A popular Let's Player on the Something Awful forums due to putting insane amounts of time and effort into each LP, Chip Cheezum has (at this time of writing) completed 31 Let's Plays, all of them currently or soon to be featured on the LP Archive. Primarily accompanied in his LPs by General Ironicus, he has also collaborated with other fellow goons such as VoidBurger, SnarkCookie, A Wooden Palisade and Ambisagrus, as well as comic artist KC Green. He also occasionally uploads Retsupurae videos to his YouTube account, though more recently the duo has focused more on old gaming-related commercials rather than bad Let's Plays, longplays, or any of the sort of shift the actual Retsupurae account experienced. He and General Ironicus have their own site, where all of their LPs have been posted. Doesn't seem to have a high opinion of those who add quotes on this page.

Non Sequitur: Chip and his co-commentators tend to start new discussions in the middle of cutscenes. Does This Remind You of Anything?
Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_14ed6ab7 | comment |
Does This Remind You of Anything?: At the end of the Metal Gear Solid V LP, Chip and Ironicus discuss the various fan conspiracy theories that Death Stranding was a Metal Gear game in disguise. Chip notes that, as the game approached its release date and it became clear that Death Stranding would be its own IP with no connection to Kojima's prior work, one group of theorists called it quits, and the other dug in harder than ever. Ironicus immediately makes a comparison to the schism among Millerite Christians after the Great Disappointment of 1844.

Genre Shift: Rez and Condemned: Criminal Origins were done by Chip alone, with subtitles instead of voice commentary (except in the eighth video for the latter). The first run through Zone of the Enders and Bastion were also solo, though he still actually talked. Not to mention any time he switches to a Cabela's hunting game mid-LP, most recently in the 'Trials' in the middle of Uncharted 2. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, after the first mission, is a literal co-op LP together with snarkcookie.

The Cameo: In the original No More Heroes LP, slowbeef and Diabetus do "guest commentary" (actually unrelated Skype conversations with Chip about, respectively, the thread for the LP and books) for the Bitter Mode runs of Holly Summers and Speed Buster. Also, Edwyn Tiong (aka Dan McNeely, aka Legend) ending The You Testament LP with a dramatic reading of two of MDickie's (incredibly egotistical) journal entries. Metal Gear Solid was done by Chip and VoidBurger, but during the Psycho Mantis fight General Ironicus is suddenly there after the first blackout. VoidBurger returns after a third blackout. "The End" of Metal Gear Solid 2 features readings of some of Hideo Kojima's tweets by other Something Awful regulars, including Voidburger, Baldurk, Blister, Ferr, and, again, slowbeef and Diabetus.

The Scrappy | |
Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_2b7ec38e | comment |
The Scrappy: invoked In The Wonderful 101, Ironicus takes an instant dislike to Professor Shirogane. The duo also develops a dislike of Luka as the game carries on. Chip seems to really hate Naomi Hunter, especially in Metal Gear Solid 4, to the point that when the first boss in the game disguises herself as Naomi, Chip responds by shooting her with an RPG. Iwazaru, to the point where Chip flat-out refuses to transcribe most of what he says or even talk to him unless absolutely necessary about halfway through the LP. He does admit however that Iwazaru starts making up for being so annoying by actively helping collect the color samples in the "Alter Ego" chapter. They seem to hate all the Remnant Psyches except for Travis and Yoo-Hyun, as they see them as entertaining in delivering exposition. They also have a hate for most of the conversation transcript NPCs in Watch_Dogs, due to most of them being massive assholes. Horacio the manatee from Shamu's Deep Sea Adventure during Gextra Life 2017, due to him not letting Ironicus play the game. Chip and Ironicus are not sympathetic to the leaders of Wall Market at all. Being complicit in Don Corneo's human trafficking scheme tends to have that effect.

