Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur is a 2020 anime film, the 40th in the Doraemon Film Series and a loose remake of Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur.Much like the original film, Nobita made another promise after being made fun of by Suneo and Gian during a dinosaur exhibition, that he will come up with a real-life dinosaur to impress them or else he will eat peanuts through his eyes. As luck would have it, Nobita did manage to locate a fossilized dinosaur egg, and with help from Doraemon's Time Cloth, reverts it to it's original state. This time however, Nobita is the owner of two baby dinosaurs, a pair of twins hatched from the same egg belonging to an unknown feathered species that not even Doraemon's Complete Encyclopedia of Space have records of. Realizing he have discovered an entirely new dinosaur species, Nobita names them Kyu and Myu, intending to raise them into adulthood before showing them to his friends, but just like before, problems of raising a living dinosaur in modern-day Japan arises with their existence accidentally exposed to the public. Ultimately Nobita and gang decide to travel back to the Cretaceous Period to locate the ancestors of Kyu and Myu, but they're being followed by sinister entities who wants Kyu and Myu for reasons unknown. The movie was originally planned for a March 6, 2020 release, but was postponed to August 7, 2020 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was made available internationally in March 2021.

Meek Mesozoic Mammal: As the gang trek through a Cretaceous forest, they come across a colony of Deltatheridium scampering across their path. However, Doraemon flees up a tree in terror at the sight of the small mammals, due to them resembling mice. Later, Doraemon encounters a Repenomamus, a larger mammal that preyed on small dinosaurs, that eats his piece of the Tomodachi Chocolate meant for Cole the Tarbosaurus, and it promptly flees when Cole comes their way.

Instantly Proven Wrong: Suneo and Gian jokes about the possibility of Nobita finding a real dinosaur fossil early on. Nobita then trips over the fossilized egg containing Kyu and Myu a handful of seconds later. Note that this doesn't happen in Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur, where Nobita found Piisuke's egg several days after making his Rash Promise.

Darker and Edgier: The movie's tone and mood is a lot darker than Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur (which it is a remake of) as well as previous movies including Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicles of the Moon Exploration, Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi, and even the already-dark Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island note  a movie that deals with family abandonment . The stakes at the end are much higher with the Time Patrol no longer allies (temporarily) and the gang witnesses the extinction-level event that made dinosaurs extinct, which the movie portrays with chiling realism. The entire gang, most notably Nobita himself goes through quite a bit of life-threatening dangers as well, even moreso than previous movies, while the trauma suffered by Kyu the outcast is milked for all the drama it's worth.

Good is Not Nice: The seemingly-sinister forces observing the gang upon their arrival? They're the Time Patrol, led by one Commander Natalie and her lackey, Jill, and they're actually on the side of good. Because they have a duty of upholding humanity's history to ensure time runs its course, right up to stopping the heroes from saving the dinosaurs because the extinction-level event in the Cretaceous Period needs to happen in order for the mammals to rise and therefore, humans to exist through evolution.

And then Piisuke appears personally to rescue Nobita and Kyu from drowning in the Cretaceous Sea. Arriving in the Jurassic Period, Nobita accidentally tripped and dropped the Breeding Diorama set - meant for containing Kyu and Myu during their journey - into a swamp. When they made it to the right time in the Cretaceous Period, it turns out the diorama set has increased in size as time passed until it's as large as a small island, now a sanctuary for several populations of dinosaurs.

Gian, Suneo and Shizuka pay Nobita a visit, with Suneo bringing along a camcorder to record Nobita "eating peanuts with his eyes". And then they realize Nobita does, in fact, have a dinosaur in his room. Two dinosaurs, actually. Cue Gian and Suneo losing it, with Suneo telling Myu Gian tastes better. Thankfully Myu is more interested in eating Suneo's spilled peanuts.

