Spoilers for The First Part are unmarked. You Have Been Warned! The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is a 2019 CGI animated space action comedy. It is the sequel to 2014's The LEGO Movie, with Phil Lord & Chris Miller again writing the script (with Raphael Bob-Waksberg of Bojack Horseman fame providing uncredited rewrites) and Mike Mitchell of Trolls and Sky High fame taking the director's chair.Five years after the events of the DUPLO invasion, the town of Bricksburg has fallen into ruins, becoming known as Apocalypseburg. The people who live there have hardened their hearts and toughened up... except The Special himself, Emmet Brickowski, who continues to be hopeful that one day everything will be awesome again. Tragedy strikes when a new threat from a far-off world abducts Emmet's five best friends, prompting him to spring into action to rescue them. Transforming his house into a spaceship, he gives chase and follows the invaders to parts unknown, crossing paths with Rex Dangervest, an intergalactic raptor trainer who may be able to teach him how to be the tough, fierce warrior he needs to be to get his friends back.Meanwhile, Lucy and the others are taken to the mysterious Systar System, where they meet the many colorful creatures there, including talking candy, an attractive non-threatening teenage vampire and a shapeshifting queen who's totally not at all evil. Nope, definitely not. Not buying it for a second, Lucy takes it upon herself to find out the secrets of this place before it's too late.Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, and Charlie Day return to reprise their roles from the first movie, with newcomers Tiffany Haddish and Stephanie Beatriz added to the cast. This is the last LEGO movie to be produced by Warner Bros., as the license was dropped in 2019. Universal has picked up the rights since then, with the first Universal-era LEGO film being a Pharrell Williams documentary called Piece by Piece.Previews: Teaser, Trailer.

A Form You Are Comfortable With: Queen Watevra offers to change her form to something the Apocalypseburg citizens find more comfortable after first introducing herself to them as a horse. The multi-eyed tentacled monstrosity she changes into, however, doesn't really have the desired effect.

Trailers Always Spoil: Although not obvious as a spoiler at the time of its release, "Emmet's Holiday Special", a short that was released before the movie, shows Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and General Mayhem seemingly plotting a malicious invasion to Apocalypseburg... only to join in the festivities by adding a star to the top of the Apocalypsburgers' Christmas tree. This parallels Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and General Mayhem's roles in the actual film, coming across as evil due to their mannerisms but being well-intentioned in reality.

Darker and Edgier: Parodied. Bricksburg has become a Mad Max-like wasteland where almost everyone has a grungy, battle-tired aesthetic... except Emmet, who looks and acts almost exactly the same as in the last film, bar some new scratches on his uniform's shiny stripes. And the town's citizens deliberately chose the wasteland look in order to fend off the Duplo aliens. The reason for this of course is that Finn is now a teenager and is trying to create a more "mature" narrative with his LEGO sets based on the movies meant for older audiences he's become familiar with in the years since the first film.

Tempting Fate: A twofer: With General Mayhem at the gates of the shelter, Lucy proclaims that the gate would never, ever open. Cue Emmet opening the door to let the star out. Emmet then brushes it off saying nothing got in, only for the camera to pan over to show General Mayhem standing next to him. What else would you expect when someone says "Now there's nothing to worry about"? After getting stuck Undar the Dryar, Emmet comments that things can't be utterly hopeless. Then a (real-life) spider crawls over the minifig, to which he realizes that yes, it can.

Gone Horribly Right: Lucy tells Emmet that times have changed, that being soft and silly isn't cool anymore, and he must be "tough and battle ready." Emmet decides to do so. Lucy trying to convince Emmet that it's okay and she prefers him to be the soft, silly, gentle guy she cares about only reinforces the idea that she's been brainwashed, since Emmet can't believe that Lucy would ever willingly say such a thing. It also turned out that a gritty, tough, and hardened Emmet would turn out to be Rex Dangervest, who doesn't care about his friends or the rest of the universe.

