He also takes out her date after he started belittling her and putting her down for being unfeminine. He helps Mahiru realize not all men are bad and also reconnect her with her father, and also works to help fix her friendship with Hiyoko. He gently assures Mikan that she does matter to him, and that he is thankful to be her friend. He also gets Hiyoko to finally apologize for constantly bullying her. He works with Hiyoko, making her favorite meals so as to reconcile with her and then saves her when she nearly gets raped, calling for help and refusing to give her up. He bonds with Celestia via board games like in canon, but when a competitor uses her real name against her, he reassures her by telling her both names fit her and regardless of what her name is, he cherished their times together. Him playing her fantasies as her C-Rank knight certainly helps matters too, unlike in canon. He helps Peko feel more human and happy, and he fights for her place in the Kuzuryu clan after her attempted suicide. Although it doesn't work, it helps Peko understand that she has more value than just a weapon. He also helps Kyoko with her family drama, reconnect with her father, and make her think of what kind of detective she wants to be, although it also results in her parting ways with her grandfather Fuhito. She literally says that Makoto is the reason why she began to care about the girls in the dorm. In a more familial sense, he also helps the Warriors of Hope with their various traumas, playing into their character class by labeling himself a bard and trying his best with them, much unlike their neglectful homeroom teacher. He also gives Jataro filling meals, encourages Nagisa to get rest, gives Kotoko a Cooldown Hug after learning of her Trauma Button, offers to help Monaca with her situation despite learning of her Obfuscating Disability, and while he does accidentally make them think he's sick of them and leaves them Driven to Suicide, he rescues them in spite of dislocating his arm and getting his hand cut, refusing to let go without all of them. He bonds with Chiaki with games in general, but the ship sails once her friendship with Hajime is temporarily severed after their latest conversation about Hajime ends with him blaming Makoto for the school's end. Makoto stayed by her side, helped fix their friendship, and even baked her special cookies of her favorite video game characters. Even Chiaki is surprised by this outcome. He's a massive help for Chisa, as he not only helps her take care of the dorm, but his various actions helping the girls, her included, make her very affectionate towards him. She even considers him to be perfect to the school's therapist, Miaya Gekkogahara, holding him to the same level of adoration as Kyosuke before her Broken Pedestal moment. Once she recovers, she chooses to support Makoto to the fullest, even insisting that Makoto calls her Chisa-chan when they are alone. He's the reason why Junko changed her ways, as his involvement in her plans makes them fail at almost every turn. That frustration would lead to her slowly losing her sanity, shown by alternate personalities popping up. It would eventually all come crashing down after her failed attempt to murder Makoto, which leads to her breaking down... only to be saved by Makoto who stated she didn't need to be Despair, but herself. Poor Communication Kills: In chapter 16, Everyday Life with Li'l Ultimates, Makoto, working as a teacher's aide, is put to work with the Warriors of Hope, and all of them become very attached to him and he becomes close to them as well. In doing so, he's able to figure out that something's wrong with their home lives, and works alongside Miaya Gekkogahara, Hope's Peak Elementary's nurse and his grandfather (a judge) to help them out. However, the stress of trying to help with their various problems and the reality of the bureaucracy being too slow to help out causes him to repeat the Madness Mantra "It'll all be over soon" in getting them the help they need. Unfortunately, the Warriors of Hope misunderstand what he means, and believe that they are so draining to deal with that Makoto is counting the days until he can leave. After another horrible day, they believe he's done dealing with them, and this is what spurns them to commit suicide. When Makoto comes back and sees the suicide note, he's horrified to see them apologize for seemingly upsetting him, though thankfully, he is able to save them and have them testify about their home lives, earning them new home lives free of abuse. After she contacts him and says she's not coming back after hearing the full story from her father and grandparents from her mother's side, he goes to Hope's Peak Academy to try to force her back to him using his connections in the law system, but at the reminder of the one who broke his perfect record, who is Reiji Naegi, Makoto's grandfather, he has a Villainous Breakdown not unlike the culprits in Ace Attorney and leaves enraged, vowing to make Makoto pay. A vengeance in progress as we see him being contacted by MEXT in Chapter 18, ending the chapter with him thinking that his revenge is coming sooner than expected... The following chapter reveals that the man whom he was sent to find was Kyosuke Munakata, the latter who has lost Chisa's affection and does not react to Makoto's name well. He also hasn't changed his goals with Hope's Peak Academy, and is seemingly very glad to be given a shot at revenge. | |

