working with said brothel who he had sex with while drunk and without knowing she was a prostitute. To be fair, Repomies is not doing it entirely to abuse his power, but whenever Pöysti gets one of them away from the place, another one pops up, either to be forced into working there, signs up to work there voluntarily, or just visits as a customer. Pöysti ultimately turns it against him by threathening to put up a website of his own about how all of Repomies' relatives are sex-obsessed maniacs who can't stay away from brothels, forcing Repomies to give up and finally let Pöysti go on his vacation.

Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: A well-employed gag in the series. In one of Kontiovaara's infamous morning talk shows: "And for that reason, steer clear of drugs, booze and modern jazz." Pöysti lists a collection of cybercrimes committed by a teen to the kid's father, including "defamation, inciting theft, inciting murder, threat, illegal threat, spreading around instructions for making nuclear bombs, aggravation against an ethnic group, attempted seduction of minors and blowing raspberries at people" There's also a drink menu Pöysti reads at one point: "Black Russian, Mint Black Russian, An Unemployed Arse, Drowning Somali, Stupid Swede, Chinese Famine, Estonian Abortion... and cut brandy." He then wonders if, as a cop, he should do something about those names. Repomies is a common source for these:

Exposition Break: Pöysti is a fan of these and they usually involve his current theory about the episode's criminal or a group of people central to it, often involving fitting visuals. Lampshaded when he initially objects to Pöysti doing it again in one episode of season 3, but since he already began and they're already in the process of being carried away by Flashback Effects, he has no choice but to go along with it.

Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: More or less the main concept behind an episode. Repomies sends the crew after Helga's aging father, because he's been bragging about posessing tons of weapons without a license. When they come for his guns, he barricades himself inside his home along with several of his friends, old flames and army buddies. Also a part of another episode, where the criminal in question alternately encourages and discourages the elderly to act like this, because of an over-elaborate scheme he has.

Never Speak Ill of the Dead: Stretched to a breaking point in one episode: a musician is announced to be dead and everyone save for Pöysti and the artist's brother (which naturally ends up with both of them getting in trouble) fondly reminisce about his past accomplishments, even though nobody can remember any of his songs beyond his single hit nor did they buy any of his records, and they probably wouldn't remember the one hit song either if it wasn't being played on the radio. In fact, when it turns out that he faked his own death in a desperate attempt to make people remember him and buy at least SOME of his records so he wouldn't have to live in poverty, he's immediately labeled as a self-absorbed dickhead who deserves to be forgotten immediately.

Jurisdiction Friction: Subverted: soon after Pöysti and Neponen arrive on the scene of a large-scale diamond heist, the Finnish Security Police do so as well. They tell the Pasila crew to leave the case to them, which Pöysti is actually happy for, since he doesn't feel like working in the slightest at the moment. Also parodied, as one of the cops from the other bureau tells them to stop arguing about jurisdictions regardless. Repomies later gives Pöysti a rant about how the police should always argue jurisdictions, then charge in alone and take down the bad guys just like John McClane.

Insane Troll Logic: Frequently employed by most characters in the show. And often lampshaded: When questioned about their current brand of ITL, their replies generally consist of "With logic!" and "With a very delusional person's logic!" In one episode a mob crew ends up committing group suicide, because it means the snitch they are after will keep looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life. Repomies is forced to retire in one episode, and he picks Pöysti as his successor after rattling on about what a horrible underling he is - simply because he was the last guy he told his goodbyes to, and didn't want to start tracking back the line.

Blah, Blah, Blah: Used occasionally by various characters to cut their speeches short when they feel like they've already made their point clear. Amusingly enough, Kontiovaara also uses this once while he's doing his usual introduction to his show, though considering the scene is seen from Pöysti's POV, he might just be hearing his normal speech as this.