The Cameo: A surprising one from LEGO Bruce Willis. Oddly, although the figure is based on John McClane, the other characters call him Bruce Willis. Dr. Emmett Brown, Bill & Ted, WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes and Ruth Bader Ginsburg briefly appear. A doll of Unikitty in the style of her TV series appears in Bianca's room. This is a plush toy that was made for Unikitty's creator and the film's executive producer, Matthew Ashton. Velma Dinkley appears as one of the Apocalypsburg residents. Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, and Toto appear in Harmony Town.

Poor Communication Kills: This ends up driving most of the plot. The Systarians really just wanted peace with the people of Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg, but thanks to a poor understanding of the latter's attitudes and even worse communication skills, they come across as sinister aggressors instead. In parallel, Bianca just wants to play with her older brother and be a part of his games, but the age gap between her and Finn made it difficult for her to understand how to join in, and Finn in turn didn't exactly verbalize his feelings on the situation well either.

Villain Song
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_1ccad9a3
comment
Villain Song: Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi gets two songs, both of which have all the hallmarks of this trope; "Not Evil" is about her trying to convince the Apocalypseburgers that she's Most Definitely Not a Villain and just wants to help them make all their dreams come true, while "Gotham City Guys" is about her using Reverse Psychology to convince Batman to marry her. Watevra turns out to actually not be a villain, just a really bad communicator. This makes "Not Evil" a villain song that's not a villain song, that tells you it's not a villain song... which makes it seem like a villain song..

Chekhov's Gun: The heart Emmet gave as a peace-offering to the DUPLO aliens became Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. It was also what Finn made for Bianca 5 years ago which got her interested in LEGO and started the events of the movie. The eject seat button on Rex's ship seems to be playing off the EXTREME nature of Rex Dangervest, but it later comes back as a means to launch Emmet under the dryer in order to complete his transformation into Rex himself. The heart bomb Lucy steals while inside General Mayhem's ship is later used in an attempt to destroy the Space Palace's Entertainment Center. Instead, General Mayhem deflects the bomb, triggering an explosion that blows away the general's helmet, revealing her real face to Lucy.

Ironic Echo: Lucy tries teaching Emmet to be tough and brooding by repeatedly saying, "War hardens the heart," which Emmet can't really pull off. Near the end, when Rex traps him in Undar of the Dryar, Emmet says it to himself in exactly the way Lucy wanted him to. "You started it." Used at first in a way that seems to mean "You started the fight, not us!" by the Systar inhabitants to the inhabitants of Apocalypseburg. Later revealed that since the Queen of the Systar System is the heart that Emmet gave the DUPLO aliens on the first day of the invasion (the one Finn gave his younger sister on the first day they played together), the Apocalypseburg members (and by extension Finn) started the Systar System. Rex's true backstory reveals that during the years when he, Emmet, was trapped and helpless with no hope of rescue, all the criticism and mockery that everyone in Apocalypseburg had heaped on him, echoed endlessly in his thoughts and added fuel to his anger. So he made himself into what they all said he should be, and used it to inflict retribution on all the LEGO world.

Mythology Gag: Adding to the fan's dislike for DUPLO placing DUPLO aliens as antagonists, it also turns out that the controversial girl-oriented Mini-Doll figures from the LEGO Friends series are also part of the enemy. Except they're not the enemy, just really bad at communicating. In the Imagine Spot showing the team of spaceship builders that Queen Watevra promises to Benny, their planet happens to be yellow with a ship leaving a red trail before it for a split-second, making it looks exactly like the logo seen everywhere on the vintage LEGO Spacemen. When Rex, and later Emmet, become animate in the real world, their movements (and also Rex's interactions with real-world objects) are like primitive, stop-motion animation found on LEGO videos created by fans of the feature films.

Carnivore Confusion: Some of the Systarians are living foods like the walking chocolate bar that looks at a chocolate fountain and laments how fragile life is. At one point Batman asks for ice cream to soothe his depression and Wa'Nabi's ice cream butler responds that he's not a thing to be used to fill emotional voids. Trope also taken to a hilarious extreme in the "intermission" pause.