While still mischievous and teasing, she has no intentions of harming any of her classmates ever again, being happy with simply teasing her classmates and tempting Makoto every now and again. In canon, Ryoko Otonashi is simply Junko's amnesiac self, made after she tested the memory-erasing process she'd use on her classmates to set off the killing game. Here, she's instead an alternate personality that serves as Junko's conscience, trying to keep Junko from going through her despair-inducing plans and out of trouble, calling her out for how little she cares for how badly hurt her classmates could be from her plans. While she initially fails, she is eventually able to help Junko out of a catatonic state with assistance from Makoto after she undergoes a Villainous Breakdown. As a result, she becomes a personality that stays with Junko, reminding her every now and again to not squander their second chance. Similarly, Mukuro is able to break free of Junko's influence and begins putting her foot down, warning Makoto of Junko's true talent and also working to ensure that her plans do not go too far. Since their older sibling figure was Makoto rather than Junko, the Warriors of Hope don't go on their anti-adult crusade, and instead become Makoto's little siblings. In particular, Monaca has the biggest improvement in morality; while still mischievous and playful, it's far less malevolent than her canon counterpart, and she does genuinely love Makoto and want the best for him, and also comes to genuinely see her classmates as friends. This is mostly seen during their suicide attempt, ironically: Monaca in canon planned to back out at the last second, but here, Monaca plans to join her friends in their suicide attempt. | |

Thankfully, they manage to work it out and restore their friendship after Jin announces the Ultimate Talent Development Program, although things are still awkward between Makoto and Hajime. Juzo Sakakura. In canon, he was portrayed as a violent brute who let his fists do the talking, and would even kill people who opposed his best friend Kyosuke Munakata; despite his actions, however, it was hinted that he truly wanted to help, with mixed results. In this story, the only positive quality shown so far is his loyalty to Kyosuke, and nothing else, as in Chapter 19, when his friend Chisa asks him about her failures as a teacher concerning Hiyoko almost being raped and sold, he coldly reminds her that her job is just a cover-up for Kyosuke to become Headmaster and that students are just a distraction. Him considering Makoto the root of the school's problems and agreeing to Kyosuke's plans doesn't help either. Also applies to Kyosuke Munakata, who is portrayed here with a personality close to the one he had in Side:Future. His cold attitude is already shown at the beginning of Chisa's chapter (like him showing disdain with the concept of Lucky Students by the tone of voice), but it goes further when an incident happens (see Sonia and Akane's chapters), when the man is either unreceptive to Chisa's main concern and focuses on the school's next actions, or when he starts blaming either Chisa or the student in question. It's only later on when Chisa finds both of her classmates at a bar, in a drunk state, that he reveals his intentions: becoming the Headmaster to keep the status quo by blackmailing the Steering Committee using Chisa and Juzo's work. If what he said during this is true, then he also planned to not only get rid of the Reserve Course altogether (and possibly of the Lucky Students) but 'reform' the Ultimates to get rid of their wild behaviors and make them act like ladies and gentlemen, completely ignoring the fact their quirks were the reason they were enrolled in the first place. | |