Mythology Gag
 Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur / int_26ac510e
comment
Mythology Gag: It goes without saying a lot of ideas from Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur, which this movie is allegedly a remake of, gets repeated here. Like Piisuke, Kyu and Myu's egg is reverted using the Time Cloth and manually hatched by Nobita from inside his blanket, and Nobita making a rash bet at Suneo and Gian that he'd eat food using some facial organs other than his mouth (peanuts through his eyes this time rather than spaghetti through the nose) if he failed to procure an actual dinosaur. Nobita also faces hijinks of trying to hide two dinosaurs from his parents and difficulties in getting them to eat, and finally when Nobita owning a dinosaur is made public to all his friends, everyone then decide to help him by traveling to prehistoric times to find a home for Kyu and Myu. The pterosaurs in the film's Aerial Canyon Chase are Pteranodon, just like in the original adaptation of Nobita's Dinosaur (before the 2006 remake changed them to Quetzalcoatlus). Unlike in the latter, however, the Pteranodon are not chasing after the gang but rather fleeing from an incoming storm and a much bigger pterosaur. Nobita making a bet that "he'd eat peanuts with his eyes if he lose" is actually recycled from one of the manga stories, "Wolf's Den". Kyu spends most of the film learning how to fly, and ultimately succeeds at the very end of the film, in direst times, similar to Gosuke from Doraemon: Nobita and the Winged Braves. The Deus ex Machina at the ending plays out the same way as a previous movie, Doraemon: Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs, in which a gadget belonging to Doraemon – the Breeding Diorama Set – unintentionally becomes a prehistoric sanctuary for entire populations of dinosaurs. And both movies climaxes with the extinction-level event that wipes dinosaurs off the surface of earth, which Doraemon and friends are there to personally witness it while spending much of the climax saving as many dinosaurs of various races as possible.

Anachronistic Animal: While the film already features prehistoric animals from throughout the Late Cretaceous Period living together 66 million years ago, Tapejara and Repenomamus particularly stand out by being Early Cretaceous animals. The gigantic pterosaur, which is of a fictious genus, has a mouthful of teeth. Toothed pterosaurs were extinct by the end of the Cretaceous. Invoked when Suneo and Gian notice a monkey and bat in the Cretaceous, before both of those animals evolved. This is because both are actually the transformed Jill. Kyu is revealed to be the most recent common ancestor to modern birds, from the end of the Cretaceous. In real life, the evolution of modern-type birds happened much earlier.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The major dilemma from the previous film, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur, ends when Piisuke found a herd of wild Futubasaurus and is instantly accepted into his own kind. It doesn't happen here when the gang managed to locate one of the last flocks of Nobisaurus in the Cretaceous Period. While they accept Myu just fine, the flock outright rejects Kyu due to his inability of gliding, with the film spending a huge chunk of time having Kyu learning to get airborne eventually succeeding right at the final act.

Awe-Inspiring Dinosaur Shot: The film begins with Nobita and friends looking in awe at a cast of dinosaurs doing everyday things, though it turns out that this is a figment of Nobita's imagination. Later on, the opening title is portrayed in life evolving from its earliest state from the Pre-Cambrian time to the Mesozoic era where the camera tracks to pass through several dinosaurs and ending with all sorts of them from different time periods walking in a herd as the film's title card flashes. Much later on, the kids and Doraemon explore the Late Cretaceous world and are awed by the myriad of dinosaurs and pterosaurs living at that time.

After bringing the two back to their original time and the K-Pg Extinction Event starts, he motivates Kyu into succeeding at powered flight in order to save his life, therefore making an evolutionary breakthrough that will give rise to a new lineage of feathered dinosaurs that will survive to modern times.

The opening has a demonstration of evolution as not Evolutionary Levels leading to a specific goal, but rather a series of offshoots from the same animal. This is represented by a ray of light that goes through a transitional form and splits into branches to show the different lineages that came from that animal, with one branch repeating this process with the next transitional form (in this case, leading to the dinosaur lineage).

Continuity Nod: Mostly to Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur. When Nobita made a Rash Promise and said he would "eat peanuts with his eyes for failing to find a live dinosaur", Shizuka made a sigh and comments, "Not again…" Not again indeed. Luckily, this time he manages to show them his dinosaurs before he has to bring them back to their original time period. There's yet another Aerial Canyon Chase between the gang and various pterosaurs again, just like in the previous movie, although the chase here is mercifully shorter with the gang evading the pterosaurs by descending into the valley. Plus, the pterosaurs have no interest in the gang. The Dinosaur Hunters are referenced via dialogue, by Time Police agent Jill when conversing with his boss Natalie. For other movies, Luca's hat and a Moonbit doll can be seen in Nobita's bedroom.

Stealth Sequel: The movie is promoted as a remake of the manga chapter "Nobita's Dinosaur", which was adapted into the first Doraemon film, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur, with Nobita raising two dinosaurs instead of one. In a hologram early on the film, Piisuke the Futubasaurus from the previous film can be seen, which audiences dismissed as a Continuity Cameo. But halfway through when Nobita and Kyu nearly drowns in the Cretaceous Sea, Piisuke personally appears and saves them, confirming that yes, that chapter did happen. Piisuke had another cameo before the end credits as one of the random background dinosaurs on Nobisaurus Island.

