Shout-Out: Many of the routines described in this fic are based on examples from Real Life gymnasts: Sumire Yoshizawa: Takana Tatsuzawa and Sumire Kita. Yuri Hikawa: Chisaki Oiwa. Yuna Seong: Chaewoon Kim. Larisa Lebedeva: Yeon-jae Son. Yuliya Krylenko: Viktoriia Onopriienko and "pretty much every super-flexible rhythmic gymnast from the early 2000s". Ayelet Weiss: Linoy Ashram. Elena Plisetskaya: Dina Averina. Fox's moves during his duel with Yuliya are based on Spanish mens' RG routines, in particular from Ivan Fernandez, except for one move borrowed from Yulia Barsukova's ball routine in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Hanako's ball routine is one long homage to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, from the music to her starting and ending poses. Its parody title, "YoYo's Bizarre Adventure", also comes from a Persona Memeverse video, "Persona 5 Strikers in a Nutshell (Part 1)". Futaba shouts "Allez gymnastique!" in chapter 8, a Call-Back to her "Allez cuisine!" quote from Strikers itself. Later in the same chapter, she also says the Catchphrase "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing" from Mythbusters. After being downed during her duel with Larisa, Haru recovers with a slow sit-up, a la The Undertaker. The author's notes for chapter 10 mention that he planned to add a few more wrestling references, but let go of them as he started writing the chapter. In chapter 17, Shadow Yuri's Transformation Sequence into her Monarch form seems to come straight out of Sailor Moon, complete with an In the Name of the Moon statement at the end. The narrator even lampshades this when describing how it "wouldn't have looked out of place in a Magical Girl action anime, as either a hero or a villain". The final battle in that same chapter includes a few movie quotes: Joker says "Skull... smash." when planning with his teammates before the fight. Oracle says "YES! I AM INVINCIBLE!" after completing her hack to disable the Castle's cognitive spell. Shadow Yuri says "If you're not first, you're last!" to explain her Second Place Is for Losers mentality. Sumire uses "You Know My Name", the theme song from Casino Royale (2006), as the music for her ribbon final. This also serves as a shout-out to Real Life rhythmic gymnast Sumire Kita, who used the James Bond theme for one of her own ribbon routines. In chapter 20's mock competition, the leotard Yuri wears for her ribbon routine is heavily based on Elsa's dress from Frozen (2013), and she also uses "Let It Go" for her music. | |