Hidden Depths: It usually doesn't show up much in their Let's Plays or RPs but Ironicus has more than a little knowledge of sociology, as the 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand LP showed. He also apparently enjoys poetry. According to an offhand joke in Slowbeef's Let's Play of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Ironicus is a sociology major. He also shows off an impressive knowledge of James Bond trivia for Killer7. In the Uncharted LP, Ironicus and Chip spend about a minute discussing which of several ice-skating techniques a particular ragdoll death animation resembled more. Ironicus is also a huge history buff, to the point that he started a history podcast with his wife in 2016.

Kindhearted Cat Lover: Chip owns a couple of cats. One of them likes to jump on his desk while he's recording. He also has at least one dog, offhandedly mentioning so while Ironicus discusses a breed of dog he'd like to own in the first No More Heroes, and in the 19th video of No More Heroes 2, noting how his dad has to present the dog they do own to him whenever they leave so said dog doesn't get lonely and think they've abandoned him. And as of Metal Gear Solid V, Ironicus owns a dog as well, which is never more clear than when she interrupts a discussion of D-Dog's abilities by loudly squeaking a toy into his mic for close to a minute.

He's also a massive Metal Gear fan.invoked The games that Chip chooses for his Let's Plays usually have an eccentric older male relative (typically a Cool and/or Creepy Uncle); in the absence of such, Chip and Ironicus will reinterpret another character to fit the mold. Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_74e2ef76 | comment |
Orphaned Punchline: A unique example, where in most cases due to commentary during cutscenes only being hearable on a second audio track or in an "uncut" version of a video, it's up to the viewer whether this trope is in effect or not. For instance, from Act 4 of Metal Gear Solid 4, during a cutscene in the offices where the Grey Fox fight took place in during MGS1, the duo start discussing the two MSX games in the series. Those watching the cut version miss the vast majority of this conversation because it's happening during a cutscene, so apparently apropos of nothing, Ironicus states right after returning to gameplay that "they can retcon everything in that game except for poisonous Zanzibar hamsters".

The ending of Metal Gear Solid 2, between the rest of the Cabela's 2010 demo and other SA regulars reading Hideo Kojima's tweets, had the duo reveal that they are the Patriots, and that the entire thread was part of the "T3 Plan" ("Terrible Thread Testing") to see just how bad an LP thread could possibly be. It Was His Sled
Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_8abd0e31 | comment |
It Was His Sledinvoked Discussed in relation to Final Fantasy VII Remake's treatment of Sephiroth. In the original, Sephiroth is barely mentioned until he kills President Shinra off-screen at a point in the story around where the first remake ends. In the remake, Sephiroth appears frequently throughout the story as Cloud's hallucinations, his murder of Shinra is on-screen, and Sephiroth is also the Final Boss. Ironicus argues that Sephiroth's slow-burn reveal from the original game is a trick that can't be pulled a second time, because he is a huge pop-culture icon that has eclipsed his own game, and arguably his franchise. Otherwise averted during the LP, as Chip does not discuss any plot points from the original until they become relevant in the remake, while asking those in the thread and YouTube comments to do the same.