Oh, Crap!: Gian, Suneo and Shizuka pay Nobita a visit, with Suneo bringing along a camcorder to record Nobita "eating peanuts with his eyes". Literally two minutes later, Doraemon and Nobita had this expression when they realize Kyu and Myu, hiding on the rooftop, has been spotted by the public. Gian and Suneo follow Jill inside his hideout to his office. When they start arguing over who enters there first, Suneo feels something sniffing at him from behind and tells it to wait... then he and Gian turn around to see it's a Velociraptor. Two Velociraptor, actually. Cue the boys freaking out and fleeing from the raptors. Doraemon and Shizuka have this reaction when they realize that the falling star and the following explosion they just witnessed was in fact a giant meteor falling to Earth and crashing into the Yucatan Peninsula, right when they are 66 million years ago. In other words, the K-Pg Extinction Event has begun. The rest of the gang follow suit, particularly Nobita when learning he's forbidden to do anything about it.

Conspicuous CG: The opening montage of prehistoric life, starting in a Paleozoic ocean and ending in a Cretaceous jungle (complete with a T. rex trying to Eat the Camera), is done by CG. Dinosaurs from the Jurassic Period, including the Tuojiangosaurus herd the gang encounters and the Yangchuanosaurus that attacks Nobita and Kyu, are computer-generated, especially evident in their skin structure compared to Kyu and Myu. The Pteranodon flock during the Aerial Canyon Chase scene. Said scene have CG clouds, thunderbolts and rain too. Most untamed dinosaurs in large-scale crowd scenes, in general. Cole and Top have mostly-CG skin textures too, until they're tamed by the Tomodachi chocolate and are animated to appear more cartoonish.

Shout-Out: When the gang are near a fossil excavation site, Suneo makes a joke about Nobita digging up fossilized poop. The Sinoceratops in this film are clearly modeled after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, down to the coloring and having a hole in their fenestrae. Likewise, the Mosasaurus resembles the one from the Jurassic World trilogy. The Velociraptor in the movie share similar color schemes as the Hesperonychus in Walking with Dinosaurs. Towards the end of the film is a homage to Dinosaur, in which Nobita and Kyu have a tender moment on a ledge with a tree before they and everyone else watch a giant meteor fall in the far distance from the island. During the gang's accidental visit to the Jurassic, a Yangchuanosaurus bites onto the neck of a Tuojiangosaurus only to be hit by the latter's thagomizer or spiked tail, similar to the Tyrannosaurus and Stegosaurus battle from the "Rite of Spring" sequence of Fantasia. Like the Stegosaurus, the Tuojiangosaurus ends up losing the battle (albeit to a second Yangchuanosaurus).

Continuity Snarl: When Nobita made a claim that he'd retrieve a new dinosaur to his friends, Gian and Suneo then laughs at him, with Suneo saying dinosaurs couldn't possibly exist at the present after their extinction 66 million years ago. However, Piisuke's appearance reveals that the events of Nobita's Dinosaur did happen in the past and that this movie is actually a Stealth Sequel. Gian and Suneo did partake in the adventure of that earlier movie, as such their disbelief to Nobita's claims seems to contradict with previous events. The continuity between those movies are, to be honest, ridiculously loose. However, it should be noted that Nobita's Dinosaur is actually an extended adaptation of the manga chapter of the same name, which ended with Nobita and Doraemon returning Piisuke to Cretaceous Japan without a hitch; most likely, this movie could instead be a sequel to the original chapter rather than its movie adaptation.

Exact Words: When Tamako asks Nobita if he had been sneaking stray animals into the house, after noting that the food in the refrigerator had started going missing, Nobita insists there are no stray puppies or kittens in his bedroom. But he didn't say a thing about the two dinosaurs he's been hiding.

The Unmasqued World: Nobita's attempts to hide Kyu and Myu from his mother backfires big time when he tries using the Spatial Movement Crayon to teleport them out of his bedroom… onto the rooftop, where the two live dinosaurs are then exposed to dozens and dozens of citizens in the streets.

Oddball in the Series: It does have quite a few oddities compared to other movies before it. The absence of Yume o Kanaete Doraemon as it's theme song, for starters, or any other song at all. All post-2008 movies save for Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island featured this song in their credits, and while one could perceive it as Treasure Island starting a new trend, keep in mind Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicles of the Moon Exploration which is released between these two does feature said song. The Time Police, for once, is depicted in a negative light, trying to prevent Nobita and friends from saving the dinosaur sanctuary to prevent history from going on a wrong path, a first in the entire franchise. The fact that this is a direct sequel (albeit a loose one) to a previous Doraemon film, given Piisuke's presence, another first.

Foreboding Fleeing Flock: As the gang is flying through a canyon, they notice a large flock of Pteranodon heading straight for them, setting up for an Aerial Canyon Chase. But then Doraemon notices that the Pteranodon are not flying after them but past them, revealing that the pterosaurs themselves are fleeing from something. Sure enough there is a storm looming above, as is the shadowy outline of a massive pterosaur in the clouds.

