Fighting with My Family is a dramedy bio film, directed by Stephen Merchant and produced by Dwayne Johnson. It tackles the subject of Professional Wrestling.Based off the 2012 documentary of the same name, the film follows the Bevis family. Well they prefer to be known as the Knights. They are a wrestling family - of parents Patrick and Julia (ring names Ricky and Saraya respectively), brother Zak and daughter Saraya. The latter is best known as Paige. Both Saraya and Zak try out for WWE. Guess which one makes it.The film stars Florence Pugh in the lead role, Jack Lowden as Zak, Nick Frost and Lena Headey as their parents, Vince Vaughn as developmental trainer Hutch Morgan, Dwayne Johnson as himself, and actual pro wrestler and actress Thea Trinidad as A.J. Lee.

No Celebrities Were Harmed: A lot of WWE talents during Paige's time in developmental are featured as side characters without actually being named, specifically Summer Rae, Sofia Cortez, Kelly Kelly, Eve Torres, Alexa Bliss, and Pete Dunne. British talents Jodie Fleisch and Kip Sabian also feature as un-named Performance Center trainers.

Historical Villain Downgrade
Fighting with My Family / int_18baa751 | comment |
Historical Villain Downgrade: The film actually tones down how Paige was treated when she first arrived at developmental. She's shown to be self-absorbed and Innocently Insensitive - alienating some of her contemporaries until they become Fire-Forged Friends. In real life she was bullied to the degree that her things were thrown out of the locker room, and Summer Rae was literally her Only Friend. Also toned down is the infamously rough Knight family way of training wrestlers, and the family's attitude to such. Aside from reports from former trainees including homophobic abuse, and borderline assault during matches, they also trained Paige so roughly that she had to be re-taught by NXT to not be so rough on the other girls.

Fighting with My Family / int_2003678f | comment |
Adaptational Skimpiness: The film's version of A.J. Lee has wrestling gear that includes a Cleavage Window and exposes her shoulders. The most amount of skin the real AJ showed were her legs and her midriff, and they were never emphasized. note Word of God says this was done to visually contrast Paige and AJ, as the real AJ had an "edgy outsider look" that isn't so different from Paige, which would've downplayed or outright diminished the movie's narrative of Paige being an "outcast"

Fighting with My Family / int_580be152 | comment |
Adaptational Modesty: Subverted by A.J. Lee. In the film, she’s wearing a robe over her wrestling gear which consists of short shorts and a midriff revealing top. The real AJ wore similar gear but never wore robes in her entrances during her WWE career. Also, the movie AJ wears a more revealing top. Paige herself in the movie tends to wear full sized t-shirts, which contrasts her significantly with all of the other female wrestlers in bikinis, while the real Paige tended to wear similar attire just in black and purple. Even in her climactic match against AJ, Paige wears a black corset and short shorts. note Likely reason is that it would be difficult for the actress to get in the same shape as all the professional stuntmen and models around her, and it would help hide the use of a Stunt Double.

Fighting with My Family / int_77cd64fa | comment |
Abled in the Adaptation: The documentary the film is based on shows Zak getting his knee injured weeks before Saraya leaves for Florida. The film omits the Game-Breaking Injury. Saraya/Paige was diagnosed with Scoliosis during her time training with the WWE, after a trainer noticed that her back didn't "look right", likely the result of wrestling from such a young age. This is completely omitted from the film entirely, and no mention of her back problems is made.

Composite Character: Vince Vaughn's character Hutch Morgan; He is a combination of many different trainers working in WWE developmental. His Drill Sergeant Nasty persona is clearly based off Bill DeMott. Additional trainers at the time Paige was in developmental included Dusty Rhodes and Sara Amato. He also mentioned to have fought The Rock in a Hell in a Cell match, whom threw him from the top of the cell. The Rock only competed once (Armageddon 2000) inside said structure, meaning Hutch is also taking the places of Kurt Angle, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Triple H, and Rikishi. Also the throwing from the top of the cell happened in a much earlier time (King of the Ring 1998) and between two different wrestlers, thus the film also has Hutch absorbing Mick Foley's history (as the one thrown) as well as fusing The Rock and The Undertaker's (as the throwers). Paige's three contemporaries in her time in developmental; Jeri-Lynn has the wrestling gear (pre-2015 Face–Heel Turn, at least) and cheerleading background of Alexa Bliss. But having the most interactions with Saraya, she is the film's closest counterpart to Summer Rae (who was Saraya's first friend). Maddison is Saraya's Tag Team partner much like Sofia Cortez was, but she has the wrestling gear and modelling background of Eve Torres. Perhaps not coincidentally, Maddison and the two wrestlers mentioned are all Hispanics. Kirsten's overall appearance invokes Summer Rae more than Jeri-Lynn does, but she is wearing Kelly Kelly's wrestling gear. She also seems to be based on Emma, Saraya's other blonde friend and contemporary after Summer Rae. They also took the places of Summer Rae, Emma, and Alicia Fox as the ones who congratulated Paige after her debut match.

Happily Ever Before: The film's epilogue doesn't state that Paige had to retire at the age of twenty-five due to injuries finally catching up with her, nor the controversies she got herself into prior to that.PostscriptShe would come out of retirement at age 30 in late 2022 in AEW as Saraya.

Adaptation Origin Connection: Wrestlers wearing the wrestling gears of Kelly Kelly, Eve Torres, and Alexa Bliss are contemporaries of Paige in the film. In real life, the first two were on the main roster and were on their way out of the company by the time Paige debuted whereas the latter only had her televised debut match when Paige already moved to the main roster.

One-Steve Limit: The reason why Saraya drops her Britani Knight ring name is because she was told WWE already has a Britani. Also worth mentioning is that her mother's ring name is Sweet Saraya.

Unkempt Beauty: Played with, Saraya feels very out of place compared to the professional models and cheerleaders she's competing against. She decides to give herself a makeover with platinum blonde hair and a spray tan, which doesn't go over well, and she goes back to her (relative) natural look when she gets a new resolve to Be Yourself.

Historical Beauty Update
Fighting with My Family / int_f740a274 | comment |
Historical Beauty Update: Even with the make-up on, Lena Headey is a lot more conventionally attractive than the real Julia/Sweet Saraya. Jack Lowden is a bit more of a Pretty Boy than Zak. He's also in much better shape than the real guy too. The documentary the film adapts depicts Zak being told that his physique is one of the reasons he's not signed. In the film he's just as good as the rest of them. Florence Pugh herself is an aversion. The documentary the film is adapted from has a whole section on Saraya's beauty, and how marketable she is. In fact the film almost downplays her beauty, emphasizing how out of place she feels against more glamorous girls.

The film actually tones down how Paige was treated when she first arrived at developmental. She's shown to be self-absorbed and Innocently Insensitive - alienating some of her contemporaries until they become Fire-Forged Friends. In real life she was bullied to the degree that her things were thrown out of the locker room, and Summer Rae was literally her Only Friend.
