Digimon Adventure tri. / int_143939c1 | comment |
Trailers Always Spoil: The trailers and covers don't really try to hold back. Imperialdramon was displayed prominently on the cover for Determination while its Fighter Mode was shown in the trailer. Confession had its cover prominently display Meicrackmon before it was even named while for Loss not only are Hououmon, Mugendramon and Bakumon featured on the cover but the trailer reveals both the return of MetalSeadramon and Seraphimon. They make up for this in the show by keeping any revealed information about the plot to a minimum.

Sinister Suffocation: In "Loss", the Mysterious Man aims to enrage Meicoomon by relentlessly stalking the heroes and trying to kill them with the aid of the Dark Masters. Though his attempts are thwarted thanks to the partner Digimon regaining the ability to evolve, he eventually manages to corner Meiko and chokes her in a way that's just enough to ultimately cause Meicoomon to succumb to her hatred and transform into her Superpowered Evil Side without killing her human partner too.

Darker and Edgier | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_14beeefd | comment |
Darker and Edgier: Within the first five minutes alone, the film is already filled with an existential monologue and the 02 children being curb-stomped by Alphamon. The franchise is targeted at teens and adults now, rather than kids. Series-wise, Confession, the third movie, is considerably darker than the first two. There's almost no humor, the implications of the Determination movie ending drive the entire plot, and the ending is possibly one of the most bittersweet conclusions of the entire franchise. Even the soundtrack is way bleaker and more emotional, and the opening of the first chapter doesn't even have "Butter-fly" playing. It does play towards the end as the Chosens reopen the gate to the Digital World, though.

Digimon Adventure tri. / int_178ca149 | comment |
The Worf Effect: Daisuke, Miyako, Iori and Ken. The four kids who rediscovered and used Armor Evolution and Jogress Evolution? Waylaid and easily taken out at the hands of Alphamon in the first five minutes. Justified, considering Alphamon's status as an Olympus Mon and the fact that 02 Children were without two Jogress Digimon without Takeru and Hikari's presence. Hououmon, Seraphimon, Heraklekabuterimon, Rosemon and Vikemon are all on the receiving end of this. In their initial appearances they all showed great power. Come Coexistence, they only serve to distract Jesmon and Raguelmon from their fight before being taken out when Alphamon attacks Jesmon. Justified given the huge power levels of Omegamon, Alphamon, Jesmon and Raguelmon.

Adaptational Villainy
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_20f689e9 | comment |
Adaptational Villainy: More adaptational antagonism: Alphamon. In the base lore of Digimon, the Digital Pets and TCG, Alphamon and Omegamon (Omnimon for the dub-watchers) are brothers in arms (Name theme included), with the latter even being former's most trusted ally; Omegamon is even the keeper of Alphamon's Data whenever he is not available, effectively making him second-in-command. Taichi and Yamato's Omegamon, however, has no relation with this Alphamon, and they share no brotherhood whatsoever. In addition, most iterations of Alphamon have him as a stalwart opposer to Yggdrasil, usually being the Only Sane Man amidst the Royal Knights when Yggdrasil goes too far. Here, Alphamon is one of Yggdrasil's agents, and assumedly supports its plans.

Brutal Honesty | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_23ff95fb | comment |
In a way, both Mimi and Joe end up inadvertently evoking their Crest traits up to detrimental point in Determination, though thankfully they manage to break out of this by the end of the arc.note In particular, Jou's trait (Reliability) translates to being very responsible, but now he's at the age where trying to be a responsible adult (studying and achieving high marks in school so that he may work to become a doctor) clashes with his desire to be a reliable ally and helping his friends in a new crisis at the cost of studying. This ends up bringing him intense inner turmoil over what he feels he should be doing for himself and causes some friction between him and his friends. Meanwhile, Mimi's time in America led her to becoming an even more outspoken person compared to those around her when she returned to Japan. Her trait of Sincerity/Purity is shown off when she states that she prefers Brutal Honesty and saying what you want to say over keeping your feelings hidden for the sake of others (believing that doing otherwise is selfish). However, this attitude ended up making Mimi herself come off as more self-centered than she intended, causing her to question her own behavior since she always believed she has everyone's best interests in mind whenever she takes initiative like she has been.

