Steps of a Hero is a Legend of Zelda fanfic by Black Neko 06.The story is an alternate universe fic set before in the Breath of the Wild era, focusing on pre-Calamity Hyrule.Its focuses on a Zonai child named Rayco, who awakens from stasis likely under mysterious conditions centuries if not thousands of years after their species has been rendered extinct. Now in the modern-day rule, they find their way out of what is implied to be the Lost Woods, running into the Satori, the Lord of the Mountain, as he is known to the Hylians. Satori brings the child to a Woodland stable, where they assume Rayco is a silver bouklin and throw rocks at him and Satori, inciting Satori to run off. From there, Satori stops at the Zora river i within the presence of a Zora name Seggin. During their encounter, a lightning bolt in hte distance spooks Satori into bucking off Rayco into the river and running off. Seggin saves Rayco and brings him to the Zora domain, where he starts living amongst the Zora tribe and learning their customs.However, all is not well in Hryrule; Satori's wrath against the Hlian population incites the increasingly paranoid and reactionary king of Hyrule to take extreme measures, such as cutting down trees. This chain of events slowly causes the Hylian population to become increasingly militant and borderline xenophobic. Adaptational Villainy: King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule gets hit with this hard. Whereas in Breath of the Wild he was a bit of an *Abusive Parent to Zelda for putting a ton of pressure on her to figure out her sealing ability, it was only because her powers were vital to saving Hyrule from the incoming Calamity; overall he was a good king who cared about his people and only wanted to protect them and even intended to stop putting pressure on Zelda before hte Calamity rolled around. Here, he is a reactionary, paranoid pseudo-tyrant who strong arms and threatens his allies to stay in line with the military blockade, destroys much of the natural environment in Hyrule (albeit to combat Satori and other nature spirit's attacks on his country), intends to raid the Gerudo's mine by force, and does things like impose heavy taxe's on the Gerudo just because Ubrbosa made a slight comment criticize his paranoia. The king of the Zora even states that King Rhoam likely retaliates with military threats or attacks if the Zora dares cross their blockade, as King Rhoam pyramidally perceives damn near anything that defies or questions him as a threat. It's played with the Hylians as a whole. While in canon, they are primarily reasonable overall, besides a few jerks among their population, where most of the population seen is becoming increasingly xenophobic and militant, coldly dismissing a Goron traveler name Strade and refusing to let him into any of their towns. Their soldiers and civilians attack a child-like Rayco on sight simply because they don't know what species Rayco is, thinking Rayco is a monster. It's even implied that they might have bastardized the Zonai's history, as it's stated Zonai were described by Hylians as barbaric and war-like. That being said, its made clear that they were not always like this and were far more reasonable in the recent past to the other races. Much of their current xenophobia and paranoia is due to Satori's implied *Disproportionate Retribution from being pelted with rocks; as its stated in chapter 8, animals are going berserk, trees are being grown in unnatural rates to destroy towns and buildings, and even the tree's themselves are getting up to attack people (like the mimics in Tears of the Kingdom) So its not too unreasonable that the country going into turmoil and chaos would cause people to become a bit paranoid. | |

Disproportionate Retribution: Heavily implied to be the courier of Satori, seeing as he is a nature spirit. For being pelted by a few people with rocks at the Woodland stable, he seems to have caused mass destruction and chaos across Hyrule, with every type of animal going berserk and attacking people, trees spawning like mad to destroy whole towns, and even the tree's themselves getting up to attack people. It's stated in Chapter 8 that it's believed to be Satori who is doing this in anger, and it made clear it's a country-wide problem, despite the fact it was only a small group of people who tossed rocks at him and Rayco. | |

That being said, from what little is shown of Zelda in chapter 18, it is apparent Rhoam is at least treated even better than he did in canon. Given the fact that she is seen to be happily going around the square of castle town along with her guards and is a borderline Disney princess in terms of innocence and bubbly personality, it is apparent that Rhoam is not putting the kind of pressure on her now that he did in canon. | |

Everyone Has Standards: It's mentioned in chapter 16 that the Hylians, despite everything going on, would never sit ideally by if a child went missing and would gladly help if asked. Sadly, their population is paranoid by this point, and the child, Rayco, happens to be of an unknown species (Zonai) that the Hylians have rejoined as a monster and attacked before. It's why the Zora king has not simply asked them for help in finding Rayco after he ends up missing from the domain, as well as he fact that any armed search party of Zora crossing the border by this point would be perceived as a threat by King Rhoam. | |
