At over 900,000 words, Exercises in Gratitude is the longest piece of Splatoon fanfiction on AO3.One morning, a 13-year-old Inkling girl Malley wakes up in her apartment, scared out of her mind. This is normal. She then notices that she appears to have been sleeping next to her own corpse. This isn't normal. After some additional panic over "Dead Malley", the mysterious stranger decides to take on the moniker (it's apparently better than her real name), as well as remain Malley's roommate for the foreseeable future (Malley does not have a choice in the matter). You see, Dead Malley is really an Octoling with plans for Inkopolis... plans which are similarly interrupted when a dam bursts and floods the poor Inkopolis neighborhood where Malley and her friends reside.Now trapped in a crowded apartment building filled with displaced and disoriented tenants, a Ragtag Band of Misfits are forced to attempt to regain control over a rapidly deteriorating situation. But as these situations go, things naturally get worse before they get better. |