Mythology Gag | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_26ac510e | comment |
Mythology Gag A book on Taichi's desk is titled One Vision, which was the original Japanese Matrix Evolution (Biomerge) theme from Digimon Tamers. Taichi and Hikari's mom calls Agumon "Agu-chan," just like Masaru's mom did in Digimon Data Squad. She also calls Tailmon "Tail-chan." A Government Oversight Group whose whole purpose is to monitor and control Digimon emergencies, who recruit the Chosen Children to help clean up the problems they can't on their own... No, we've not heard of one of those in a Digimon series before. The evolution sequence bears a lot of resemblance to the one used in Digimon Tamers. Yamato's band names, "Knife of Day" and "World on the Knife," may be references to his original Image Song, Walk on the Edge. One repeated lyric is "I'll even walk on the edge of a knife." (Translation.) As is tradition in the Digimon anime at this point Leomon dies horribly A possibly unintentional one, but Imperialdramon once again continues his losing streak whenever faced with another Mega level opponent. Much like Digimon Frontier when faced with a massively powerful, evil angel digimon bent on destroying the world, the hero and lancer's digimon not only fuse, but also absorb the power of the other children's digimon to attain a much more powerful form.

Elephant in the Living Room: It's amazing how the 02 kids manage to be so important and yet so unimportant at the same time. After some Wham Shots of the 02 kids being laid low by Alphamon, the films and cast proceed to blatantly ignore them for most of the series without ever establishing why they were being ignored. Even the appearance of the apparent Digimon Kaiser and finally discovering the 02 kids (out of sheer dumb luck) fails to yield the reason they were being ignored—for all intents and purposes the main cast was completely ignorant of their situation.

Digimon Adventure tri. / int_3300f2be | comment |
Extra-Strength Masquerade: Somehow, despite the Digidestined saving the world three times now in full view of the world, and a worldwide Digimon invasion happened, people still seem surprised by Digimon. It is deconstructed because, as a realistic result of this trope, the muggles are not cheering for the Digimon who have already saved their world several times. Instead, they don't know who's the good guy and who's the bad guy. The last fifth of Confession (or the start of episode 13 on Crunchyroll) implies that, once all the damage done from the various Digimon battles are repaired or replaced, no one will talk about the Digital World any more. It should be pointed out that the closure of the Digital World about a year before Reunion separated the good Digimon from their partners, therefore preventing the muggles from learning more about the behavior of Digimon and the Digital World as a whole.

Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_372bc105 | comment |
Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: A main theme in tri. Each movie focuses on two characters: one will be The Idealist, who sees the world as it should be; and the other will be The Cynic, who sees the world as it is. In Reunion, Taichi of all people is The Cynic, reluctant to fight because he starts to grow and see the consequences of his actions, while Yamato is the one resolved to fight fearlessly. This match-up doesn't make sense until you remember Taichi becomes a diplomat in 02's future epilogue, a very people-oriented job. Thus, he is able to put himself in other's shoes when Yamato can't. However, Yamato knows fully well the damage and deaths will rise if they don't make a stand causing a major dichotomy between the two. In Determination, needless to say The Cynic is Joe, who just wants to live the life everyone expects of him but still has the pressure to fight the Digimon, and The Idealist is Mimi, whose outgoing personality can be seen as selfish and unintentionally hurtful to other people. In Confessions, Koshiro is The Cynic, who shuts himself off from the rest of the world and ignores Meiko's feeling so he can ultimately get to the cause of the Digimon infections. Takeru is The Idealist, who, despite Patamon showing the most signs of being infected, holds on to the belief that he can save his partner and not need to pay the ultimate cost. In Loss, Yokomon/Biyomon is The Cynic, refusing to listen to Sora (or any of the other Chosens) as they try to help her remember who she was and why Sora is so important to her. Sora is The Idealist, adamant in her motherly affections towards her partner and eventually unlocking her Ultimate form of Hououmon at the end when she sees Biyomon willing to fight again. In Coexistence, the eight original Chosen Children are all The Idealist, since they believe Meiko's bond with Meicoomon will trump her destructive tendencies and are determined to protect her at all costs, even going as far as ignoring a direct order from Homeostasis. Meiko is The Cynic, spending a good part of the movie blaming herself for the current situation, questioning her worth as a Chosen Child. In the end, she asks the other Chosen Children to kill Meicoomon.

Mysterious Stranger: Meiko's first appearance in the previews has her wearing Scary Shiny Glasses under a bridge holding her Digimon partner between her arms, which seems to be some kind of cat Digimon apparently called Meicoomonnote Based on a Maine Coon. The first film shows she's a transfer student who keeps appearing around the Digidestined. Her father is also a member of the same squad Himekawa and Nishijima work for. The first film introduces a woman named Maki Himekawa, described as a "mysterious woman who appears in front of the Chosen Children". She's part of what is effectively a version of Hypnos or D.A.T.S.

Plot-Based Photograph Obfuscation: The opening moments show a humongous glare on the photograph taken at the end of Digimon Adventure in Tai's room, although considering that most people familiar with the older series would know what it is, this is probably less for mysterious effect and more to make the drastic difference in art style less jarring. Sora and Joe have the same photo in their rooms, equally obscured. Turns out to be a case of some really subtle foreshadowing. The only character not to be obscured/fully bathed in light in the photo? Gennai. Whose visage was stolen by the Mysterious Man as he acts as The Dragon to Yggdrasil.

