The Hagenheim series by Melanie Dickerson are fairytale retellings set in The Middle Ages. It replaces all of the magical elements in the story with religion because Religion is Magic. The books follow two families, the ruling family of Hagenheim castle in the Holy Roman Empire and the le Wyse family in England. The books in the series are The Healer's Apprentice (Sleeping Beauty) The Merchant's Daughter (Beauty and the Beast) The Fairest Beauty (Snow White) The Captive Maiden (Cinderella) The Princess Spy (The Frog Prince) The Golden Braid (Rapunzel) The Silent Songbird (The Little Mermaid) The Orphan's Wish (Aladdin)A Spin-Off series of sorts, a Medieval Fairy Tale Series, also combines two separate stories into one plot. The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest (Robin Hood meets Swan Lake) The Beautiful Pretender (Beauty and the Beast meets The Princess and the Pea) The Noble Servant (The Goose Girl meets The Prince and the Pauper)

Early-Installment Weirdness
Hagenheim / int_4f4372e9 | comment |
Early-Installment Weirdness: The Healer's Apprentice contains supernatural elements, or at least a strong sense of Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane, with the villain implied to be able to conjure demons, whereas the later books only feature supernatural elements in a directly religious sense. The Healer's Apprentice is mostly an original story that makes passing references to the Sleeping Beauty story, mostly towards the end, starting with the fact that the name does not reference its corresponding fairy tale explicitly like the other books do. The other books tend to be straightforward retellings of the classic fairy tales they're based on.