Actor Allusion
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_392372f9
comment
Actor Allusion: Rex Dangervest is a Composite Character of Star-Lord, Owen Grady and Josh Faraday. With Emmet being similar to Andy Dwyer, Chris Pratt is essentially reprising all four of his most well-known live-action roles. Another of Rex's title cards boasts about his "chiseled features previously hidden under baby fat" (reflecting Chris Pratt going from tubby to ripped for Guardians of the Galaxy). Later on, Rex mentions that he is also a first baseman and it's shown that his username on some sort of Instagram lookalike is "rexrexrex", similar to how Chris Pratt's handle on Instagram and Twitter is "prattprattpratt". Emmet has a similar experience to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which he visits another planet, then gets betrayed by his new mentor. When Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi shows off her shapeshifting abilities, Batman says he prefers the horse. This is also most likely a reference to Haddish repeatedly referring to herself as "The Last Black Unicorn", which was the basis for a sketch she was in on SNL and the title of her first memoir. When Sweet Mayhem has her helmet on, she talks in a deeper voice, closer to the one that Stephanie Beatriz uses for Rosa Diaz. After she takes the helmet off, Beatriz uses her normal speaking voice for the rest of the film. Noel Fielding plays a Camp Straight, androgynous vampire. He's not technically credited as playing himself, but it's not that far from the truth.

Character Development: Thanks to Rex's teachings, Emmet gradually learns anger and becomes "tougher" over the course of the movie...and then subverted when Emmet's character development actually makes everything worse, because he ends up ruining everything. In order to make things right, Emmet has to develop his character in a different direction — yes, he has to realize that everything is not awesome, but he also has to "open his heart" enough to be willing to try to make things awesome, and therefore not become Rex.

No Fourth Wall: Both in and out of universe. Pretty much all the LEGO figures are aware they are in a movie. In the beginning, they mention that Batman was off doing a "standalone feature", in reference to his spinoff film. One character says that "Marvel won't return our calls" in reference to the fact that only DC characters appear, since Marvel was owned by rival studio Disney. Also, when the To Be Continued... Right Now screen comes up, Lucy interrupts saying that the film should not end on a cliffhanger. The stylised "THE END" LEGO build used for that scene even gets shattered. In the finale Rex / jaded future-Emmet also notes in-universe that a fight between them and Emmet isn't even really happening, and instead is just a metaphorical representation of the death of imagination in an adolescent boy's mind.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_3ed23024
comment
Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: A recurring theme in the movie is that even the seemingly smallest things and misunderstandings can lead to big consequences. The Systarians' poor communication skills lead to suspicion and distrust from Lucy, who sees them as the bad guys, especially after Queen Watevra sings a song claiming she is not evil, a rare subversion of Most Definitely Not a Villain. Lucy wanting Emmet to toughen up causes him to doubt her when she says she's not brainwashed. He ends up sticking with Rex, who was Evil All Along, and ends up causing Armamageddon. Building on that, there's a deconstructed in-universe example. Emmett has an Imagine Spot that once he destroyed the wedding cake, it would automatically save the day, save his friends, earn Lucy's approval and prove to everybody he's a tough worth-while person. More-or-less the opposite happens: his actions set off Armamageddon, endangers every one including a distraught Lucy, and he's left alone to realize it was a bad idea. The entire trope is reconstructed when Lucy admits to the Systarians and the Apocalypsburgers that "Everything's not Awesome", but that doesn't mean they can't make things better, especially when they have each other.

And Now You Must Marry Me: Queen Watevra's Evil Plan is to have Batman marry her. What makes this interesting is that she makes sure that Batman wants to marry her. After "Gotham City Guys," Batman proposes to her, she asks him if he is sure, and Batman is shown to be completely on board with the wedding. The whole thing was even intended to unite their two worlds in peace, so it wasn't even an Evil Plan at all!

Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Finn and Bianca's mom comments "I'm not the bad guy in this story, I'm just an amusing side character."  The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_4cefd8a6
comment
Long Song, Short Scene: Except for "Gotham City Guys" and the credits songs, every song sounds longer on the soundtrack than in the movie. Some notable trims made for the film: "Welcome to the Systar System" lost everything aside from the Title Drop. Rough animation for the full song made it into the bonus features, revealing that the stars would have sung the cut portion in response to some Lucy/Batman banter ultimately moved to "Not Evil". "5:15" and "Everything's Not Awesome" lost their endings, to flow into the dialogue. "Not Evil" lost another chorus and a bridge, the latter of which would've sounded inconsistent with later events.note Had "Not Evil" kept its bridge in the movie, "Gotham City Guys" would've likely negated the lines, "I never lie/And that wasn't a lie/When I said just now/That I never lie/'Cause I never lie". "Super Cool" actually runs shorter on the soundtrack, which edits out the Lonely Island singing about the credited names (which listeners can't see if they play the song separate from the credits).

The End. Subverted when Lucy speaks up and refuses to let it end that way, ultimately defying this trope.

Disproportionate Retribution: Rex, as past-Emmet, was abandoned under the dryer by his friends in an alternate timeline. So his response is to hatch a convoluted plan to trick his past self into causing Armamageddon, which would put the entire LEGO universe into storage despite only a few characters being responsible for his abandonment. Emmet destroying the temple is a representation of Finn in the real world responding to his sister taking his toys without asking by wrecking Bianca's Systar System, even though he could have just stolen his toys back or just asked Bianca to give them back or just explained to her why taking his stuff without asking is wrong. This is likely the point of the movie as showing why this sort of "tough" acting is wrong, especially since it causes everyone to be banished to the Bin of Storaj because Finn and Bianca's mom has had enough of their fighting.

Broad Strokes: As LEGO Batman Movie is fully in continuity with LEGO Movie 1 and 2,note while LEGO Ninjago Movie seemingly not at all best guess is that Batman's film occurs between the second or third of the DUPLO's many attacks on Bricksburg. And as his film's plot was still going on when the Justice League departed without him to find the DUPLO, then they would have left soon after Batman had turned up uninvited at their 57th anniversary party. And as the DCEU Aquaman wasn't at the party, then he must have only just become a League member either right after Batman left, or right before the League were about to board their ship.

Growing Up Sucks: The theme of this movie is exploring what it really means to mature as a person, and deconstructing howinvoked True Art Is Angsty is a narrow-minded view to hold. In its own way, going Darker and Edgier just for the sake of it is just as childish as being Lighter and Softer, if not moreso — true maturity and growth is more complicated than that.

Fake-Out Fade-Out: The movie seems to end in tragedy, with Emmet having caused Armamageddon and his hard and embittered future self Rex stranding him on Undar of the Dryar, while everyone else is trapped inside the Bin of Storaj and starts singing a depressing song of giving up. We even get a "The End" title card, so all is lost — but Lucy still manages to find a way to inspire everyone, and the movie continues from there. The same "The End" title card would later be used when the film ends for real. Some theaters aided in this fake out by turning on the lights while it happens, usually the signal that the movie is over. When it's revealed to be a fake-out, though, the lights go back down as the movie continues to play.