Shout-Out
 Pasila / int_c75df49a
comment
Shout-Out: In addition to the ones linked elsewhere on this page, here's a good number of more minor ones: In the episode "Stalker", a disillusioned stalker says this to his victim: "You aren't anything I thought you'd be! I can't introduce a woman like you to my mummified mother, who lives in the basement!" The leader of a heist crew in an early episode is referred to as Jaska Jokunen, the Finnish name for Charlie Brown. One of the things Pöysti makes the other characters do when he's temporarily made the new police chief and is abusing his power is making them say "Purple monkey dishwasher" in Finnish, a reference to the end result of a "broken telephone" game in The Simpsons. When Repomies accidentally kicks a chair into suspect's head, he apologizes and asks if he wants some Jaffa. Instead of being a nonsensical reference to Stargate, it's referring to the unproven urban legend about a Finnish soft drink called Jaffa, said to be able to relieve stomach pain...but it wouldn't have made any difference anyway since the subject was hit in the head. Jack Jofa's last name in the 24 parody episode is a reference to Jack Bauer's last name. Both Jofa and Bauer are manufacturers of sporting equipment. In one episode, Repomies blabbers about "Rauno's juice party ending badly when the Black Angel takes him away". This is a reference to Finnish musician Tuomari Nurmio and his song "Musta enkeli" ("Black Angel"). Also from the same episode: In season 3, episode 7, Pöysti mocks bank robbers for their lack of preparation and makes a reference to Ocean's Eleven in regards of a possible method of pulling off the heist while doing so. In one episode, Pöysti complains about the "newest Bond movie" to the ticket vendor in a movie theatre. Said vendor looks and sounds a lot like the Squeaky Voiced Teen in The Simpsons and is also working at the same job SVT's been seen in. The entrance of the main building of the Finnish National Football Association is guarded by a pair of stormtroopers. Pöysti meets a bunch of sports groupies in the same episode. One of them acts as a spokesperson and the rest of them just agree to everything she says with an exclamation of "Ni!" (which actually is one way to voice your agreement in Finnish). Pöysti calls them "the whores who say Ni!" after he rounds them up. One of Pöysti's Dream Sequences is a blantant reference to Casablanca. Episode "Non, je ne regrette rien" is an episode-long Shout-Out to Inception and films of M. Night Shyamalan. Also in the same episode: A Straw Critic by the name of Peter von Schnabb. He's named after well-known Finnish movie expert Peter von Bagh, but also bears a a passing resemblance to Roger Ebert. In one episode, after Repomies attempts to stop Routalempi from investigating police archives because they might have dirt about him in there, he proceeds to toss down a smoke bomb and shoots a Grappling-Hook Pistol into the ceiling, with its hook shaped like a Batarang. Finnish grocery company Saarioinen has a long-standing slogan of "Our moms cook so yours don't have to." One episode twists the slogan into "Our moms shit so yours don't have to". In the episode "Virginia Heartbreaker", the owner of the Virginia Woffelhouse restaurant is a man by the name of Reino K. Sepultura. When Repomies is undergoing his Disney Acid Sequence mentioned above, the song that plays during it and the characters dance to is "Twiggy" by Pizzicato Five.

Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Subverted in the episode "Salaviina", when Pöysti is getting hysterical over the lack of alcoholic drinks in the entire Finland and the knowledge that he won't be able to get drunk come the weekend. Played more straight in another episode when Pöysti's emotional side is exposed via personal knowledge of crying people, which makes him emotional as well: He is about to start crying right outside the door of an elderly scam victim and asks Neponen to slap him. Parodied when the scam victim slaps him too to stop him from shouting in the hallway.

Murder Simulator: The everpresent game Pöysti and Neponen play, giving out missions like "Johnson, the United Nations secretary is corrupt. It also doesn't seem to punish the players when they blast their way through what is implied to be a Stealth-Based Mission, only chastising them with a "Johnson, you killed everybody! Now cover it up, you sick bastard, you!" Lampshaded by Pöysti when the game gives him a mission to waterboard someone, not because of a crime committed, but because the player character just wants to know if they'd happen to know anything interesting:

Drugs Are Bad: The main theme for one episode that culminates in each character unsuccessfully lecturing a classroom about them. Pöysti fails because he promotes alcohol as a better option for escapism. Repomies fails because he gets pissed off at the students throwing wads of paper at him, causing him to start swearing and throwing a whiteboard eraser back at one of them, mistaking it for a soft blackboard sponge. Helga fails because she instantly calls a female student a slut after she asks her the generic "can you get pregnant from kissing" question. Neponen is never even considered for the task because "he supports Pöysti and is suspicious". Routalempi accidentally manages to save the day by constantly getting distracted by modern school equipment while lecturing. His behavior causes the entire class to think he's an ex-junkie and they sign up for anti-drugs groups in fear of becoming like him.

Self-Made Man: What the businessmen that keep getting suckered by scammer Pauli Mutikkala consider themselves to be, at least according to one of Pöysti's theories: They don't care as much about losing their cash as they do about not coming off as smart and business-savvy. Therefore, they refuse to report him to the police because that'd mean they'd admit they would've made an error in judgment.

Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: A customer at a store wants to know why they're not selling a specific brand of raspberry pie anymore. The cashier tells him that "Nobody bought it...plus it tasted bad...and some kids died when they ate it." He still insists on wanting to buy some afterwards.

