The Last Lord of El Dorado is a comic created by Don Rosa and first published in the Danish Anders And Co in June, 1998 (first American publication Uncle Scrooge #311, July 1998). Serving as a sequel to the classic Carl Barks story The Gilded Man, and a continuation of Rosa's own story Treasure Under Glass, the story revolves around Scrooge McDuck, along with Donald Duck and Huey, Dewey and Louey, searching for the legendary golden city of El Dorado.Shortly after the events of Treasure Under Glass, the Ducks are using the information they uncovered during their adventure to search for sunken treasure in the Caribbean. While exploring the wreck of the Dukatenesel, Donald discovers a golden plaque commemorating the founding of a bank consortium in New Granada in 1539 by the-then powerful Welser bankers. Intrigued by this, Scrooge and the Ducks head to Nuremberg and meets with the modern banking company that owns the remains of the Welser property. As the account is thought to be worthless (not to mention lost), Scrooge buys the bank for $1000 (with the excuse that he's a collector and sees it as a novelty) and the director calls the owner of the company to report the good news. However, said owner turns out to be none other than Flintheart Glomgold!Knowing that Scrooge would never throw away money on something worthless, Glomgold immediately figures out that his old enemy must be on to something big, and heads to Germany to pick up his trail. Meanwhile, the Ducks have been given access to the only remaining assets of the Welser bank, a few ancient documents that cover the details of the bank and it's founding. In 1536, Gonzalo de Quesada deserted his post as governor of Cartagena to lead an expidition into the unexplored jungles of New Granada. At the same time, German banker Nikolaus Federmann and Spanish conquistador Sebastian de Balcazar had the same idea, deserting their posts in Venezuela and Colombia in search of... something. The three expeditions reached the same spot by chance in February of 1538, the Cundinamaraca Plateu of Omagua in modern-day Peru. There, the three leaders signed a contract, becoming co-owners of the property through the bank set up by Federmann. While this explains the origin of the bank, Scrooge and Donald are still puzzled over the secrecy, until the Junior Woodchucks Guidebook comes to the rescue once again - Omagua is another name for the mythical El Dorado! The documents lead the Ducks to a monastery in Bogota, which had been the original location of the golden plaque until it's theft in 1580 by an agent of the Welsers. Scrooge returns the plaque to the abbess in return for access to their archives, where they find the original contract signed by Quesada, Federmann and Balcazar, but Glomgold, disguised as a nun, steals it and runs off, only to be pursued by Donald. The chase leads to a chasm where Donald manages to take the contract back, only for Glomgold to cut the roap bridge he's standing on, with Scrooge being more concerned with getting the contract back than saving Donald. After getting Donald back, the Ducks decipher the location of El Dorado and head into the mountains of Peru with a bulldozer, searching for the real El Dorado - an enormous collection of gold hidden in the mud of an ancient lake bed that had once been used by the natives as sacrifices for their gods. Finding the lake is little trouble, which has even been looked over by other treasure hunters over the centuries, making Donald doubt that this can be the right place. However, Scrooge is insistant, and has the lake drained, with the intent of using the bulldozer to dig through the mud. At this point, Glomgold shows up again trying to trick Scrooge into leaving, only for Scrooge to reveal that he's seen through all of Glomgolds disguises so far and hasn't been fooled at all.Unfortunately, the Ducks have no luck in their digging, making it seem like the location is wrong after all. However, the nephews stumble across a large boulder on a summit overlooking the lake that has an indentation shaped like the golden plaque from the monestary, making them realize that this is the original location of the lake, which had been drained by Quesada and replaced with a dense jungle to hide the location of the treasure. Unfortunately, Glomgold has come to the same conclusion, and ties up the boys to keep them from telling Scrooge. Meanwhile, Scrooge's digging has caused the rock foundation of the valley to become unstable, causing the whole area to crumble, even as Glomgold returns and begins arguing with Scrooge in an attempt at getting the bank back. Donald finds the nephews and releases them just in time for the summit to collapse, even as Scrooge and Glomgold come to an agreement over the bank - the jungle floor is revealed to be a massive trove of gold, the result of centuries of religious rites in the area.Glomgold gloats over his victory, only for Scrooge to reveal that while Glomgold did buy the bank back, Scrooge still owns the deposit, which he removed as soon as he bought the bank, and not only does Glomgold have no claim to the gold, he now also owes about 400 years of interest on the deposit, which, considering the amount of gold in the treasure, comes to the tune of roughly all the money in the world! However, Scrooge's triumph is equally short-lived when the group is approached by a pair of inspectors from the Columbian government, who points out something neither Glomgold nor Scrooge took into account - just as no interest has been paid for centuries, neither has any taxes since Quesada died in 1579, meaning that the property was defaulted to the state of Columbia in 1637, and none of them have any claim on El Dorado. As the Ducks prepare to head home, Scrooge takes his loss surprisingly well, as the Columbian government allowed him to keep the deed to El Dorado as a souvenir, but more importantly, no amount of gold could ever buy him the memory of Glomgold thinking he owed his arch-enemy all the money in the world.

Paper-Thin Disguise: Glomgold was really stretching it in this story; he dressed up as a woman twice, neither time did he try to hide his beard, and his waitress wig was the head of a mop. Scrooge even lampshades it during the climax, pointing out that he saw right through Glomgolds disguises.

City of Gold: Averted - El Dorado wasn't a golden city, or even a city at all, it was a fairly primitive native tribe who happened to have access to a ton of gold. The name actually refers to their high priest, The Golden Man.

Covers Always Lie: The cover made by Rosa depicts Scrooge facing the Golden Man as he rises from the lake. The Golden Man never appears in the story proper, save for a brief shot during a flashback.

Alternate History: While Quesada, Federmann and Balcazar were all real people, and the meeting between the three did happen, it wasn't over El Dorado, and it certainly didn't lead to an alliance - it was a territorial squabble, as all three wanted to claim New Granada for themselves.

Did Not Think This Through: Apparently, none of the "lords" of El Dorado put much thought into what would happen once they returned to civilization, considering they all deserted their posts to go treasure hunting. All three ended up in prison, with Federmann and Balcazar dying there.

Pooled Funds: Subverted. The story starts with the Ducks salvaging a pile of silver coins from a shipwreck. Scrooge tries to swim in it, but because the coins had spent hundreds of years underwater, they've fused into one solid mass, causing a head injury for Scrooge.