Koushiro/Izzy has an all-out crush on Mimi now, teased throughout the series. This especially shows with his blushing reaction to their reunion, and coming to the school festival just to see Mimi in her cafe outfit. He goes so far as to ask Takeru for fashion advice to impress her, though he unconvincingly denies that being the reason. Even Daigo and Maki notice and support this. By Loss, it seems to be reciprocated. As they all enjoy a meal with their partners, Mimi sits down next to Izzy and tries to directly feed him Sora's cooking, which she has added jelly beans to, since she knows he loves them. His face turns completely red at the gesture, And Takeru in the background is dumbfounded at the gesture.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_3ed23024 | comment |
Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Going Darker and Edgier means that some things that were taken for granted earlier in the Adventure are deconstructed in some form in tri: In most other Digimon seasons, a fight between two giant monsters would result in some property damage but hardly anyone noticing. Not here. After the fight with Kuwagamon, the terminal and runway at Haneda airport, along with Palette Town and the Kaiheinkoen of Odaiba, are completely leveled, and one side character remarks they know someone who was hospitalized in the attacks. The news treats the Chosen Children's partners like they're the bad guys, and Yamato nearly attacks two boys who say they just want all the Digimon to die. Then Taichi starts to worry that he might wind up killing someone. Character Development aside, the Chosen Children are no longer the same people they were years ago. For starters, Taichi no longer has the same Hot-Blooded, adventure-loving attitude he had in the first series. While most of the Digidestined were able to easily bond with their digimon partners again, Sora and Maki have trouble reconnecting with someone who doesn't remember them at all. The latter's case particularly: If you're just minding your own business when a clearly unhinged person you don't recognise appears and acts like you're lifelong friends, before picking you up and saying stuff like "we'll never be apart again"... most people are going to be creeped out.

Bittersweet Ending: The end of Confession has all the Digimon caught in the rift moments before a Reboot occurs, resetting the Digital World and all of the Digimons' memories. Then the children manage to enter the digital world and meet their amnesiac partners. The end of Our Future: Gatomon is freed from Ordinemon, the backed-up memories of all Digimon affected by the reboot are restored, Ordinemon's destruction closes all distortions and ends the infection, Homeostasis has initiated a reboot of Yggdrasil, the 02 cast are found and are receiving treatment, Koushiro/Izzy is working on a way to move between worlds without the distortions or D-3 Digivices, and the partners of the Adventure cast get to stay in the Real World. However, Daigo is dead, Maki is either dead or lost in the Dark Ocean (and her reasons for forcing the reboot were All for Nothing), Meicoomon had to be killed and can never reincarnate due to dying on Earth, Hikari/Kari sees Taichi as a Broken Pedestal over his decision to Mercy Kill Meicoomon (and probably won't forgive him for it), Meiko moves away in the wake of Meicoomon's death, public opinion on Digimon is just as divided as ever, the partners of hundreds if not thousands of Chosen Children are unaccounted still for following the reboot, including those of the 02 cast, and Alphamon and the Mysterious Man are still loose, with the latter now in possession of Apocalymon's data and is looking to obtain more from the likes of Diablomon and Demon.

Clueless Mystery | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_4cf9fe88 | comment |
Clueless Mystery: Tri is awfully, awfully coy with the audience, dangling disastrously important threads of information and then seemingly abandoning them. The biggest example is the 02 Chosen, who were conspicuously absent from affairs after being shown getting defeated at the start of Reunion, but for some reason no one saw fit to talk about them, including the Chosen. The only information known for sure about them until Our Future is that they were MIA — literally everything else was unexplained and open for interpretation, down to Alphamon's role in whatever disaster had befallen them. In Our Future, it was revealed that they had been taken out on Yggdrasil's orders, and Himekawa had ordered Daigo to cover up their disappearance, and the other Chosen has no idea. For the first half of Tri, the villains/antagonists refused to talk at all. We don't have any clear idea of what they're up to until the fourth movie.