Burger Fool: The restaurant chain Virginia Woffelhouse turns out to be an inverse version of this: Instead of being a soulsucking hellhole for its employees, the sole Finnish franchise owner instead wants to indirectly ruin the lives of all hicks and boring average joes with their ridiculously unhealthy burgers since nobody would want to eat at his overpriced gourmet restaurant.

Evil Plan: Reversed. A legitimately threatening-sounding Mad Bomber of the episode has no such plan beyond getting some extra cash and drops his initial demand of half a million euros down to just 1000 euros and a bottle of booze, as his credibility keeps taking hits. A pair of brothers plan to punch every person on the planet. It involves getting everybody on two lines by baiting them with pesto, and them driving between the lines both arms out.

Mushroom Samba: More or less an entire episode is devoted to this, where it manifests in what Pöysti calls "Phil Collins-hangover": the specifics being that the combination of an extremely annoying person and an extreme hangover causes Pöysti to see everyone with the head of the said annoying person, and the person who initially triggered this was, you guessed it, Phil Collins. Another variety of this is shown later in the form of the Virginia Heartbreaker, a ridiculously unhealthy hamburger that consists of six hamburger buns deep-fried in boiling syrup, four 2-pound steaks made from a cow fed entirely with gasoline, cheese breaded with cotton candy, and a whole package of bacon still in its plastic wrapping and just taking a single bite of it causes whoever eats it to experience a heart attack-induced Disney Acid Sequence.

Get-Rich-Quick Scheme: The specialty of Pauli Mutikkala. All of them basically boil down to "attach a printer that prints stock market figures to an animal cage, let the animal in question tear the prints to shreds, pick up the shreds that are still legible afterwards and invest in those stocks". This is clearly a take on the 2003 WinCapita pyramid hoax in Finland.

Haunted House: One of the Spin-Off episodes revolves around one owned by Repomies. He's trying to sell it, but it seems to be haunted by sketch characters created by Finnish comedian Vesa-Matti Loiri. Pöysti actually ends up being possessed by them at the end of the episode and is filmed that way with his smartphone camera, complete with glowing eyes, only for it to turn out that Pöysti had left an app on that turns everyone viewed with the camera into a llama and replaces their speech with bleating.

Running Gag

comment
Running Gag: Several, including but not limited to: The briefing slides. In addition to showing Mrs. Repomies in indecent situations, people often tend to screw up with them in less disturbing ways, such as Pöysti using too many zeroes when describing the losses of unreported employment, apparently noticing it too late and crossing them out. Whenever one of the main characters appear in Kontiovaara's show, they're always doing something embarrassing, like Repomies screaming with a crazed expression or Pöysti taking a leak against a tree while drunk out of his mind. The movie Amélie often ends up working its way into Pöysti's rants as one of the things he can't stand, especially if he's out on a date. Another character also states at one point that watching it countless times with his girlfriend is one of the numerous sacrifices he has to make to ultimately make his girlfriend happy. Pöysti never gets Neponen's first name right. This annoys Neponen greatly, given that he's pretty much Pöysti's best and only friend. During Pöysti's half-year holiday in Far East, he doesn't really grow up as a person, but after he returns, he FINALLY gets Neponen's first name right. Pöysti borrowing money from Neponen, or telling him to buy him a pizza. People asking Pöysti why is he wearing a pacifier, to which Pöysti answers sarcastically. Mostly used in earlier episodes. Most episodes end with Pöysti and Repomies arguing on the roof. At some point Pöysti gets fed up and leaves, after which Repomies continues his monologue, which gets more delusional by every sentence. When Pöysti or another character tells someone else to not do something and they do it anyway, they'll always follow it up with "there, you went and did <whatever action Pöysti/another character told them not to do>"

Interactive Narrator: One variation of Pöysti's hangover voices, this one being the result of listening to a nature documentary about bullfrogs, who then naturally switches over to narrating Pöysti's life in a similar manner.

Brick Joke: Pöysti tries to make a point by describing a situation where two opposing religious leaders are having an argument and get crushed by a falling piano. Repomies is utterly confused why a piano would fall on both of them out of the blue, but leaves the matter be when Pöysti states that it's irrelevant. Skip to the very end of the episode, where said people are standing next to each other outdoors, agreeing with the basic concepts of their religious views... and are prompty crushed by a falling piano. In one episode, Repomies rambles about his funeral. Among other things, he notes that maybe someone else gets buried alive with him. While he never dies on the show, the final episode does include a segment about his funeral; And Pöysti jumps into the coffin with him.