The capital of Novoselic is named Cobain, after Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, the band that inspired Sonia's last name and Novoselic itself. When the Steering Committee's crimes are discovered when they are caught by peeking on the girls, they envy a "...a famous foreign mobster who had evaded his taxes". Part of what helps Mukuro break away from Junko is seeing how they reflect Locus and Felix. Specifically, Mukuro notes how Locus having the idea that he is "...nothing but a suit of armor and a gun..." who simply follows orders is similar to her, while she notes that Felix's Smug Super tendencies ("At the end of the day, if I'm stronger than you and if I'm faster than you, then I can kill you! And that's better than anything money can buy!") are similar to those of Junko. Even afterwards, Red vs. Blue becomes one of Mukuro's favorite shows. In the very first part of the story, Junko's reaction to Makoto chastising her for mistreating Mukuro takes cues from Freeza in Dragon Ball Z Abridged. As mentioned earlier, Fuhito Kirigiri's Villainous Breakdown takes inspiration from the culprits of Ace Attorney. However, he takes particular inspiration from Kristoph Gavin and Manfred von Karma. From the former, his Villainous Breakdown begins with him calling out the last name of his enemy as a Madness Mantra as well as his belief that only he can determine what's right, and from the latter, both wanted female descendants (Franziska von Karma and Kyoko Kirigiri) to continue their life's work, but both ultimately became better people due to them being around the protagonists. Continuing the similarities between Fuhito and Manfred, see the dialogue they spew when each undergoes a Villainous Breakdown. The nations of Borginia, from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, and Fortuna, from Devil May Cry 4, are heavily entwined in Novoselic's history. Beware the Nice Ones: Makoto is generally considered one of the gentlest people that one can know, and is an absolute Nice Guy and All-Loving Hero. However, he does not take kindly to seeing those he cares about being threatened in any way, which also makes him a Chick Magnet, though he is somewhat oblivious to this. During an attempted coup and assassination on Sonia Nevermind, he sees her treacherous ambassador Wudagest attempt to shoot her, pushing her out of the way and getting shot in the shoulder for his troubles. When Wudagest accuses her of being no different than her evil ancestors, Makoto breaks down that he does not trust the people while Sonia's faith is in her country and her people. When he stumbles upon Aoi Asahina being insulted by her date (a male model) as sweaty and unfeminine when she calls him out for getting mad at a girl for dropping ice cream on his outfit (she was undergoing a crisis of femininity, and was tricked by Junko Enoshima into thinking that a date would help her self-esteem) out of jealousy due to others paying attention to her instead of him, Makoto punches him and gives him a brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech, humiliating him. After Hiyoko Saonoji pulls a number of pranks with the potential for severe harm (putting tacks in the shoes of Sayaka Maizono, nearly tricking Akane Owari into eating poison ivy which could have killed her, and kicking a ladder being used by her favorite target Mikan Tsumiki), Makoto decides he's had enough of her bratty behavior and tricks her into drinking mouthwash disguised as fruit punch. That being said, when her insulting two drunk delinquents leads to her nearly getting raped, Makoto (who was getting agar-agar for anmitsu in an attempt to rebuild relations between her and the rest of the class) immediately springs into action and defends her, taking several punches but refusing to divulge her location. It's these actions that make her undergo a Heel Realization and fall for him. | |

Shown Their Work: There's quite a lot of research put into the story. Sonia's chapter looks into the culture of medieval Europe, as Novoselic's isolationism was the result of the nations believing that Novoselic's success after the death of their tyrannical king could only come from witchcraft, as per the Divine Right of Kings, kings were chosen by God to lead the country, and actions against them would be sacrilegious. For Aoi's chapter, there's a look into the roles of rugby players as well as Japanese terminology, namely the concept of Yamato Nadeshiko. Mahiru's chapter, however, looks into a darker part of Japanese culture: their less-than-progressive look at those with mental illnesses like anxiety. There is also a look into the psychological effects of parents being separated from their children, particularly the vilification of the present parent, and the deification of the absent parent. Hiyoko's chapter looks into the fact that she solely uses a fan to have her be a practitioner of Su-Odori. The Warriors' Of Hope chapter involves the fact that a school-based scandal would involve MEXT, as well as the bad track record Japan has (at least as of 2018) with reporting child abuse and the reasons behind such, incorporating it into why Makoto couldn't get them out of their abusive households until their suicide attempt. | |