Digimon Adventure tri. / int_4e7f703c | comment |
Wham Shot: During the opening, the film periodically cuts away to shots of the four 02 kids being thrashed by Alphamon, their partners nowhere to be found. Hackmon is seen in the shopping center where Alphamon emerges from the Digital World. Considering one of his Digivolutions was the last revealed member of the Royal Knights, his appearance in the same place as Alphamon could not be a coincidence. The sudden appearance of the Digimon Kaiser, and taken a step further when he's laid waste to the Primary Village and killed all of the Digieggs there while a horrified Elecmon looks on. And then Leomon shows up to protect them, but is injured by an Ogremon in the process. At the end of the second movie, when everyone is shocked due to Leomon's death and Meicoomon's sudden Face–Heel Turn, blink and you miss it, there is a shot where Maki Himekawa smirks. Confession shows the Digimon becoming infected with Patamon being the first to show signs of it, Meicoomon's Perfect level, Ken's D-3 and D-Terminal, and the Chosen Children (except Meiko) going to the digital world. The biggest one is at the end where "Ken" is revealed to be a Mysterious Man masquerading as Gennai, and working with Maki - who meets him in the Digital World.. The first trailer for Loss has an appearance by MetalSeadramon, who looks absolutely monstrous when compared with his look from Adventure. The first six minutes of Loss feature the original children mentioned once in Adventure fighting the Dark Masters, including four of their partners becoming the four Sovereigns introduced in 02. We also learn that both Daigo and Maki were two of those children. A lot of the posters have gone for this by highlighting the big fight of the chapter. The first poster proudly displayed Omegamon vs Alphamon. The second poster pitched Vikemon and Rosemon against Imperialdramon. The poster for the fifth movie called Coexistence shows Meicoomon's ultimate/mega form, Meiko, Hikari, and Ophanimon Falldown Mode, something bad is going to happen to Hikari and Tailmon. Meanwhile, the official tie-in cards for the movies reveals that Tailmon's actual ultimate/mega form is Holydramon. Of course, this still raises the question of just what exactly caused the corrupted Digivolution. In one of the trailers for Coexistence, the beginning shows something happening to Hikari. And it does not look good. In the trailers of Our Future, Devimon can been seen emerging out of a digital portal, Daigo can be seen lying wounded and bleeding after being hit in the gut, Taichi is still alive, and Omegamon gets a new Super Mode.

Book Ends: The trailer indicates this will happen. The original Digimon Adventure movie started with Taichi in a field narrating about the events that were about to take place and then ended with him hugging Greymon while saying "That's why I'm here." The field returns, though it's an older Taichi and Agumon this time and it once again ends with the two about to hug as Taichi says "That's why I'm here." Kouji Wada's last new recording was for the new version of "Butter-fly", which not only was his first major recording, but the first opening theme for the Digimon anime as a whole.note The new version of "Seven" recycles the lead vocal track from a previous version, likely because Wada was too sick to record again. "Butter-fly" doubles down with this trope in tri., as it will also be used as the ending credits theme to Our Future, albeit as an alternate version which adds the main voice cast plus Ai Maeda and Ayumi Miyazaki alongside Wada's vocal track.

The dub of 02 said that the older kids, in their green school uniforms, were in high school instead of the Japanese version's middle school, due in part to differences between Japanese and American school grade systems and in part to the dub adding an extra year to the Time Skip between Adventure and 02. Tri shows the older kids actually in high school and wearing light blue uniforms that are very clearly not the same as the green ones while the younger kids in middle school are wearing the green ones.

Plot Hole: The main cast's lack of interest in the absent 02 kids and their Digimon. The explanation that the 02 kids and the main cast had "drifted" doesn't account for why they go ignored when the Digimon return, the Digital world is revealed to be in crisis, or when hostile Digimon arrive in the real world, which are all big changes in the status quo that would be relevant to the whole team. Dying as Yourself: Invoked. While not really dying per se, being Rebooted will eliminate any trace of the Digimon's old memories, effectively killing the 'old' Digimon and create a new one in its place. During the battle with Meicoomon, every Digimon except HerculesKabuterimon is corrupted by the infection. HerculesKabuterimon then shouts to them that they cannot part with their human partners in these demonic forms. The shout is strong enough that all Digimons manage to overcome the infection for a moment. They share one last hug with each other while HerculesKabuterimon pushes all of them (including Meicoomon, who is trapped between them all) into the distortion portal as the Reboot countdown ends.

Godzilla Threshold: Confession reveals that a reboot of the Digital World is this. Maki states that in case the Digital World is too damaged, a reboot can be done to fix it but she also states that causing a reboot might just sink the Digital World. Homeostasis is only considering this as the virus caused by Meicoomon is not only going to destroy the Digital Worlds but all parallel worlds created by the digital network, which would destroy all technology on the human world. Worse, Loss reveals this was the villains' goal, by spreading the virus and causing as much destruction to the Digital World in order to force Homeostasis to reboot the Digital World so all digimon would come back to life. Our Future extends this to Homeostasis wanting to reboot the real world, in order to save it Ordinemon.

Cosmic Retcon: At the end of part 3, the Digital World gets rebooted to the way it was when it was created in order to combat the infection, which includes resetting the partner Digimon to their first stage and wiping their memories. Or that's what we're told it did, but Alphamon and Jesmon are already in their Mega stages only a week later, which the kids point out doesn't make sense. In Part 4, we see that Meicoomon also stayed in Adult/Champion form. Part 6 finally explains that Meicoomon held all the backup data Koushiro/Izzy created for the Digital World, which allowed her to retain her form. By releasing this data from her, all Digimon regain their memories from before the Reboot. Homeostasis' plan to get rid of Ordinemon and thwart Yggdrasil's plan in Our Future is to try and reboot the human world. Fortunately, the kids manage to persuade Hackmon to help them, and it doesn't happen.

Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Maki Himekawa, who is revealed to be one of the five original Digidestined along with Daigo and three others who had saved the Digital World from a great evil a long time ago, but it came with a great price: Maki has to let her Digimon partner be sacrificed so other Digimon partners could became the Harmonious Ones and sealed the Dark Masters away. She didn't even have a choice in the matter as her body was taken over by Homeostasis as Megadramon was being sacrificed. This ended up causing Maki much grief, not unlike how T.K. grieved for Patamon's supposed death. Worse, unlike Patamon, who could come back as a Digi-egg, Maki's partner is Killed Off for Real. From that point, Maki worked tirelessly to research ways to bring her partner back, and even Daigo's attempts to comfort her didn't help much. This allows the Mysterious Man to manipulate her into orchestrating the reboot of the Digital World as it's the only way to bring her partner back, risking numerous lives and threatening the safety of both worlds. What he didn't mention to her is that her Digimon would not have any memory of her left. From the last we've seen of her, she did not take this well at all. Hikari turns into one in Coexistence, when Taichi apparently is killed, she abruptly becomes corrupted herself, force digivolving Nyaromon into Ophanimon Falldown Mode.

T.K.'s decision of keeping the fact that Patamon is infected from the team. If he had told Izzy about it sooner, Izzy might be able to figure out a solution to fix the problem. One could say that the Digimons themselves are partly at fault, too, as they leave the safety of Izzy's private system and out into the real world because they wanted to be with their partners, eventually leading to all of them getting corrupted by the infection and had to be rebooted, losing their memories in the process.

What Happened to the Mouse?: The 02 kids are seen falling in battle to Alphamon in the opening minutes of Reunion, and no mention of this is made again until midway through Our Future. The team fights an infected Imperialdramon in Determination, but Hawkmon and Armadillomon are nowhere to be found. No explanation is even given if it's the same Imperialdramon the cast should know, as they completely ignore its familiar appearance. And while Our Future does explain what happened to the 02 kids, their partners are never even mentioned. Loss deals with the results of the Reboot of the Digital World. We see two of the Dark Masters revived, but nothing of the other two. We also have no idea how the Reboot affected the other partner Digimon of Daigo's team, also known as the Harmonious Ones. At the end of Confession, the gang run into a fight between Alphamon and Jesmon. During Loss, Hackmon appears to Daigo, with no sign of Alphamon, and the fight itself goes completely unmentioned thereafter (Alphamon not even reappearing until the end of Coexistence). A plot point of Coexistence is Digimon rampaging across the real world thanks to Meicrackmon. No mention is made of all those other Chosen Children from 02, or whether they're trying to stop them. Alphamon disappears from the plot completely once Ordinemon arrives. Maki was last seen being drawn into the Dark Ocean in Coexistence. Aside from a passing mention by Daigo, she makes no appearance in Our Future, leaving her fate unknown. Jesmon vanishes into the Digital Gate after freeing Gatomon from Ordinemon, assumedly due to thinking he had stopped Ordinemon and his job was done. However, after Yggdrasil uses its own power to stabilize Ordinemon, he doesn't come back, nor is he mentioned after it is said Homeostasis shut Yggdrasil down, leaving his fate unknown.

Protagonist-Centered Morality
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_89434320 | comment |
Protagonist-Centered Morality: A passive variant. Rather than doing bad and getting away with it, the Chosen passively learn of the objective horrors of what's going on — the worlds burning, unborn digimon being slaughtered, old friends seemingly going completely mad — and then blithely ignore them. The kids only confront a problem once it falls into their lap, and even then mostly to make themselves feel better — when Mimi confronts a rabid Ogremon, it's not to stop him from hurting anyone in his madness, but because it'll counter the depressing anti-digimon coverage in the news. Special mentions to their treatment towards Meicoomon. They completely ignore that leaving Meicoomon alive will cause the world to burn and even go as far as turning against Homeostasis over it. Even when Meiko herself suggests that Meicoomon should probably be slain, they shoot her down anyways and insist to bring Meicoomon back happy and alive, despite Meiko is Meicoomon's partner so she deserves more respect than being blithely shot down and they have no solution to the infection anyways, meaning that the world will burn over some teens who don't want to shoot down an apocalyptic abomination that's also a Digimon partner and said teens didn't care.

