Later, when Khaemezra picked up the sword during a battle it broke the spell she was using to control Tereath and enabled him to kill her.

When they enter the mortal world they can take any form of their choosing — though they often appear as monsters, in truth a demon's body is limited only by their imagination (and/or any limitations imposed by their summoner). Vane have a more limited form of this ability; they can change hair, skin or eye color at will and are capable of more complex transformations, but this is much more difficult, time-consuming and uncomfortable.