Central Theme
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_5ce7dbb9
comment
Central Theme: The differences between how boys and girls play, and once again how we should let others into our fun rather than giving up on our own imagination altogether. Like Lord Business for the dad in the first film, Rex represents Finn's desire to give up on his imagination altogether when Bianca wanting to make a world where they can play together gets in the way of him telling his own complex time travel story. In the finale, the parts of him represented by Wyldstyle make him realize he can enjoy building and playing with her too, and he makes peace with Bianca by recreating the heart/Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi that had inspired her interest in Legos in the first place, ending with the two playing together at last. Rex similarly fades from existence, happy that Finn won't give up on the part of his imagination that believes anything and anyone can be special that Emmet had represented for him, after all. The other major theme, related in a number of ways to the above, is what it means to grow up and become more mature. In many ways, it's shown that responding to the problems in life by becoming more cynical and rejecting positivity is effectively the easy way out, and NOT a mature way of dealing with it. Emmett's increasing "toughness" (which ultimately is what would turn him into Rex), representing Finn's attitude, ultimately makes things worse and shows he hasn't achieved actual maturity at all. The resolution shows that true maturity requires a balance of both cynicism and idealism; acknowledging the problems life has but nonetheless doing what you can to make things better.

Triumphant Reprise: "Everything's Not Awesome" begins as a Dark Reprise to the first film's "Everything Is Awesome" after Armamageddon comes around and they're thrown into the storage bin until Wyldstyle realizes that everything can be awesome, but only if we work together to make it that way. In a way, it's a Triumphant Reprise to both "Everything Is/Is-Not Awesome" as it takes the creepily optimistic theme of the first and combines it with the cynicism of the second to create something realistic yet hopeful. It also doubles (triples?) as a Triumphant Reprise to "Catchy Song", as some of the citizens of the Systar System begin singing lines from it as well. Well, just the one line, really.

Batman Can Breathe in Space: Spacesuits exist in this movie, but nobody seems to really need one. When Rex and Emmet jump out of Harmony Town into another planet, they don't even bother to put on spacesuits as they fall through empty space (Emmet does hold his breath, but it turns out he didn't need to). The Party Buses taking all the Systarians to the Queen's Wedding deploy into party-mode in the middle of travel, which is in space. Everyone is probably too busy partying to care. In the final battle, Lucy ejects herself into space without a suit in order to reach Undar.

Late-Arrival Spoiler: Wyldstyle's real name is Lucy, the LEGO world is a kid's imagination of his family's playspace, and there was an alien invasion by aliens based on the DUPLO. Starting with the April 2019 release of the Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa, every Lucy minifigure included in a LEGO Movie 2 set has blue hair, confirming that her hair color reverts from black to blue. The August 2019 wave of LEGO Movie 2 sets includes one based on the climax, with Lucy and Sweet Mayhem co-piloting their Wyld-Mayhem Star Fighter en route to save Emmet from Rex, whose evil side the box makes especially obvious by showing him shooting at Lucy; it also marks the first set to show Sweet Mayhem's real face on the front of the box. Another set in the wave takes inspiration from the final musical sequence, "Super Cool", with two Sparkle Babies playing with a star-shaped projectile, and Lucy handing Emmet a first-edition recording of "Everything is Awesome", showing her on the cover.

Vengeful Abandoned Toy: Rex Dangervest turns out to be a version of Emmet from an alternate timeline where he failed to make it through the Stairgate and got stranded in Undar of the Dryar System (under the dryer in the basement). Upset that nobody bothered to rescue him, he eventually got tired of waiting and became animate through his own anger. He cobbled together a time machine from other time machines and went back to save his past self from getting stranded, trick him into kickstarting Armamageddon, and launch him to Undar of the Dryar to maintain his existence.

The Power of Hate: As part of the alternate Emmet's turn into Rex Dangervest, he became so empowered by his rage that he was actually able to move with nearly full articulation in the real world and build himself a timeship. Emmet (the one who isn't Rex) too starts to harness anger as a power for his "breaking" skills, and even manages a decent amount of articulation in the real world when Rex comes to Undar of the Dryar to try to finish him off — not enough to be a match for Rex but impressive nonetheless.

Grey-and-Gray Morality: The central conflict turns out to be this, because Poor Communication Kills. The citizens of the Systar System spent years attacking Bricksburg and re-destroying everything they tried to rebuild, and only just now have they shown interest in peaceful co-existence, so the Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg residents have perfect reason to be suspicious. As for Rex, he went through a brutal Break the Cutie and is trying to Set Right What Once Went Wrong, and before he goes off the Moral Event Horizon he could be classified as a Well-Intentioned Extremist. In terms of the human storyline, Bianca regularly wrecked Finn's playsets as a kid, so he has good reason to have pushed her away and refuse to play with her, but now Bianca has grown up and really does want to play peacefully with Finn if he would just give her a chance.