Perilous Prehistoric Seas: Nobita and Kyu fall into the Cretaceous sea while fleeing from the monstrous pterosaur and are approached by a pod of Futabasaurus as the two lose consciousness. However, the plesiosaurs mean no harm and one of them, who happens to be Piisuke, gives the pair a ride to dry land. Afterwards, we are treated to a scene where a Mosasaurus makes a snack out of a sea turtle, which a terrified Suneo witnesses while he and Gian are taken prisoner on Jill's ichthyosaur-shaped submarine.

Shown Their Work
 Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur / int_ffad4e9f
comment
Shown Their Work: The film prominently features feathered dinosaurs, with almost all the maniraptoriformsnote aside from Therizinosaurus, which may be plausible given its larger size being coated in plumage. The fact that birds are dinosaurs themselves becomes a major plot point. Particularly, the short-tailed Kyu gains the ability to fly by flapping his wings, which Jill recognizes as how dinosaurs learned to fly and gave rise to birds. Indeed, one of the theories on how birds achieved powered flight is that their winged theropod ancestors started flapping to right themselves when they fell, and developed shorter tails to make their bodies lighter. While not entirely geographically or temporally accurate, almost all of the Jurassic and Cretaceous dinosaurs featured in the film are at least discovered in Asia, with the exception of Spinosaurus (and even then, it could be justified by Spinosaurus being able to swim). Stegosaurs, sauropods and ceratopsians have the correct foot shapes, rather than elephant-like feet as in usual portrayals. Spinosaurus is depicted as semi-aquatic, with short legs and a dip in the sail. It would have been the most accurate depiction of the animal in films, if it weren't for the fact its tail became obsolete sometime after the film's completion. Hadrosaurs are depicted as quadrupeds (although the juveniles are depicted as bipedal, which is based on an outdated hypothesis). Oviraptor is shown brooding its eggs, based on the holotype specimen that was sitting on its own nest of eggs (and mistaken for an egg thief, hence how Oviraptor got its name). Tuojiangosaurus is depicted with a third pair of spikes at the end of the tail much like its relative Chungkingosaurus, since the thagomizer of Tuojiangosaurus itself is unknown.note This is based on Gregory Paul's interpretation that Chungkingosaurus is a juvenile form of Tuojiangosaurus. However, this should be taken with a grain of salt, given Paul's history of unorthodox dinosaur classification (which led to the confusion between Velociraptor and Deinonychus that Jurassic Park perpetrated). Tarchia is depicted with a low, rounded body with osteoderms set into thick skin, lacking the bony shell seen in stereotypical depictions of ankylosaurs. Tapejara is correctly shown with a more subdued crest on its snout, rather than the Tupandactylus-like crest seen in obsolete reconstructions. While the gigantic pterosaur is a fictional genus, it is correctly depicted as having pycnofibres, walking quadrupedally, hunting on the ground like an azhdarchid, and taking off by vaulting with its wings. Also, the tracks it leaves behind are based on real-life fossils of pterosaur tracks. To this day, it is a popular, but outdated belief that the Mesozoic Era ended 65 million years ago. This film instead shows it ending 66 million years ago according to modern theory. Doraemon's description of the K-Pg Extinction Event is also horrifyingly accurate, with the meteor impact not only sending a blast radius obliterating everything in its path but afterwards kicking up thick clouds of dust that would block the whole Earth from sunlight, causing global cooling and a worldwide destruction of the food chain that would last for millennia. What causes the gang to realize they're in the Jurassic Period is that they encounter stegosaurs alongside allosaurs (in this case, Tuojiangosaurus alongside Yangchuanosaurus), both groups that were prominent during the Jurassic, but died out before the end of the Cretaceous. Grass or grass-like plants are shown in the scenes set in Late Cretaceous Asia. Grass first evolved in Asia during the Late Cretaceous, but are yet to spread elsewhere. By contrast, the scenery in the Jurassic show a lack of grass or flowering plants, which are yet to evolve at the time, instead showing moss and ferns covering the ground. During their brief stint in the Jurassic Period, the gang witnesses a realistic confrontation between carnivore and herbivore, and the necessity of hunting in groups or pairs. In a one-on-one battle, the Tuojiangosaurus quickly overpowers the Yangchuanosaurus with its defenses, but if the Yangchuanosaurus is paired with another one, the Tuojiangosaurus itself gets quickly overwhelmed and taken down. Likewise, one of the Yangchuanosaurus purposely causes the herd to stampede while the other hides in ambush for a straggler, exactly how cooperative hunting works in nature.
