Dub-Induced Plotline Change: There has been some criticism of the Miramax release of the film for its mistranslation of one of the central ideas in the film, "tian xia" (天下), which literally means "All Under Heaven" but is translated as "Our Land." The Emperor was considered the Son of Heaven, ruler of the whole Earth - of which China was the very center. All foreign rulers were, from the Chinese perspective, vassals. Even in places where the Emperor's political authority did not reach or was not recognized, he was still the rightful lord. Therefore in historical contexts when Chinese speak of "Tian Xia", they basically mean "China" - and indeed "Tian Xia" is often translated simply as that. The phrase "All Under Heaven" could sound threatening to westerners, as if China has pretensions on the entire world. While at the time theoretically it did, it was more in the vein of the Chinese emperor acting as a benevolent "father" to all mankind, which while condescending isn't quite the threat of brutal military conquest it may first seem. Indeed their arrogance actually put the breaks on it. They considered China was already the greatest civilization that ever existed. The territory of insignificant foreigners would add nothing to it. (Although as the Chinese and Japanese would later show, the concept didn't necessarily exclude foreign conquest either.) "Tian Xia" is philosophical as much as political, and is so different from modern concepts that it's easily misunderstood. Rather than try to explain this particular strain of Chinese political and philosophical thought (impossible to do within the confines of the film), or risk being misunderstood, they decided to translate it in a way that more or less gets across what Chinese mean by "Tian Xia". During his fight with Long Sky, Nameless addresses the old blind musician as "sir" in the Miramax translation, while on the import DVDs, Nameless calls him "old man." Actually, Nameless said "lao xiansheng" (�先生), which means something along the lines of "old gentleman." "Lao" means old, and "xiansheng" is a polite way of addressing men, similar to "sir" or "mister" in English. Broken Sword and Flying Snow use the aliases Highcliff and Springbrook, respectively, while hiding in the calligraphy school. However, there is no mention of this in the English dub or Miramax English subtitles. During the famous scene in which the Qin army barrage the calligraphy school with arrows, the soldiers' cries were changed from "hail" to "storm" in the Miramax release to avoid a Nazi connotation. In the English versions of the film, once it was revealed that Nameless can non-fatally stab people so that they look like they are slain, we never go back and find out what happened to Long Sky, who isn't dead and has recovered from his wounds. In the original Chinese version, the closing sequence reveals that Sky decided to abandon martial arts in honor of the way Nameless and Broken Sword gave their lives. | |