Eventually, Emmet realizes that just because everything's not awesome all the time is no reason to give up on life. "You started it," playing into the central theme of sibling conflict. Bianca's not just trying to pass the blame onto Finn - she's admitting that the conflict started because she was trying to play with him the only way she thought he would enjoy. Parental Bonus: The aesthetic of Bricksburg (now apparently renamed "Apocalypseburg") post-invasion is an obvious reference to the look of post-apocalyptic films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Planet of the Apes (1968) that kids won't recognize. It's rather doubtful there are that many kids in the audience who will know who Ruth Bader Ginsburg is. Rex Dangervest references both The Matrix and Back to the Future by name. When a confused Emmet asks what those are, Rex replies that they're "classic movies that older kids get to watch." There are references abound to classic action movies, with Rex's raptors all being named after action heroes and Bruce Willis making a cameo that parodies Die Hard. One that doubles as a Stealth Pun: during his real backstory, one of the devices he used to make the Rexcelsior is a hot tub. A double during the fake "intermission" that abruptly interrupts during the middle of a climactic scene: Monty Python did something similar in one of their movies, and the intermission itself is a direct reference to a commonly-heard jingle played in theaters decades ago.

Bathos: Like the previous film, the fact that the characters are made of LEGO bricks is frequently referenced for the sake of comedy... even in the middle of extremely dramatic moments. After Rex reveals the truth to Emmet that he's Emmet from the future, turned evil, it's an intensely dramatic scene... until Emmet admits that he missed all of the important details because he wasn't paying attention. Emmet's intense battle with Rex/himself Undar the Dryar is depicted by their minifigures being undramatically smacked into one another.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part / int_97926168
comment
Rewatch Bonus: After you've seen the movie once, the pre-timeskip scene with the DUPLO attacking Bricksburg takes on a new meaning as it becomes clear that the DUPLO legitimately seem unaware that their behavior is destructive (or that a Batarang bouncing off a DUPLO does not mean the Batarang "missed"). This is because a then-very-young Bianca was only trying to play with her big brother Finn, so she wasn't even aware how badly a "we are here to destroy you" would come across, as she thought that's just how playing with her big brother would work. Many, if not all, of Rex's actions become this when he is revealed to be not only the true villain but also Emmet's future self. During the first cut into the real world, you can hear a heavily distorted argument between the two kids. During it, Finn mentions that he's trying to tell a "mature story about time travel and stuff". On second watch, this statement single-handedly clears up a lot of unanswered questions about how Rex's story relates to the meta-narrative.

Be Careful What You Wish For: Lucy and the residents of Apocalypseburg have grown so tired of Emmet's endless optimism and naivety that they wish for him to grow up and be tough like them. Emmet tries to follow his friends' advice, but not only does it make things worse, it turns out that Rex Dangervest is the end result of Emmet trying to be the grown-up and tough person they wanted him to be, who in turn brings forth Armamageddon. And the main reason he ended up like that was because they were having too much fun to remember he was under the dryer.

Coming of Age Story: In a way. "Growing up" is a recurring theme in the narrative, with a lot of Emmet's personal conflict having to do with still being upbeat in a world where everyone is telling him to change his tune and "get with the times". As Emmet, Wyldstyle and the rest are arguably Finn's Author Avatars, it reflects his own struggles with growing up now that he's a teenager. There's also a point to be made that the film deals with how to grow up, with Rex representing the easy, angsty, and cynical method that helps no one but yourself — "don't let anyone else play with you, even if that means breaking everything, putting all your toys into storage, and giving up on your imagination" — as opposed to the much harder route of being aware that life has letdowns and compromises with others, but rolling with the punches and persevering through it to find the fun you can have by including people other than just yourself, as detailed in the Everything's Not Awesome song.

