What's Love Got to Do with It is a 1993 Biopic, based on the 1986 autobiography of Tina Turner. The main stars were Angela Bassett, Rae'Ven Larrymore Kelly, and Laurence Fishburne. The film was directed by Brian Gibson. The film covers the life of Tina. She's first seen as little Anna Mae Bullock (Kelly), a child born and raised in Tennessee. Then teenage Anna Mae (Bassett) moves in with her mother Zelma Currie-Bullock (Jenifer Lewis) and older sister Alline (Phyllis Yvonne Stickney) in St. Louis. Her sister introduces her to the nightclub scene, where Anna Mae meets musician Ike Turner (Fishburne). She at first works as Ike's vocalist before becoming his partner "Tina" and then his wife. The film goes on to examine both their music careers and turbulent personal lives through several decades as Ike becomes increasingly unstable and abusive. Eventually, she leaves him (they separated in 1976, and the divorce followed in 1978), and goes solo in the music world to great success. Not to be confused with the British Rom Com of the same name.

Control Freak: Ike dominates everything around him, not just his wife, but also his band, and doesn't like anybody telling him what to do. He even has the gall to tell a judge not to instruct him in divorce court.

Ike's own abusive behavior stems from the trauma of watching, at age 6, his father's death from wounds suffered in a fight over a woman. He also says that the smell of hospitals are a particular trigger for him.

Parental Abandonment: Both parents abandon Anna Mae for years. Zelda invites a teenaged Anna Mae to move in with her. And makes clear she doesn't want criticism for the abandonment: "Now, don't think you're going to come live in my house and make me feel bad." Being jilted, Lorraine disowns her two sons with Ike and leaves them at his and Tina's home.

Adapted Out: Raymond Hill, who was Craig Turner's biological father, is not portrayed in the film. In fact, Craig is depicted as Ike and Tina's first of two sons together. In real life they only had one child together, Ronnie, who was given an Age Lift in the film to make him several years younger than his brothers. Tina's relationship with Hill was likely cut out in the interest of time.

Gory Discretion Shot: Painfully subverted with some of Ike's abuse on Tina. Played straight after Tina finally snaps and mauls him in a limo, the shot cuts to outside, only hearing a loud pained scream from Ike. We next see them storm out of the car, both pretty bloodied and shaken. Lorraine's suicide attempt. Only the sounds of the gun going off and her sobbing.

Artistic License – History
What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) / int_56515a39
comment
Artistic License – History: Enough that the movie's Wikipedia article has a section dedicated to listing various inaccuracies. Unlike what the movie shows, Ike Turner never called Anna Mae by her given name; his preferred names for her were "Ann" and "Bo" (an abbreviation of her surname "Bullock"). On a similar note, her family and friends continued to call her by variations of her real name even after "Tina" became her stage name. Though the movie says otherwise, Ike didn't sing or play guitar on the recording of "Rocket 88". He wrote the song and played piano on the record. Kings of Rhythm saxophonist Jackie Brenston was the vocalist. Similarly, when Anna Mae sang her original rendition of "You Know I Love You", Ike played the organ. The movie has him playing the guitar. While the movie portrays "Tina's Wish" as the first song Anna Mae records, the first song she recorded was actually "Boxtop". Lorraine Taylor didn't drop her children with Ike off at his house with Tina as depicted in the movie. In reality, Ike went to St. Louis and brought the kids back with him to Los Angeles after Lorraine told him she was leaving him. The movie shows Ike and Anna Mae having sex on the night Lorraine shot herself. In reality, Lorraine attempted suicide in 1958, while Ike and Anna Mae's relationship didn't get romantic until 1960; Lorraine believed the two were having an affair after Anna Mae got pregnant with her first child, but their relationship was platonic at the time. It's implied in the movie that Ike was the biological father of Tina's oldest son, Craig Raymond. Craig's biological father was actually a saxophonist named Raymond Hill and Ike adopted him. Tina only had one biological child with Ike, Ronald "Ronnie" Renelle. One scene set in 1960 has a theater marquee advertising, along with Ike and Turner, Otis Redding and Martha and the Vandellas. In reality, Martha and the Vandellas were known as The Del-Phis until 1961, and Otis Redding didn't release his first solo single until 1962. While the movie has Ike and his entourage sneaking Tina out of the hospital after she gives birth to their son Ronnie so they can get married, Ike wasn't actually there for Ronnie's birth because he had to attend a court hearing in another state and the two didn't marry until two years after their son was born. Anna Mae learns of her name change to Tina Turner after their debut single "A Fool in Love" is played on radio in the hospital where she had given birth. In reality, the song was released months before Ronnie was born. Unlike what the movie shows, Ike and Tina didn't open for the Rolling Stones in 1968, for the simple reason that the Stones didn't have any concerts that year; they did open for them in their 1966 British and 1969 American tours, however. There's no way Ike and Tina could have sung "Proud Mary" in 1968, since it was a cover of a Credence Clearwater Revival song released in 1969, a year later. Their cover version came out in 1971. Contrary to what the movie depicts, there's no indication that Ike ever actually raped Tina. Tina claimed that Ike would sometimes have sex with her after hitting her, but she never accused him of raping her, and Ike maintained that he never raped Tina. "Nutbush City Limits" was actually recorded at the Bolic Sound studio, not Ike and Tina's home. Tina's suicide attempt is shown to happen in 1974. In reality, it happened in 1968. Ike threatening to kill Tina in the ambulance scene is based on a joke Tina later told; Tina was unconscious and didn't know what she actually said, while Ike insists he just scolded Tina to try and motivate her to fight for her life. The scene where Ike tries to scare Tina with a gun at the Ritz Theatre is a fabrication. Ike allegedly threatened to hire a hitman, but he never threatened to kill her in person. Tina's 1983 performance at the Ritz is said to be her first; in reality, she'd already performed there before in 1981. She also didn't sing "What's Love Got to Do with It" at the Ritz; the song was written while she was with Capitol Records, and they didn't sign her until after she sang at the Ritz in '83 (in fact, her performance there was what got them to offer her a contract). A title card at the end implies Private Dancer was Tina's first solo album. It was actually her fifth.

