The above also leads to Mayor Bourgeois being taken to task for how he coddled Chloé and shielded her from the consequences of her actions for so long, with his hotel being boycotted and his political opponents leading calls for a recall. Then he attempts to skip town and abandon his daughter, but is caught, losing whatever remained of his reputation in the process. On top of this, Chloé's exposure also triggers an investigation into Francoise Dupont that leaves both Principal Damocles and Ms. Bustier facing critical review. Ultimately, Principal Damocles is fired, while Ms. Bustier gets one last chance to prove herself. The new Ladybug is also much firmer with Chat Noir, repeatedly taking him to task for his Skewed Priorities and sexual harassment of her. His refusal to stop leads to him losing the Black Cat Ring, with Ladybug publicly declaring that Chat Noir wasn't interested in helping her expose Shadow Moth's true identity. Gabriel's reputation tanks after he publicly transforms into Shadow Moth. Then there's Future!Alix, who displays absolutely No Sympathy for any of Hawk/Shadow Moth's countless victims and would happily let him become Monarch unchallenged because "that's how things are supposed to go". This callous attitude gets her stripped of the Rabbit Miraculous. Spiritual Antithesis: To its inspiration, Two Letters. Both stories revolve around the concept of Marinette quitting, with readers coming into the aftermath. In Two Letters, Marinette was embittered by her experiences to the point that she Stopped Caring, seeing all of Paris as Ungrateful Bastards who took her protection for granted. She even deliberately chose a Sketchy Successor, seeing that as karmic punishment. Here, by contrast, Marinette still cares deeply about keeping Paris safe, carefully selecting a Superior Successor out of the belief that they could do a much better job than her. This also applies to the replacement Ladybug. While the Ladybug in Two Letters was a narcissist who used her image to get what she wanted, the replacement is more focused on being a hero and saving lives. The only real flaws she has are her drastic (but still very effective) methods of stopping people that get in her way like Shadow Moth, Chloé and Chat Noir. Of course, those people had their karma coming a long time, so it's hard to really feel bad for them, which is why the new Ladybug's willingness to use these tactics is what makes her border very slightly on being a Knight Templar. While those who opposed Marinette's decision to quit in Two Letters were being Jerkasses about it, they at least had a point that her successor was causing problems and needed to be stopped. By contrast, the people who want to undermine and undo Marinette's choice here are shown to be acting purely out of selfish self-interest, only caring about themselves and their own personal gain regardless of the improvements made. A Running Theme in Two Letters is the lack of learning. Most of the major characters show no signs of addressing any of their Fatal Flaws; even when it's directly spelled out how they caused her retirement, they continue insisting that the original Ladybug needs to return and solve all their problems for them without so much as a glimmer of self-reflection. Weight Off Your Shoulder, by contrast, has several characters go through Jerkass and Heel Realizations, recognizing their mistakes and resolving to change for the better, while still accepting that the consequences of their actions won't magically go away. Fittingly, the biggest exception to this is Future!Alix, who created the Canon timeline by trying to force Marinette and Adrien to become a couple without either going through any of the development necessary to make that relationship work. | |

Even after losing all her memories of being Ladybug, Marinette continues to assume the worst of herself, believing that she must have been an utter failure as a hero who constantly screwed up. Chapter Eleven includes a scene that further deconstructs the idea that only Marinette needs to learn from her experiences. As a direct result of this, the Adrien shown in the Bad Future has remained completely stagnant, still expecting Marinette to handle everything for them while offering nothing in return. This results in their divorce, with Marinette finally recognizing that she can't keep making excuses for and enabling him anymore. The new Ladybug turns out to be Sentibug brought back via time travel showing how the only way a teen girl could ever be an ideal heroine like Tikki and the show tried to make Marinette is if she had literally no life outside of heroism. It also picks apart the presumption that The Good Guys Always Win through Adrien. Since he naively believes this to be the case, he sees nothing wrong with joking around as Chat Noir — after all, their victory is guaranteed, even if he gets taken out of the fight through his carelessness or recklessness. Once he finally grasps that isn't always the case, he finally realizes how much pressure he was putting on Ladybug to pick up his slack. Earn Your Happy Ending: Ultimately, things turn out much better for Marinette and her friends. Even Bridgette, the former Sentibug, gets to live a normal life alongside Marinette as her sister and having been adopted by her parents, with them splitting the duty of being Ladybug — and Bridgette finds herself a girlfriend as well. This also applies to the alternate timelines/Bad Futures; as it turns out, Adrien manages to do this in the one where he and Marinette divorced, as they actually learn from the experience and grow enough to handle the Awful Truth about his father being Hawk Moth. This directly contrasts with several universes where they don't go through that Character Development and end up hit by Laser-Guided Karma instead. | |
