Weary River is a 1929 film directed by Frank Lloyd.Jerry Larrabee (Richard Barthelmess) is a gangster and bootlegger, living the high life along with his sexy blonde girlfriend Alice (Betty Compson). Jerry's high life comes to a sudden end when he is arrested for complicity in a gangland shootout that injured an innocent bystander. Jerry is quite surprised when his arrest leads to a conviction and a prison sentence.Jerry goes to jail, but the warden sees something in him. As it happens, Jerry has a talent for music. The warden encourages him, and Jerry, still in prison, winds up writing a hit song called "Weary River". Jerry gets early parole and starts a new career as a vaudeville performer. But will he be able to stay clean, or will he fall back into a life of crime?

Surprisingly Happy Ending: Jerry takes up the challenge from rival gangster Spadoni. He tells Alice that they'll get married tomorrow, after his showdown. It seems like the film is headed towards a Downer Ending in which Jerry will be killed in a shootout with Spandoni—but then the timely arrival of the warden means that not only does Jerry live, he doesn't even go back to jail. Jerry stays free and gets back with Alice.

Frame-Up: It turns out Jerry wasn't involved at all in the shooting that sent him to prison. In fact Spadoni, his rival, paid a man to take a bullet in the arm and claim that Jerry's goons were responsible.

Uncle Tomfoolery: A little racist humor with the elevator operator in Jerry's building, a black man. He stares at Jerry and the cops, bugging his eyes out ridiculously. Jerry addresses the operator, clearly older than he is, as "kid", and the racist cops call the elevator operator "boy."
