Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Rein Shroud is a beast tamer, one with the ability to form contract with non-human creatures and gain their help. This did not sit well with the party he adventured with, led by the hero Arios, and they kicked him out for his perceived uselessness.Rein joins the Adventurer's Guild as a means to make money and, on his trial quest, comes across a girl being attacked by a monster. Rein intervenes, only to end up being saved by the girl instead. The girl, Kanade, is a member of the Tribe of Cat People, the rarest of the "Strongest Species" that possess great power. After hearing Rein's story, and out of gratitude for his trying to rescue her, Kanade offers to let Rein use his Beast Tamer powers to form a contract with her.In so doing, Rein adds Kanade's formidable physical abilities to his own and begins a journey that will see him forming bonds with other races.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl is an abbreviated title. The work's proper title is Yuusha Party wo Tsuihou Sareta Beast Tamer, Saikyou Shuzoku Nekomimi Shojo to Deau, which translates to The Beast Tamer Who was Kicked Out of the Hero Party Only to Meet the Strongest Cat-eared Girl. Defeat Means Friendship: When Rein and Kanade first meet Tania, she's hanging around a bridge challenging any adventurers who pass by to fights. Following her defeat she takes an interest in Rein and because of this, and thinking she can get more training by hanging around him and Kanade, asks to join the group and form a contract with Rein.

Pest Controller: While Rein is an all-purpose Beast Tamer who can tame anything from the tiniest insects to the Strongest Spieces, when in actual combat he relies on venomous animals in general, with insects being the most frequent. In two separate fights he uses a specific breed of bee and, when rounding up corrupt guardsmen into a trap, uses a swarm of butterflies with paralyzing poison scales to subdue them.

Verbal Tic: Like many a Cat Girl before and since, Kanade tends to pepper "Nyas" (Meows) into her speech, sometimes integrating them with actual words like "Nyaice" instead of "Nice" Luna tends to end sentences with "nanoda", or just "noda" for short. It's one of the things that sets her apart from her sister Sora, who is more of a Third-Person Person.

Walking the Earth: The Tribe of Cat People lives quietly deep in the mountains, but Kanade found this life tedious and uninteresting, prompting her to leave home and go on a journey, which is how she met Rein. The rule of the Dragon race is that when one turns fifteen, they go on a journey to train and become stronger. Tania is currently on that journey, though not particularly interested in the training aspect. This is why she opts to join Rein, as she's interested in him and assumes she'll get just as much training done by being with him and Kanade.

Curb-Stomp Battle | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_3d699462 | comment |
Curb-Stomp Battle: Chapters 21-24 feature a battle with Rein's and Arios's parties. Given that the Arios's Hero Party has been having trouble since they kicked out Rein, while Rein has contracted with and gained power from Kanade and Tania, the battle goes overwhelmingly in Rein's favor. The only one who struggles at all is Rein himself, but he still wins handily with his Beast Tamer skills on top of his power ups from Kanade and Tania. Kanade defeats the warrior Aggas with only half of her power, while Tania negates everything Rin and Mina, the party's two spellcasters, can throw at her then overwhelms them with a massive magical attack that turns out to be a bluff that makes them faint.

Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_48414e75 | comment |
The Beastmaster: Rein's primary skill. He can create "Provisional Contracts" with various animals to help him, and when he was with the hero party used this to great effect for support and scouting. When forming a more permanent contract with one of the Strongest Species, like Kanade or Tania, his own abilities are increased to match who he's contracted with, giving him Kanade's physical strength, Tania's magical power, and Sora and Luna's magical control. This is far above and beyond what a normal Beast Tamer is known to do, as they are limited to only a single animal at a time, period.

Power Copying | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_4c24a9ed | comment |
Later in the story, it is suggested by one of the Fairy twins that Rein may not have any upper limit to his potential growth. All mortals in the setting are subject to such a limit, a point at which they can become no stronger no matter what they do. The only known exception to this is the hero Arios, as he's descended from a prior hero who was giving the "Limit Breaker" ability by the gods. It is for this reason Arios is considered the only one potentially capable of fighting the Demon Lord. Sora theorizes that Rein's Power Copying may work in much the same way: Offering a way for him to become continually stronger with every contract he forms.

