Gaav ("The Cow"), is a 1969 film from Iran directed by Dariush Mehrjui.The entire film takes place in a tiny remote village that lacks electricity or running water. Mash Hassan, a middle-aged man, is the owner of the only cow in the little village. As such, he is a man of some importance, as all the other villagers (it looks like there can't be more than 100, and maybe less) come to him for milk. Mash Hassan clearly loves his cow, cooing gently to it when he takes it down to the pond for a wash, and buying little decorative headdresses for the cow to wear.One day, when Mash Hassan is out of town, the cow dies. The villagers, and their unofficial leader Mash Islam, panic at the prospect of telling Mash Hassan that his cow is dead. They decide to cushion the blow by telling him that the cow ran away. It doesn't work, and Mash Hassan, faced with the loss of the only thing that gives his life meaning (and that includes his wife), has a breakdown. | |
