The Lightning Saga is a 2007 Bat Family Crossover between Justice League of America, Justice Society of America and Legion of Super-Heroes.It is written by Brad Meltzer and Geoff Johns and illustrated by Shane Davis, Ed Benes and Dale Eaglesham. It runs through Justice League of America (2006) #8-10 and Justice Society of America (2007) #5-6 (with Justice Society #7 serving as an epilogue).During the lead-up to Infinite Crisis, the Justice League splintered in response to the revelations of Identity Crisis (2004) and the events of The OMAC Project and JLA: Crisis of Conscience. After staying disbanded during 52, the World's Greatest Superheroes have now officially reformed during the events of Meltzer and Benes' inaugural arc The Tornado's Path. While cleaning up the loose ends from that case, Batman and Black Lightning have made an unexpected discovery. Trident, a minor villainous participant, is actually a time-displaced, amnesiac, and mentally erratic member of the Legion of Super-Heroes: Val Armorr AKA Karate Kid.Meanwhile, the Justice Society has also just emerged from the events of 52. While the team hadn't formally disbanded during that year like the League, nearly everyone but the old guard had drifted apart and moved on. However, the team came back together to fight and win World War III (i.e. Black Adam's rampage). In the conflict's aftermath, and inspired by a remark from Batman, the JSA has embraced the 'Society' aspect of their name. Johns and Eaglesham's inaugural arc, The Next Age saw the Society launch the largest membership drive in their history. Their goal is to not only expand their ranks following their recent losses and a year of relative inactivity, but to also continue helping mentor the next generation of legacy heroes. One of these new recruits brought in during the events of The Next Age is a brand-new Starman...who, as it turns out, is also amnesiac, mentally erratic, and claims to come from the Future.Quite a coincidence...or, is it?Now, and as in times past, the JLA and JSA must join forces to investigate this mystery. Together, the two teams must discover why the Legion has come back to the Present Day...and why the greatest heroes of tomorrow would try to conceal themselves from not only the greatest heroes of yesterday and today, but from their very inspiration and old friend Superman...Beyond the fallout for the duration of Meltzer and Johns' respective runs, The Lightning Saga had fairly major repercussions for the DC Universe through the remainder of the late 2000s: It saw the return of Wally West, Linda Park, and their children following their disappearances during Infinite Crisis. Their return tied directly into the concurrent conclusion of The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive and Bart Allen's murder at the hands of Inertia and the Rogues. After taking down Inertia and avenging Bart, Wally returned to active duty and reclaimed the mantle of the Flash until Barry Allen's resurrection during Final Crisis a year later. The crossover also marked the return of the classic Legion of Super-Heroes for the first time since Zero Hour: Crisis in Time! and their introduction into the post-Infinite Crisis continuity. Several Legionnaires reintroduced here would go on to become players in Countdown to Final Crisis. Finally, this story became the opening installment of a Legion Trilogy that Johns would continue with Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes over in Action Comics later that year and then ultimately conclude in 2008's Legion of 3 Worlds.

Sure, Let's Go with That: The Legionnaires are more than happy to let everyone think they were trying to bring back Wally West, when their actual target was Bart Allen.

Underestimating Badassery: The League and Society try to stop the Legionnaires from doing whatever it is they're trying to do. When they try to remotely turn off the Legion flight rings to remove their forcefields, no one was expecting that the Legionnaires might have a self-repair feature in case of sabotage. Jay Garrick brags that the Justice Society fought Adolf Hitler and thus they can handle the Legionnaires, leading to this:

Adaptational Sexuality: Dawnstar was only ever shown to be attracted to men, primarily Wildfire, in the Pre-Crisis and Five Years Later Legion. Here, it is greatly implied she was in a relationship with a Thanagarian woman.

Wham Shot: The climax of Justice League of America' #10. Batman was right that the Legion was trying to bring back the Flash, but he was wrong about which one. While Wally West and his family were brought back, they weren't who the Legion wanted either. It would later be revealed the Legionnaires wanted Bart Allen.

The Bus Came Back: This story featured the full return of what is considered to be the original (or as close to the original as possible) Legion of Super-Heroes, branching off from a point after the first Crisis but ignoring the Five Years Later continuity in full.

Continuity Nod: The story arc is chock-full of references to classic Legion's stories: The Death of Lightning Lad, Star Boy being expelled out after killing in self-defense, Computo killing one of Triplicate Girl's bodies... It is mentioned that Supergirl also owns one Legion Ring, which she got in Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Dream Girl is now stated to be able to see the future thanks to the Dreaming. After she's awakened from her catatonic state, she tells Doctor Destiny that she's foreseen his violent death at the hands of the one who owns the Dreamstone. This isn't the first time the villain's pissed off said owner.