I Was Beaten by a Girl: After Tania joins Rein's group, Rein opts to keep her true identity as the one obstructing the bridge by challenging people to fights quiet so she won't be arrested and deported. This prompts Rein to ask Tania if she did anything to her previous challengers to keep quiet, since nobody else ever revealed her identity previously. Tania assures Rein she didn't, and Rein is dismayed to learn that it was most likely because, according to Tania, they were all depressed because they lost to a girl.

Unique Protagonist Asset
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_80d7308 | comment |
Unique Protagonist Asset: Beast Tamers are normally only able to control one single, normal animal at a time. Rein, however, is not only able to tame multiple animals at once, he can form contracts with the Strongest Species, humanoid races with incredible power. Doing so gives Rein their powers via Power Copying, such as Cat Girl Kanade's physical power and dragon girl Tania's magical power. It's implied that all Beast Tamers in Rein's hometown were just as capable, but his village was destroyed when Rein was twelve years old, leaving him the sole survivor. Later in the story, it is suggested by one of the Fairy twins that Rein may not have any upper limit to his potential growth. All mortals in the setting are subject to such a limit, a point at which they can become no stronger no matter what they do. Kung-Fu Wizard: The Dragon race is number two when it comes to magical power, second only to the Fairy race. Unlike the squishier Fairies, however, Dragons are just as capable physically. When Tania fights Rein and Kanade, she and Kanade are a match despite physical power being the Cat Peoples' specialty, and takes the advantage by having magic on top of that. I Thought Everyone Could Do That
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_88424df3 | comment |
I Thought Everyone Could Do That: Rein is oblivious to just how talented as a Beast Tamer he is, as he can contract with both the Strongest Species and multiple normal animals when normally a Beast Tamer is limited to only a single normal animal. This is due to having spent his childhood in a village full of Beast Tamers like himself before it was destroyed, and not really coming into contact with "normal" Beast Tamers since. It's not until Kanade points out just how impressive he is that Rein starts to realize it himself and begins to experiment with things he would not have tried before, such as trying to "overwrite" another Beast Tamer's contract to take control of a Behemoth. This goes to his previous team as well. After they kicked him out, thinking of him as dead weight, they were surprised to find out how weak Beast Tamers were compared to him. When they tried to get the other Beast Tamers to do even a fraction of what Rein used to do, the Beast Tamers think they are nuts for expecting that much.

Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_9a3b7208 | comment |
The Needs of the Many: When Luna was captured by the Shadow Knight, it told Sora it would only free her if Sora removed the barrier protecting the Fairy village. Sora initially sought help from her fellow Fairies to save her, but her village's chieftain refused, prioritizing the safety of the many within the barrier rather than the one who was captured due to leaving it. Sora can understand the reasoning, but can not forgive it. It is for this reason that, once the Shadow Knight is defeated by Rein's group and the sisters are reunited, they decide to leave the forest for a while, ultimately joining and contracting with Rein.

The Unchosen One | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_9f9ef70f | comment |
The Unchosen One: Discussed. After finishing Arios's request at the Lost Forest, the girls ask Rein to explain an earlier statement that Arios was the only one who could defeat the Demon Lord. Rein explains that Arios is descended from a hero who was given the power "Limit Breaker" by the gods. This allowed the Hero, and by extension Arios, to continue to get stronger and stronger, unhindered by the "Growth Limit" that all other mortal beings are subject to, and this is needed to match the Demon Lord. Upon hearing this, Sora suggests the possibility that Rein also has no Growth Limit, as his Power Copying makes him stronger with every contract he forms. This prompts Kanade to ask if this means Rein would be able to defeat the Demon Lord instead of the divinely chosen Hero. Rein is not against the idea, but is hesitant about the idea and asks to be able to give it some thought.