Denser and Wackier: Zigzagged. There were plenty of hijinks in the earlier installments, but tri. represents a tonal shift in the Digimon Adventure continuity that has less to do with the kind of serious content that a kid can't sit through and more of the kind of adult humor that no one wants children to repeat.

Deconstruction | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_8ae880f7 | comment |
Deconstruction: Several points that were taken for granted in Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 are played more realistically: The Paper Thin Disguises that were shown to work almost flawlessly in Adventure prompt a waitress to note that they have some "very unusual-looking friends". The Hero Insurance that the kids had in the earlier series is discarded, and the collateral damage incurred by fighting the Digimon makes Taichi seriously reconsider whether it's a good thing to be a Destructive Saviour (02 had only barely touched on this when a director complained that they'd just rebuilt the Fuji TV station, but it hadn't been brought up otherwise). Back in the old movies if Joe missed out the action, it was treated as a big joke. Here, we see the repercussions of his constant absence and how he's emotionally distressed about it and feels conflicted over whether to help his friends or keep studying. Many of the partner Digimon start to become infected, and Patamon goes so far as to ask to be killed if he turns and attacks the others. Part 4 really explores just what the bond between Digimon and human means: Maki worked tirelessly for years to reboot the Digital World to get back her partner, Tapirmon, but when Tapirmon doesn't recognize her because of said reboot she very clearly snaps, and her reaction freaks Tapirmon out something fierce. It really makes you wonder what would have happened to T.K. had Patamon not come back after beating Devimon. The series as a whole deconstructs the children's crests with: Yamato's crest is friendship, which is shown by his loyalty to the Digimon, but because of this, he refuses to acknowledge any criticism of the partner Digimon, even if it's a legitimate fear, which causes arguments with Taichi. Joe's crest is reliability, which is shown that he's torn between studying to make his parents proud and fighting alongside his friends. Joe is stuck between both responsibilities, which makes him hate himself. Mimi's crest is purity, which is shown by her being true to herself. However, her tendency of not listening to others caused others, even Koushiro, to think she's just being selfish instead. Takeru's crest is hope, which is shown by his belief that things will work themselves out. However, when Patamon is infected, he desperately clings to the hope that Patamon can be cured as he waits. Koushiro's crest is knowledge, which is shown by his workaholic tendencies. But due to these tendencies he works himself to exhaustion. As a result, he fails to notice that the Digimon are infected until it's nearly too late. Koushiro's character development in Adventure entailed him learning to pay attention to what's going on away from his computer and using his knowledge to help his friends, so the events of Tri. represent a serious backslide for him. Sora's crest is love, which is shown by her Team Mom traits. On the other hand, as Taichi states, her tendency to take care of others while ignoring her own needs means that no one is able to help her when she's troubled. Hikari's crest is light, which is shown by her Mysterious Waif tendencies and her ability to empower Digimon, as well as being possessed by Big Good Homeostastis. Due to Taichi's apparent death, Hikari is corrupted by grief, which empowers Tailmon negatively and makes it dark evolves to Ofanimon: Falldown Mode. Taichi's crest is courage, which is what defines Taichi as a leader and is thoroughly deconstructed throughout the series after his impulsive actions in the first film. In Our Future, Taichi has to accept that in order to be an effective leader, he must also be willing to make decisions that he'll be hated for and have the courage to go through with mercy killing Meicoomon when it becomes apparent that they can not save her.

Audience Shift: This is the one of the few Digimon animations to be targeted at adults, following the video games and X-Evolution in having more mature plotlines, as well as the franchise as a whole shifting towards the adult market. Since the anime films are geared towards an audience that grew up watching Digimon Adventure, and many of the said fans happen to be adults, this is deliberately invoked.

Your Size May Vary: Take a look at this scale image and see if it follows the scale of Digimon sizes laid out in Adventure. Some of the more ridiculous examples: Garudamon, the tallest of the Ultimate level Digimon is here depicted as being shorter than Greymon. MetalGreymon, who in the series is about 2-2.5 times bigger than Greymon, is only about a head taller. Togemon, who is the third shortest Champion (only Angemon and Tailmon are smaller) is now taller than Kabuterimon, the tallest.