Metal Gear Solid 2 had "Uncut" versions of the final few videos uploaded at a later date, which kept their commentary over cutscenes and Codec calls. Continuity Nod: In 'What If?' Mode of the Spider-Man LP, Scorpion and JJJ play Marco Polo, and Spider-Man says "Fish outta water!" Chip then gloats that there's something else to say in Marco Polo. Then, in part 6 of Uncharted 2, Chip triggers the Marco Polo event. When Drake gets out of the pool he says "Fish outta water!" Chip then gloats about it again. In the Trial #2 video during the Uncharted 2 LP, Ironicus advertises his new CD, using the picture that Chip had used to show him in the Message to Ironicus video of the No More Heroes LP. Early in the first Uncharted, Chip talks up one of the first deaths he leaves in the video due to the ragdoll physics making it uniquely amusing. Upon hearing that the death happens while he's clambering over low cover, Ironicus immediately assumes he will be clipping into the cover and spazzing out upon dying, like the first death left on-video in 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. The Stinger of killer7 has the reveal that the LP never happened, with Ironicus suggesting Chip see a psychiatrist. The stinger to Metal Gear Solid 3, their next LP, has Chip actually visiting said psychiatrist (played by Ironicus). In the introduction to Act 2 of Metal Gear Solid 4, as Snake talks about how the data recovered at the end of 2 is a "load of crap", Chip jokes that "fighting the President with cyber-octo-arms" (aka Solidus Snake) is perfectly normal in comparison to the twelve founders of an ongoing conspiracy having been dead for a hundred years. Ironicus then claims that that's as weird as having world policy decided by one school in Washington - as ended up being the case in killer7. In Uncharted 3 #14, during a cutscene, the duo start talking about Bear Grylls in their attempts to give Drake "survival tips", and then Chip notes how he once bought a Bear Grylls-branded survival knife that almost immediately broke. Ironicus asks him if it had matches in the grip, calling back to a radio conversation from Metal Gear Solid 3 where Sigint tried to give Snake a knife with matches in the grip, among other things, which Snake rejected because that made the knife too brittle for actual use. Metal Gear Rising #9-1 has a part early on where Jetstream Sam gives "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Raiden while he's restricted to a slow walk through an alleyway filled with monitors and holographic projectors for Sam to give the speech through. About halfway through, Ironicus wonders when Sam will start mentioning "the garden of madness" and giving Raiden his odds of surviving the next boss fight, much like the phone calls before every ranked assassin fight way back in No More Heroes.

This Is Gonna Suck: During the Rank 1 Bitter Mode fight in No More Heroes 2, Chip mentions that the fight footage was recorded around when he first got the game, roughly two full years prior. The reason? He started that fight on Bitter then, saw how incredibly hard it was going to be,*According to him, that fight took him 96 minutes, and he died 18 times during the course of it. and decided to record it right then and there just so he wouldn't have to play that fight on that difficulty again when he got to the inevitable LP.

Catchphrase Ironicus will often say "This is the best game" whenever something really neat happens. Chip says "STAR WARS!" so much during the Lego Star Wars LP that it constitutes as a temporary one, at least. Chip seems to like saying "There's a man" whenever he's pointing out an enemy that will become the center of amazing things. Ironicus is also quite fond of saying "The end, credits roll" when something ridiculous happens, or at points that'd make a good cutoff for a video. Heard a ridiculous amount during the mind boggling ending cutscenes of Metal Gear Solid 4.

"Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Done often at the end of games after the credits, with highly unlikely results for the characters, usually ending in a preview for the next LP. The very end of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand was a Metal Gear Solid 3-style timeline of future events involving the cast, ending with a "Les Fiddy Teribles" project producing clone sons of 50 Cent. All of this being a lead-up to the Metal Gear Solid 2 LP. At the very end of the Metal Gear Solid 4 LP, showing what happened to the cast after the end of the game. This one was more to disagree with the extended ending of the game. Nope, Snake really did commit suicide in the graveyard, honest!

Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_bef696dd | comment |
Mind Screw: Happens quite a few times throughout his Lets Plays, usually at the end of a game. To go along with the Psycho Mantis fight, Voidburger suddenly becomes Ironicus during the first Hideo Blackout. The second, Chip is now playing a hunting simulator as if it were a dad-themed RPG, while receiving Codec calls from himself trying to remember what he was actually supposed to be doing. The next video restores the game, and a third blackout in the midst of the boss fight brings back Voidburger. The "uncut" versions for the fourth and sixth videos of the Condemned LP add audio of, respectively, Ironicus reading bad fanfiction to friends and Chip and Ironicus trying to play Link's Crossbow Training together, both with (nearly-)unintelligible messages occasionally popping up. Between the seventh and eighth videos is also a video titled "House", consisting of a minute-long shot of a house while an unknown voice talks about how it "wants to meet you". The last video for the Duck Dynasty LP. It's extremely unsettling, showing the protagonist undergoing Body Horror while bringing in what may or may not be the apocalypse through the form of an old VHS tape.