Paper Tiger: Ike is portrayed as nightmarish in his abuse to Tina, though the first time she snaps and retaliates, he gets ripped to shreds. No longer dominant over Tina, his character degenerates largely into a spineless bully making empty threats for most of the remainder of the film, though he has no qualms abusing their son and threatening Tina with a gun at hand.

Mood Whiplash: An in-universe example. In a diner, Ike tells Tina to eat some cake, not too bad considering his character. But Tina refuses, saying that it's too early, and that Ike's high (and possibly drunk too). Then he gets forceful and smashes a slice in her face, and she angrily splashes her drink on her stoned husband, who's clearly making a scene. Ike gets up to beat her, but Jackie, her backup singer, stands up as well, and bears the brunt of Ike's violent rage, as he calls her out in front of the other customers in the diner for not "minding your damn business." Jackie storms out and urges Tina to leave before he kills her. Then, as if nothing ever happened there, he exclaims "Dayum, this cake good!", again offering some to Tina. That last line from Ike just makes the scene so outrageously over-the-top that it's hard not to laugh. Several throughout the movie, with one infamous moment involving a fun pool scene go from fun to down-right terrifying when Ike starts to abuse her.

Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While it's clear that Ike is grappling with some demons, he's also shown to take no personal responsibility for his behavior, and the abject cruelty he inflicts on Tina is nothing more than a toxic combination of ego and jealousy. While it's understandable why Anna Mae's mother would leave so abruptly. To escape a life of domestic abuse. It doesn't justify her abandoning her child too. Her mother lampshades this when reunited with Tina as a teenager.

Composite Character: Frost (Chi McBride) is a composite of several members of Ike and Tina's backing band. Likewise, Jackie (Vanessa Bell Calloway) is a composite of various backup singers (the Ikettes) and Tina's real-life friend who introduced her to Buddhism.

An in-universe example.

Groin Attack: In the middle of another beating from Ike, Tina punches him off her. Despite a brief shocked pause, he quickly turns on her again, this time earning a very painful kick in the groin.

Jerkass: Ike's increasingly abusive and envious treatment of Tina in the film borders an out and out Sanity Slippage. Naturally, the real life counterpart wasn't too happy about his portrayal.

A Minor Kidroduction: The first few minutes of the film delves into Tina Turner's formative years in 1949 ab-libbing lyrics to "This Little Light of Mine" only to be scolded by the choir director and returning home to find her mother walking out on her and her father and taking her older sister leaving her behind.

Historical Beauty Update: Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett are both more attractive (and in Bassett's case, more muscular) than the real Ike and Tina.