Ken makes his return as the Digimon Kaiser in Determination, despite apparently getting destroyed in the intro of Reunion. The third part reveals it was actually Gennai disguised as Ken, but the trope still applies for Gennai himself. Only to be zigzagged later on with the Mysterious Man not being Gennai, and both the real Gennai and Ken being found by Taichi and Daigo later on. Foreshadowing: The new animations for digivolving showed the evolved forms initially being black with 0's, 1's and 2's dotting their bodies, despite data traditionally being binary. Confessions reveals that the corruption is the digital make-up being changed from binary to a new system, with 2 being the symbol that overwrites the traditional binary. After Daigo reveals who he is, it's mentioned that while his department worked with Gennai, they haven't heard from him in a while. At the end of Reunion, Meiko and Meicoomon both say "dandan", a local dialect for saying "thanks". This becomes important in Our Future, as it was the password to unlocking the file storing all the Digimons' memories. In Confession, despite the digital world being rebooted, two of the first Digimon the kids meet are Alphamon and Jesmon, two Ultimate-levels fighting each other. How that is possible has not yet been revealed. It's also worth noting that Jesmon is the Mega form Hackmon (who previously appeared in Determination) is primarily associated with. The mysterious opening to Reunion shows Miyako's glasses shattered on the ground, and the end of Loss shows Meiko's glasses shattering after being throttled by Dark Gennai, a servant of Yggdrasil. In Our Future Daigo confirms this connection by confessing to Taichi that the 02 quartet got a lead on Yggdrasil's plans and were defeated in their rogue operation to stop it prior to Reunion.

Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: The subtitle to each film in Japanese ("Saikai" for the first, etc.) is a single word written in two kanji. Zig-zagged by the last film's subtitle, "Bokura no Mirai", where "bokura no" is spelled with four hiragana and "mirai" is spelled with two kanji. The English dub approximates this by making each subtitle one word each, shortening Our Future to just Future to fit the pattern, although the UK release still uses the two-word subtitle.

The issue is only willingly looked into for a few perfunctory minutes at the start of the third movie, which ends following an obvious snow-job by Maki.

At the end of Confession, the Digidestined manage to open a portal to the Digital World using their Digivices, along with their Crest powers. During the climax of Coexistence, Omnimon suddenly develops the ability to create dimensional portals just when the teens need it. In Our Future, after Angewomon digivolves to her final form, Meiko's digivice glows, allowing Omegamon to fuse with the other six partners to enter Merciful Mode.

However, even though HerculesKabuterimon is able to hold the Digimon enough to push them back into the distortion, none of them got to the backup port in time. Subverted, when it's revealed in Our Future that during the confrontation Meicoomon's data was mixed in and as a result she got all of the Digimons' memories from before the reboot. During Coexistence, during a fight between Meicoomon and everyone else, there's a moment where she leaps in front of Meiko, giving the possibility there is some of her still in there somewhere. However, the fight progresses, and the kids don't get another chance to reach out to her.

Maki Himekawa, who is revealed to be one of the five original Digidestined along with Daigo and three others who had saved the Digital World from a great evil a long time ago, but it came with a great price: Maki has to let her Digimon partner be sacrificed so other Digimon partners could became the Harmonious Ones and sealed the Dark Masters away.

Just Plane Wrong: At the beginning of Confession a Boeing 747 has to do an emergency landing because the Autopilot for landing can't be switched on and the systems malfunction. First of all, pilots only use the Autopilot for landing if the weather conditions are too bad (thick fog is a reason). And second, an experienced pilot flying a commercial airliner should be capable to land a plane without using the electronic systems. Thats what he was trained for. Especially the last point can't be handwaved by artistic license, because the pilot already has a clear view of the landing strip when he panics. Maybe the Rule of Cool demands him to do an overdramatic emergency landing.

Adaptation Name Change: "DigiDestined" was a term created by the English dub to describe the children chosen by the Digital World. Up until then, fans of the original version often referred to them by the literal translation of the original Japanese term, "Chosen Children." However, the official subtitles for tri., as well as a screenshot in the first movie, have adapted "DigiDestined" as an in-character term used outside of Japan.note The character song album for the humans uses "Erabareshi kodomatachi" ("Chosen Children") in romaji, and the Japanese characters still refer to each other in that manner.

Ship Tease | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_dcb9c541 | comment |
Ship Tease: The movies are pretty heavy when it comes to teasing certain ships, including: Teasing of both Sora/Taichi and Sora/Yamato, even simultaneously. In Reunion, Sora tries to go both to Taichi's soccer game and Yamato's concert, and blushes when Mimi points out that both are rather attractive now. In Loss, both Taichi and Yamato notice that Sora is depressed and try to cheer her up. Later they both arrive to protect her from Machinedramon's attack. Takeru/Hikari is teased on multiple occasions, along with them often checking up on each other in general: Takeru asks Hikari if she's jealous of his new female friend (which she denies). Takeru (in nothing but a towel) rushes to hold her still when she nearly slips at the hot springs which leads her to blush and look away. Hikari once notes how grown up Takeru has become; though it's not clear if she said loud enough for him to hear (or out loud at all), both of them blush for a second afterward. A new ship, Taichi/Meiko, is teased occasionally, mostly during the second half of the story. In Coexistence, Taichi and Meiko have a brief conversation concerning the events of Loss. The two get off to a pretty good start, with Taichi expressing a liking for her use of Tottori dialect and Meiko complimenting him as a good person, but he is very offended when she suggests that things would be better if she hadn't been born. Even though he apologizes for yelling at her, the two are disheartened by the thought that they made the other upset until Agumon talks with each of them individually. By the end of Our Future, Taichi talks with Meiko over the phone, apparently at the insistence of his friends; he has a lot of trouble speaking to her, even blushing when she asks how he's been, as opposed to how talkative he was during the above conversation. Conversely, she seems much more at ease while talking to him, even referring to him as "Yagami-kun", as opposed to the more formal "Taichi-san" that she had used before.