Entitled Bastard: A few. The Hero party in general, but especially Arios himself. After kicking Rein out of the party only to realize they needed him for an important quest, they discuss asking him nicely to help and then kick him out again. Except their idea of 'nice' is a Backhanded Apology and emotional blackmail and when called out on it, Arios steadfastly refuses to offer a decent apology or even basic respect to Rein or his companions, demanding instead that they cave to his whims as the chosen hero. Edgar Fromware, the son of the mayor of a town Rein and company stay at. He walks up to Rein, Sora, and Luna and, ignoring Rein, declares the two girls will be his women. When they refuse, he sets the town guards on the group to force them. When Rein proves too strong for the guards, he has them take two innocent women as hostages and threatens to kill them if Rein doesn't surrender Sora and Luna.

Chronic Hero Syndrome: Rein will put himself on the line to protect others, even knowing it won't be in his own interest to do so and even if he doesn't actually want to do it. This is demonstrated when Arios tries to recruit him for help with the Lost Forest despite having kicked him out of their party. Rein clearly doesn't want anything to do with them, but Arios's party is trying to stop a threat to the entire world, so Rein agrees. Within the Lost Forest itself, Rein offers to help Sora even though she's already given them what they came for and they have no other reason to remain. Tania tends to chide him as being "too good of a person" because of this, while Kanade realizes it's due to Rein's village being destroyed in his childhood. He doesn't want to see someone else suffer that same kind of tragedy.

Master Poisoner: A common tactic Rein uses is the contracting of poisonous creatures and using them to paralyze opponents. He has a thorough knowledge of which animals can do what, as he uses different poisonous beasts each time he uses this trick. Against Tania he used poisonous ravens he detected in the area, against the Jet-Black Fangs and Arios he used bees, and when rounding up corrupt guardsmen he incapacitated them by trapping them in an enclosed area into which he sent butterflies with paralyzing poison scales. In the last case Rein and company can watch from the area's upper floors because he's aware of the scales being heavier than air.

Excellent Judge of Character: Kanade towards Rein. Rein is a truly good person, but Kanade hadn't even known him a day before she was all but begging him to put her under a magical beast tamer contract and by the time they book a room at an inn, she trusts him enough to sleep in the same room (and even says she'd be fine sleeping in the same bed).

True Craftsman | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_c3a57274 | comment |
True Craftsman: Gantz Storf is a dwarven blacksmith and weapon shop owner in the town Rein lives in. By the time Rein meets him, he's reached a point where seeing his beloved creations be viewed as nothing more than "good weapons" has disheartened him, prompting him to put out worse products with short life cycles that look good for regular sale, and keep the quality and detailed masterpieces for customers who can spot the difference. This comes back to bite him, as the antagonists in his introductory arc are adventurers he sold his shoddy wares to trying to ruin him by sabotaging his source of the mythril used in his finer creations. Gantz realizes afterward that he was making a big mistake in evaluating his customers the way he had, and resolves to resume making all of his weapons with the heart and soul he had before.

Beyond the Impossible | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_cc6f4612 | comment |
Beyond the Impossible: It's stressed early on that Rein's abilities as a Beast Tamer are far above normal. Your average Beast Tamer can only form a contract with one creature at a time, where Rein can not only contract with members of the Strongest Species, he can do so with multiple members of the Strongest Species and contract with multiple normal animals besides. This proves an issue in Arios's attempts to replace Rein, due to no other Beast Tamer measuring up to his skill. Rein himself seems oblivious to his own increased aptitude until Kanade points it out, and what's known of his past suggests his now-destroyed hometown was home to Beast Tamers of similar ability to his own.

Backhanded Apology | |
Beast Tamer and the Cat Girl / int_e26465db | comment |
The Hero party in general, but especially Arios himself. After kicking Rein out of the party only to realize they needed him for an important quest, they discuss asking him nicely to help and then kick him out again. Except their idea of 'nice' is a Backhanded Apology and emotional blackmail and when called out on it, Arios steadfastly refuses to offer a decent apology or even basic respect to Rein or his companions, demanding instead that they cave to his whims as the chosen hero.

Deconstructed Character Archetype: The Chosen One. Because Arios is the descendant of the divine hero and is destined to defeat the demon lord, He and his party treats that as a license to do whatever and treat anyone however they want with no consequences. For instance, They fire Rein for his perceived uselessness, and when he refuses to rejoin them, they are insulted that he would dare turn them down.
