The contentious relationship between Mirabel and Isabela is made much worse in this story, courtesy of an incident about a year before the story takes place, where Mirabel accidentally collides with Isabela as she is just going about her business. Isabela called Mirabel the Spanish equivalent of a “whoreâ€�, and her vines pushed Mirabel away so hard that she tumbled over the second floor railing. Had it not been for Casita catching Mirabel and breaking her fall, she would have been seriously injured had she hit the courtyard floor below. The story references eating disorders and body image issues when Isabela misses lunch as a result of being held up by the townspeople demanding her services, and then has to go the entire afternoon on an empty stomach. We see her thoughts about feeling guilty on eating as much as she wants, in fear of putting on weight and becoming a source of malicious gossip. Additionally, the story makes references to sexual assault. The topic is brought up by MatÃas when he comforts Mirabel after an unpleasant experience with a would-be pervert. | |

Deconstruction Fic: While one must give Disney some slack for this, since one can't really squeeze an entire healing process from years of trauma and mistreatment into a single movie, this fic does portray a more realistic approach to healing and forgiveness within the characters: While Mirabel was quick to forgive and reconcile with Isabela and Abuela in the canon movie, here, she understands that the effects from years of mistreatment and trauma don't just disappear instantly with apologies. Even after Isabela apologises to Mirabel, she remained conflicted, torn between immediately reconciling with her eldest sister and coming to terms with the pain she experienced. Nonetheless, Mirabel eventually forgives Isabela. However, she isn't so quick to do the same for Abuela, when the latter returns to the Encanto with Bruno. While Mirabel does acknowledge Abuela's reasons, she still doesn't forgive her immediately, instead stating that Abuela will have to earn her forgiveness by proving that she really does intend to make up for what she had done to her and the entire family. While Bruno appeared quick to smooth things out with his family and the townspeople who vilified him in the movie, here, he carries far more resentment and frustration with Abuela and the townspeople, even going so far as to lampshade how the latter's vilification was not only unwarranted, but everything they blamed him for was either completely out of anyone's control, or were caused by said townspeople themselves. He also wasn't so quick to forgive Abuela either. While acknowledging the pain she experienced at seeing Pedro be brutally murdered right in front of her eyes, he points out that it still didn't give her the right to see him and the rest of the family as mere tools in her misguided attempt to keep the Miracle alive, nor did it justify her letting the townspeople go ham on him, or mistreating Mirabel so much that she ran away in the first place. Additionally, when he and Abuela return to the Encanto, and the townspeople try to scapegoat him for causing Casita's collapse, he does not take things sitting down and vows to stand up against the townspeople, although MatÃas does help with putting the fear of God in them. | |

Point of Divergence: Mirabel running away from the Encanto following Antonio’s successful gift ceremony forms the premise of this story. In the movie, Mirabel is only able to reach the river where her Abuelo Pedro sacrificed his life for his family after the Miracle dies and Casita collapses. Here, Mirabel is able to cut through the same mountain when a magical butterfly opens up a tunnel for her to pass through. Naturally, Mirabel running away from the Encanto turns her entire family’s world upside down, unwittingly exposing the rifts and cracks that had previously been forming unnoticed since her failed gift ceremony ten years prior. This deviates from the movie, where it takes Mirabel discovering the cracks threatening her home to uncover the rifts forming within her family. Because of Mirabel’s departure, Bruno comes out of hiding to determine whether the future has changed. Look at Didn't See That Coming above. Mirabel meets a woman, Julia, gathering herbs in the forest after she leaves the river behind. Julia kindly takes Mirabel into her home to give her a place to stay. Antonio is left devastated after Mirabel leaves without so much of a word or goodbye, so much so that he leaves the Encanto with his animal friends to go in search for her. His departure further exposes the rifts forming within the family and kickstarts the chain of events that sees the status quo forever changed. Abuela’s word and authority is law within the Madrigal household. However, after Antonio leaves the Encanto, Dolores does the unthinkable and not only shouts back at Abuela for being the main reason why he and Mirabel ran away, she also slaps Abuela across the face in her rage. Isabela also faces Dolores’ wrath and hand when she dismisses Mirabel leaving as nothing worth caring about. Dolores drags her through the mud for being a terrible older sister and being the other reason why Mirabel ran away from the Encanto. In the movie, Mirabel is the one who sees the cracks that are tearing the house apart. Here, Dolores is the one who sees the cracks when Bruno shows them to her after revealing the two new visions he had. As a result of Dolores’ outburst, both her parents, as well as Julieta and AgustÃn are forced to face where they went wrong with their respective loved ones. For Julieta especially, this prompts her to put her foot down and no longer listen to Abuela and the ungrateful townspeople of the Encanto who only demand the services of the family’s gifts and never give anything back in return. The marriage engagement between Mariano and Isabela falls apart just like in the movie, although that happens because Dolores meets the Guzmáns secretly and reveals the truth about what Abuela has been doing to the family, prompting the Guzmáns to tell Isabela that the engagement is off when they meet her in the town square in the subsequent chapter. In the movie, Isabela is never seen on screen apologising to Mirabel for the years of mistreatment she did to her youngest sister. Here, Isabela has a Heel Realization when Casita locks her in the nursery and she finds herself compelled to read Mirabel’s diary, discovering how much her younger sister has suffered over the years, and how much she had a big part to play in Mirabel’s suffering and eventual departure from the Encanto. Later on, she finally apologises to Mirabel for the years of mistreatment, and promises to make amends and be the older sister she was supposed to be from the beginning. Unlike his canon counterpart, who only revealed himself to his family near the end of the movie, Bruno is convinced by Dolores to reveal himself to Julieta and AgustÃn and show them his vision of Mirabel finding love. He also explains to his sister and brother-in-law why he went into hiding in the first place, when he was not seen doing so on-screen in the movie. Unlike in the canon movie, where it was Mirabel confronting Abuela's actions that led to Casita's collapse, here it was the remaining family members who tear Abuela a new one after she escapes her confinement and tries to force things back to what they were. Ultimately, it was Bruno, who makes an unexpected appearance to his family at the climactic moment, who triggers the collapse of Casita by showing Abuela his second vision, declaring that she is the reason why the Miracle will die and they will lose their home. In a shift from canon events, Abuela arrives at the river where Pedro died by her own volition, not because she was looking for Mirabel. Additionally, it was Bruno whom she reveals what really happened to Pedro to, not Mirabel. When Casita is rebuilt and Mirabel restores the magic, Pedro Madrigal appears to his family, and not only forgives Abuela for her mistakes, but also returns the gifts that were lost in the collapse, and even grants those who joined the family via marriage and love (i.e. AgustÃn, Félix and MatÃas) gifts of their own. On top of the magic being restored, Mirabel is finally given her own magical room, ten years after her door disappeared during her gift ceremony. | |
