Parliament of Rooks is a 2023 Dark Fantasy Horror comic written and illustrated by Abigail Jill Harding and Richard Starkings.Architect Darius Ravenscar awakens from a strange and troubling dream to find pinfeathers growing from his arms. But he doesn't have time to worry about that now: he has an appointment with Seraphina, Princess of the Four Vales, who has commissioned him to design some new buildings for the city of Devorbik. While Darius hates the king—and the ugly factories that he has raised up in the once-beautiful city—he is smitten with the princess, and has been so since she hired him five years earlier. In spite of her father's disapproval, Seraphina invites Darius to a Masquerade Ball in honor of her birthday. On his journey home, however, Darius is nearly killed by an assassin's arrow, causing him to undergo a horrifying transformation. In the days that follow, Ravenscar finds himself in a precarious predicament that threatens not only his affection for the Princess, but his sanity—and (possibly) his very soul. As he becomes more tormented, he searches for the truth, confronting literal and figurative ghosts from the past and unraveling the mysteries of his own family—ultimately becoming torn between two worlds and two minds. The five installments in the overarching series are: Chapter One: Spring: Released November 14, 2023. Chapter Two: Summer: Released December 12, 2023. Chapter Three: Autumn: Released January 16, 2024. Chapter Four: Winter: Released February 13, 2024. Chapter Five: A Season In Hell: Released March 26, 2024.

Deal with the Devil: Elizabeth Ravenscar made a pact with Malphas, the demon King of Hell, to aquire wealth, prestige, and the power to return her infant son from the dead; in exchange, she became Malphas's lover and servant on Earth. Their "pact" was ultimately revealed to have been a plot to [[spoiler: birth a human son—though whom Malphas could aquire a foothold in the human world.

Nouveau Riche: Downplayed with the Ravenscar family. Elizabeth, the family matriarch, was a socialite and courtesan, and came into her fortune suddenly; however, she was respected in the city for her healing abilities, even being welcomed into the royal court. This was all the result of Elizabeth's pact with Malphas, however, and with her death, the deal was finished; as such, by the present day, the family is no longer well-regarded: the king treats Darius with little respect, disapproving of both his appointment as chief architect and his relationship with Seraphina.

Ironic Name: Sitric, the King of Devorbik, is named for the Viking ruler Sigtrygg Silkbeard; where Sigtrygg is renowned as a patron of the arts (as well as a benefactor of the church and an economic innovator), Sitric is a tyrant who only cares about industry and economic prosperity, scoffing at his daughter's plans for a beautiful new library while approving the construction of factories that pollute and poison his subjects.

Reincarnation: Of a sort: Darius was originally the human son of Elizabeth, who died of exposure as an infant; his mother made a pact with the King of Hell, agreeing to become Malphas's lover and servant in exchange for (among other things) her son being returned to her. Rather than being resurrected as he once was, however, Darius returned to his mother's womb in a new body—that of the half-demon son of Malphus, conceived in the union between Malphus and Elizabeth.

The Reveal
Parliament of Rooks (Comic Book) / int_6b2b3b59
comment
The Reveal: Darius and Rowanna's mother, Elizabeth, was a witch, and she knew about her son's "condition" from his birth. The final two issues have a pileup of these: Elizabeth wasn't just a witch, but the consort of Malphus, the demon King of Hell—who is Darius's real father (hence his horrifying, corvid-esque transformations). Actually, Elizabeth used to be a common prostitute and beggar until Malphas gave her power and prestige. He also gave her Darius: her original, deceased son, reborn as the half-human Prince of Hell. Rowanna was conceived to give Elizabeth some leverage, by giving her a child whom Malphas didn't create (and, as such, had no claim over). But Wait, There's More! King Sitric is currently host to Malphus, and the evil voice Darius has been hearing belongs to him; he—not Darius—is the demonic corvid monster whose coming was foretold in legend. As the icing on the cake, there's the reveal that Malphas's "deal" with Elizabeth was simply part of a plan to give him a foothold on Earth—in the body of his son. Oh, and he has the souls of Elizabeth, Calisandra, and Rowanna imprisoned in his body.

Meaningful Name: Darius's family name is Ravenscar; he is the son of Malphas (a raven-like demon), and in the first issue he suffers a near-fatal injury, causing him to undergo a monstrous corvid-esque transformation—which progresses outward from his wound. Darius itself is a Greek name meaning "Wealthy", and "Preserver" in Persian culture; for the last member of an aristocratic family. The princess's name is Seraphina, derived from '"Seraphim''; in Hebrew scripture, the seraphim are celestial beings known for their intense passion and zealous love: fitting, for a passionate, romantic woman who happens to be the avatar of the Moon Maiden.

Transformation Horror
Parliament of Rooks (Comic Book) / int_7eda7f78
comment
Transformation Horror: Darius's transformations are made of this. They begin innocuously enough, with pinfeathers emerging from the skin on his arms; however, after an assassin makes an attempt on his life and severely injures him, oily black feathers erupt over his entire body, his teeth become sharp and pointed, and his eyes turn golden and bird-like. Finally, at the masquerade ball, his alter ego forces its way out, causing him to transform in full: his teeth fall out as his fangs erupt, feathers tear through his skin like spines, and his hands become talons (which rip his scalp open, leaving rivulets of blood trailing down his face). It's stated outright that the process would be fatal for a normal human. That's nothing compared to his Kaiju transformation in Issue #3. (The same transformation occurs in Issue #4, but this time it's instantaneous.)

Backstory: A portion of Issue #5 is devoted to The ghost of Darius's mother, Elizabeth, providing the backstory of the Ravenscar family: Elizabeth was once a prostitute of Devorbik, and was expelled from her brothel during a snowstorm with her infant son, Darius, in her arms. Darius froze to death, but Elizabeth was saved by a coven of witches, who taught her their mystical arts. Their healing magicks failed to grant her the power she craved—including the ability to return her son to life—and she summoned the demon king Malphas. The King of Hell seduced her, promising her heart's desire in exchange for becoming his consort; on his promise, Darius was reborn (as Malphas's half-demon son), Elizabeth became a wealthy and respected healer, and Ravenscar Manor was built. Darius's sister was born to a human man, in order to give Elizabeth a child that wasn't under Malphas's control.

The Lost Lenore: Calisandra, Darius's fiancée, took her own life on their wedding day after being driven mad by visions of his demonic corvid form. Darius is literally and figuratively haunted by her: her ghost is bound to the grounds of the Ravenscar estate.

Creepy Crows: After he begins his transformation, Darius is constantly followed by evil-looking, red-eyed rooks: first a lone bird tapping at his window, then several of them following him as he rides into the city, then (after his first full transformation) a whole flock following him wherever he goes. The demon Malphas speaks to Darius through them.

But Wait, There's More! King Sitric is currently host to Malphus, and the evil voice Darius has been hearing belongs to him; he—not Darius—is the demonic corvid monster whose coming was foretold in legend.