Call-Forward | |
Digimon Adventure tri. / int_e3c36782 | comment |
Call-Forward: The characters make several allusions to their careers in the epilogue of 02, showing that they are starting to become the adults they are going to be. Hints are shown of Tai's future career as an ambassador to the Digital World which was shown in the 02 epilogue. Tai struggles with an assignment that basically asks "what do you want to be when you grow up." When brainstorming with his teacher he says he wants to see an old friend who lives far away in a place hard to get to (such as the Digital World), thinking of Agumon, and gets the suggestion he should study foreign languages if he wants to travel. Tai starts to show signs of greater empathy. In Reunion he stops Matt from getting into a fight with some guys from making derogatory remarks about the Digimon. In Determination he stops Matt again, this time from badmouthing Joe for not showing up to a fight. He's the only one in Confession who's able to guess that the Digimon are keeping something (the reboot) secret from them. In Loss he tries to console Sora Biyomon losing her memories. He does a bad job of it, not entirely understanding why she's upset, but he still provides some astute insights into Sora's character. In other words, while he isn't perfect yet, he's showing an increased ability to read people and express sympathy for them, something that would come in useful as an ambassador (contrast this with a moment in Adventure when he tells Mimi to "get over it" as she's grieving for some recently fallen allies). Matt's band seems not long-lasting. In Reunion, Matt's old band broke up due to musical difference and he renamed his band from Teen-Age Wolves to Knife of Day. In Determination, a band was created just for the school's culture festival named World on the Knife. At the end of Our Future, Matt considers Daigo's final advice, and decides to aim for space. Sora helps Meiko with her outfit in the second movie, hinting at her later career as a fashion designer in the 02 epilogue. Izzy has always been a researcher and more concerned with the technical aspects of the digital world, so it's no surprise he continues on that trajectory. Mimi's generally associated with food in this series. She runs a cafe for school's culture festival, and also develops fondness for rather unique food combination, such as putting whipped cream and jelly beans on top of Sora's savory cooking, a trait she seems to imitate from her mother who was shown to put whipped cream and strawberries as a topping for kimchi fried rice in Adventure. In the epilogue to 02, she's a chef with her own cooking show. Joe is cramming to get into med school. Like Izzy, this carries over from Adventure and 02 on a trajectory towards becoming a Digimon doctor. T.K.'s blog can be seen as an earlier phase of his career as a novelist.

Even by the time they know who their enemy is, they make no great effort to stop them, instead preferring to sit around and angst. Half the problems they face either escape or are solved by someone else's intervention, rather than any direct action of the team's part.

Ignored Vital News Reports: During Reunion, Hikari overhears an important news report, but by the time she brings it to Taichi's attention, the news is over, and has gone to an advert.

Senior Year Struggles: Joe Kido is in his senior year. He's very stressed about his university entrance exams as he wants to be a doctor, which causes him to prioritize his studies over helping his friends with saving the world, at least at first.

Sora's crest is love, which is shown by her Team Mom traits. On the other hand, as Taichi states, her tendency to take care of others while ignoring her own needs means that no one is able to help her when she's troubled.

Canon Immigrant: Gomamon's later Mega/Ultimate Evolutions, Vikemon, made his first appearance in animated form after he appeared in the Digimon Adventure RPG. Seraphimon and Holydramon/Magnadramon appear in Loss and Our Future respectively after they made their first appearance in the second 02 movie, Hurricane Touchdown!/The Golden Digimentals, though some fans reject it for being a Non-Serial Movie. Yggdrasil finally makes its debut in the Adventure series after appearing in later properties. The novelization of Adventure implied that the original Chosen Children briefly mentioned were partners to the Digimon who later became the Four Digimon Sovereigns, which part 4 seemingly confirms.

Digimon Adventure tri. / int_fdc4fab4 | comment |
Depending on the Writer: More like "Depending on the Marketing Department": Digimon Adventure tri. integrates a lot of terminology introduced from the original English dub of Digimon Adventure, such as "DigiDestined" as the official English term to refer to the main characters. Originally, they also used their own English translations for their crests on Bandai's products (such as "Honesty" instead of "Reliability", "Purity" instead of "Sincerity"), but their collaboration with Japanese eyewear brand Glasses Ichiba lists the crest names in English by names from the English dub.
