Hemingway & Gellhorn | comment |
Hemingway & Gellhorn is a 2012 film from HBO following the tumultuous romance between Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman).Gellhorn and Hemingway meet by chance in a bar in Key West. Intrigued by the young woman, Hemingway invites her to his home where his friends have gathered to screen an unfinished movie about The Spanish Civil War. Gellhorn becomes impassioned with the movement and signs up to leave for the front the next day. Hemingway (who had been content to fish, fight and drink in comfort) is compelled to follow himself. Once there, they begin one of the most bizarre and eventful love stories ever lived.

Artistic License – History
Hemingway & Gellhorn / int_56515a39 | comment |
Artistic License – History Paco is loosely based on the real life José Robles Pazos, who was John Dos Passos' friend, and was executed as a traitor by the Republic, though the veracity of the charges are doubtful. The real life Pazos was a writer and professor who worked as a translator during the war. Though he held a rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, he never led troops in the field as Paco does. Early in the film, Gellhorn travels on a train with two young men going to join the International Brigades. The American, 'Brooklyn,' says "we're meeting our battalion in Madrid." Historically, foreign volunteers went first to the International Brigades depot in Albacete, some distance from Madrid, for training and equipment. In the film, Capa snaps his famous photograph of "the Falling Soldier" in front of Hemingway and Gellhorn. In reality, the picture, whose authenticity remains controversial to this day, was taken in September 1936. Hemingway and Gellhorn only arrived in Spain in 1937
