Marvel Legacy (Comic Book) | comment |
Marvel Legacy is the short-lived 2017 relaunch of Marvel Comics, set in the wake of the massive Secret Empire crossover event earlier that summer. As was the case with its predecessors, Marvel Legacy was not a continuity reboot; instead, new books were published, while existing titles/characters were refreshed with new creative teams and status quos.Following the appointment of C.B. Cebulski to the position of editor-in-chief, Marvel announced the A Fresh Start relaunch in February 2018.Compare to 2016's DC Rebirth, a similar relaunch of Marvel's distinguished competition in roughly the same timeframe.

New Season, New Name | |
Marvel Legacy (Comic Book) / int_1c26120d | comment |
New Season, New Name: Yet another "seasonal" relaunch of the entire Marvel Comics line, meant to serve as a jumping on point for new readers. This time, many titles will be hit with Legacy Numbering, meaning titles that would be issue #1 or what not will shoot up into the double or even triple digits, meaning some titles, such as Amazing Spider-Man and Avengers could be seeing numbers in the 700s and some titles actually gaining numbers due to various reasons. Interestingly, certain titles did get Legacy numbering yet others didn't. For instance, of the Defenders line of titles, only Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil got Legacy numbering, though Defenders and Jessica Jones didn't. A fleshed out example of the numbering comes from this infograph for The Incredible Hulk, which reveals that it doesn't include the original first six issues but does include Tales to Astonish, which Hulk took over. Titles with double-billing are only given to one person. The Cable and Deadpool series is given to Deadpool, mostly because Deadpool took over the title after Cable's temporary death partway through while the original Power Man and Iron Fist series goes to Luke Cage as that title was originally Luke Cage: Hero for Hire before becoming Luke Cage, Power Man and then Power Man and Iron Fist.

Mythology Gag | |
Marvel Legacy (Comic Book) / int_26ac510e | comment |
Mythology Gag: The first Legacy variant covers are this, making nods to classic comic covers. The Punisher-as-War Machine storyline was actually conceptualized back in the 80s by the now-late Dwayne McDuffie as a mini-series called "The Killing Machine" where Frank would steal an Iron Man armor and paint it his signature colors, leading to Tony and Frank duking it out with a follow-up having Rhodey take up the armor on his own. Deadpool's title rename hails from the All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch issue #25, where Preston tells Deadpool 2099 that he was "despicable after the Avengers".

Captain America: Sam Wilson and Captain America: Steve Rogers merge to form Captain America for one last issue before picking up as that singular title under a new creative team. Marvel Legacy (Comic Book) / int_927b2f11 | comment |
The Bus Came Back: The rebranding will see someone from Marvel's past making a return to the forefront, with the number one contender being the long-missing Richards Family, who has been thought dead since the events of Secret Wars (2015). While the Marvel Two-In-One story deals with the Richards family, it seems that the return is actually Logan / the original Wolverine. Runaways. Apart from Nico Minoru, who was in A-Force, the rest of the team has been in Comic-Book Limbo for years. Now they're getting a TV series, so naturally Marvel decided to relaunch their comic as well. The reunion of the original Champions in Iceman's comic. While all the heroes, save for Johnny Blaze, had been active, this team was more or less seen as a joke and ignored, especially with the teenage team formed by Kamala Khan doing well. Dr. Strange #382 brings back The Sentry. Flash Thompson returns to the spotlight after having lost the Venom symbiote, and becomes the new Anti-Venom.

Status Quo Is God: Another interesting aspect of the Marvel Legacy initiative is the restoration of classic status quos that had been upheaved over the years, in particular since All-New, All-Different Marvel, although many of these restorations have a twist: Among the first restored status quos, Eddie Brock reclaims the Venom symbiote from its latest host, Lee Price, and returns to being an antihero. However, he doesn't want a repeat of his time as the Lethal Protector and is trying to find a way to cure it of its growing bloodlust. Legacy Character: Unlike DC Rebirth, which sought to bring back lost legacy characters removed by the New 52, Marvel Legacy seeks to restore the series of classic heroes lost in the surge of creating newer heroes. This started with the Venom relaunch, which saw Eddie Brock reunite with the Venom symbiote, and the Nova relaunch, which saw Richard Rider be resurrected. The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel all delve into the idea of legacy as Amadeus is drawn into Banner's time as a gladiator, Miles attempts to figure out his place in the Marvel U and we see what kind of effect Kamala has made in her hometown when she disappears.

HULK MASH!-Up: In Avengers 1,000,000 B.C., Odin Allfather was a member of a group of superpowered individuals during the Stone Age which were remarkably similar to the Avengers. One member was a hulking, ape-like berserker named Starbrand who was granted his enormous strength by an alien energy called the Star Brand. Much like Thor and the modern-day Hulk, Starbrand and Odin would routinely get into fights over who is superior and argued over who would have the honor of slaying an invading Celestial.