Product Placement: Invoked by Chip at the beginning of the Uncharted 2 LP, trying to take advantage of blip.tv advertising money. This is followed by the second episode being littered with sudden, highly intrusive advertisements for various products and restaurants.

Running Gag | |
Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_f9f2c33 | comment |
Running Gag: Switching abruptly to a Cabela's hunting game and acting like nothing is unusual about this. Referencing Resident Evil 4 at least once per LP. Finally lampshaded by Ironicus in part 5 of Cabela's Dangerous Hunts. in Uncharted 2, Ironicus mispronouncing Lazarevic's name. After Drake and Sully come across an abandoned U-boat at the top of a very tall waterfall early in the first Uncharted, with a very flimsy and improbable explanation about flooding and heading upriver, Chip and Ironicus (the latter in particular) start referring to beached boats and other such things in impossible locations for the rest of the game and the next two as having "gone upriver". Every time a member of the B&B Corps shows up in a cutscene during Metal Gear Solid 4, Ironicus will say something to the effect of "You know what I don't like about Beauty and the Beast?" invoked Ever since their Let's Play of No More Heroes, every time Chip looks at the "hard" mode in a game includes a reference that "Many strong men await you". During killer7, voice clips of Travis from No More Heroes can occasionally be heard in the background when the killer7 Travis is talking. Chip's inability to hit weakpoints on elbows is a recurring thing as well. At one point he only manages to hit an enemy's elbow weak point on the first shot because it involved missing the elbow weak-point of the enemy he was actually aiming at. As well as making characters dance up and down the stairs in the Vinculum Gate. An example that only lasts one video: Senator Armstrong is a jerk. Chip and Ironicus getting more and more impressed with Alice in The Wonderful 101, to the point where by the last levels, they're sure that she competently participated in the previous Earth Defense War, while being a fetus. Chip's "Original Characters", which just amounts to poorly drawn picture or poorly edited pre-existing pictures, and they're always named "Hank." Appending "nice" whenever anybody - including the duo themselves - say "black site" in Metal Gear Solid V.

Fun with Subtitles: Since the Duck Dynasty game didn't have any subtitles, Chip had to add them in himself. He took to opportunity to make some extra jokes along with them.

Brick Joke | |
Chip Cheezum (Lets Play) / int_fe0330fb | comment |
Brick Joke: Plenty. Killer7 has two - the first being Ironicus's reference to RENT (which is alluded to in the credits for the LP), and the second being the doctor that Ironicus tells Chip to see, who appears in The Stinger for the Metal Gear Solid 3 LP. In the beginning of the MGS2 LP, Chip enters the player name as "Suck my dick." The moment when Raiden pulls out his dog tags to reveal his "name" in the ending makes the whole journey worthwhile. During the Spider-Man LP, the duo make mention of an Octocamo pattern in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots that makes Snake look exactly like The Shocker. It comes up again when they actually LP MGS4, being brought up in the second update. Said camo doesn't appear until fifteen updates later. The first thing to happen in the Kingdom Hearts LP is Chip throwing up a large disclaimer that the two of them have no obligation to play through the entire series, causing Ironicus to give a loud belly laugh. The last thing to happen in the playthrough is Chip sheepishly admitting that he's already finished recording and editing an LP of Chain of Memories, which makes Ironicus give a nearly identical laugh.

Shown Their Work: Frequently. For example, during Metal Gear Solid 4, Ironicus opined that it would be cooler to have the Octocamo suit capable of mimicking motion in real time, and Chip responds that Konami tried it and found it would take too much processing power. note Stealth Camo is usable by Snake in a New Game Plus, but it basically just turns his model to glass.