Take That!: Classic Aquaman being left behind in Apocalypseburg while his DCEU counterpart leaves with the Justice League to stop the alien invasion is no doubt a jab to his perceived uselessness popularized by his Super Friends incarnation. Prior to Batman and Watevera Wa'Nabi's marriage, there's a line about how Batman being married would be unfaithful to his character; this might be a slight one against DC Comics, who were teasing Batman and Catwoman getting married for over a year before Selina decided that Bruce being happy would make Batman weaker. After giving the Star Wars franchise a memorable surprise appearance in the first movie, this time it's not given a cameo or offhand mention. No doubt due to Phil Lord & Chris Miller getting fired from directing Solo. All previous LEGO movies give zero direct references to Disney, though Marvel and Star Wars are exceptions. This time, Disney gets one: a parody named "Larry Poppins". In this one, due to the presence of DC characters, the characters explicitly mention that "Marvel's not returning our calls."

Corrupt the Cutie: Rare male example. Near the end of the movie, it turns out that the reason why Rex was trying to make Emmet more tough and hardened was because he was trying to turn Emmet into him. When it turns out that simply mentoring Emmet doesn't work, he puts him under the dryer in a desperate attempt to emotionally break him. In fact, Rex himself is an example — he used to be Emmet, but after being forgotten under the dryer for a really long time, he eventually decided to completely change his image from the nice and cheerful Emmet to the tough and cynical Rex.

Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Maintained from the first film, albeit now more ambiguous. The climax is triggered by Finn hearing the muffled "This song's gonna get stuck inside your head" refrain from the Everything's Not Awesome song. Whether he's actually hearing the characters singing, or it's just Bianca's music player in the storage bin, is never made clear though. Rex's backstory involves him becoming animate in the real world, changing his appearance, building his ship and time-traveling into the past to save Emmet, which includes a shot of the Rexcelsor model appearing out of thin air for Finn to find it, but in Emmet's visions of the real world, Finn mentions setting up a time-travel plotline with the toys already and seems to have prepared Rex's ship himself. Rex mentioning Rex and Emmet's fight with limited movement in the real world being nothing but a metaphor for the death of Finn's imagination, and the area becoming a brick-built part of the LEGO world when Lucy intervenes after, makes things even less clear. Like with Emmet in the last film, Lucy becomes conscious but inanimate in the real world after the temple is destroyed, but unlike the last movie, she isn’t able to signal her living nature to Bianca before she disposes of the minifigure in her bin.

Hypocrite: This is part of the villain's motivation. But it's more what he views as other people's hypocrisy rather than his own. After his friends spent so much time being chiding him for being optimistic and trying to have fun in the post-apocalyptic world when they were all being grim and gritty, Emmett was embittered by the fact that they abandoned him to the Dryar System and forgot about him because they were having too much fun in the Systar System. After spending an eternity with their jibes about him echoing in his head, he decided to give them what they'd spend so long demanding he should be, and Rex Dangervest is the result.

Rex Dangervest is a Composite Character of Star-Lord, Owen Grady and Josh Faraday.

O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Emmet realizes something's not right when he sees Superman being friendly with both Green Lantern (whom he previously couldn't stand to be around) and Lex Luthor. When Wyldstyle accidentally knocks off Sweet Mayhem’s mask and has her hanging off the edge, she drops the Darth Vader copycat act and is legitimately terrified.

Dark Reprise: "Everything's Not Awesome". It starts off as being completely opposite to the last film's "Everything Is Awesome" but ultimately is subverted thanks to Wyldstyle/Lucy finding a happy medium between the two, stating the Central Theme that even if in reality things aren't always awesome, we can still make them better, together. An ominous chanted version of "Catchy Song" is heard when Emmet, Lucy and Rex infiltrate the Systar System's cake factory.
