The Goosebumps book where two kids have to try and kill a swamp monster.Gretchen and her stepbrother Clark are visiting Gretchen's grandparents in Georgia. It's not much fun for them, especially after Grandma Rose and Grandpa Eddie leave the house one morning... without properly warning the kids that there's a swamp monster locked up in one of their spare rooms, and they've gone to try and find someone who knows how to kill it. Now, Gretchen and Clark must figure out how to kill the monster themselves. It was adapted into the eighteenth episode of the second season of the TV series.

Noisy Nature: The swamp is constantly filled with the sounds of creatures within it. The noises consist of moaning, crying, and even howling. Considering the fact that the monster that's trapped in the house has a large family living in the depths of the swamp, these sounds are probably coming from them.

Make Sure He's Dead: Gretchen does this twice after two attempts in killing the monster. The first time, she deduces that it is dead, but that turns out not to be the case. The second time, Gretchen doesn't wait long to decide if it really stuck because she wanted to escape the house at last, but she's pretty sure it's definitely dead.

Poor Communication Kills
 How to Kill a Monster / int_1c445e86
comment
Poor Communication Kills: One of the main themes of the book. The grandparents don't tell the grandkids that they have a monster in their home and that it's in the forbidden room. This results in them accidentally setting it free because they don't know the dangers of the room. The grandparents leave notes on the fridge telling them even though it would be much more efficient to tell them in person before leaving. This results in the kids failing to learn of the other monsters in the swamp until it's too late. It's ultimately revealed that the monster is deathly allergic to humans and can speak, meaning if it had attempted to communicate with the humans or had they mentioned they were humans within earshot of him, both sides may have realized that he shouldn't try to eat them and therefore it would be in everyone's best interest if he simply left the home and returned to the swamp so the humans' monster problem would be solved and he would be reunited with his family.

Chekhov's Gun: It's established that there is a certain flight of stairs in the house that is so old that it's easy for someone to fall through it. The kids later use this to try to kill the swamp monster. They also poison one of Grandma's pies to feed to the monster, which was also established earlier.

Speak of the Devil: Gretchen and Clark escape to the swamp and remember to read the second letter. To their shock, it tells them that the swamp is home to plenty of other monsters just like the one at the house, and they are seeking vengeance for their lost sibling. Just as they read this aloud, they hear whistling sounds that are just as described as the sounds that the monsters make, and they can see moving shadows around them.

But then a flat tire occurs, causing the car to crash into the side of the bridge, and to plunge below. Thankfully, they survive.

Stopped Reading Too Soon: Throughout the book, the two main characters are trapped inside their grandparent's house with a monster inside. They find a letter from their grandparents telling them they left and warns them about the monster inside. After killing the monster and escaping from the house and into the swamp at night, they continue reading the letter explaining that their grandparents had locked them inside for their protection and to prevent them from leaving the house because there are more monsters in the swamp and they come out at night. After they finish reading, the kids have no idea what they are going to do next.

Trash the Set: When the monster is released from the bedroom he was trapped in, it lays waste to the massive house. It roams throughout the house, finds a piano which it repeatedly throws around the room, destroys plenty of furniture, and in its' rampage the vibration causes plenty of the books, dishware, figurines, and mounted pictures to fall off the walls and shelves and tumble to the ground. And when dying, it stumbles against a locked door that tears open from its' weight, thus providing an exit out of the house for the protagonists.

Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: The book ends with the heroes captured by the monster, after their attempts at killing it by making it fall through the stairs and poisoning it failed. Said monster is allergic to humans, and keels over dead (and then exploded in the TV version) after merely licking one. Idiot Ball: When opening the door to the locked room, Gretchen and Clark find the monster, and they don't think to just simply close the door and lock it again so it wouldn't escape. They instead run away in terror, with the door wide open for the monster to leave and chase after them. Highly justified, as they were quite terrified by suddenly stumbling upon this large monster, and were too panic struck to think straight at the moment.

Adults Are Useless
 How to Kill a Monster / int_a939d96a
comment
Adults Are Useless: The grandparents here are arguably the stupidest adults in the entire franchise. They wait until after the kids arrived to go and try to find help to kill the monster they caught and stored in an upstairs room, deciding to lock the kids inside the house and tell them nothing, opting instead to leave notes on the fridge, which the kids find too late, as they let the monster out due to an honest mistake. The grandparents hid the truth because they were "afraid that the parents wouldn't let the kids stay with them if they knew there was a monster in the house". And rather than taking the kids with them, the grandparents genuinely believe the kids are safer locked inside the house with the monster so long as they don't open a door. Main character Gretchen is furious at her grandparents' sheer stupidity, pointing out to stepbrother Clark that the grandparents won't be coming back with help because nobody will believe them about a monster in their house.

"Ray of Hope" Ending: The book ends with the two step siblings, along with Charley, about to be surrounded by the monster's vengeful siblings. However, that monster was allergic to humans, so perhaps this could be the same for the others. If that's the case, then the protagonists wouldn't have to put up much of a fight, and can escape. There is a possibility they could simply run out of the swamp if they are fast enough, and that the story being narrated in past-tense first-person perspective by Gretchen is a good sign.

The Load: Charley. Though he does detect the monster and try to protect Gretchen and Clark from it near the end, he proves to be quite a handful. He isn't very useful for most of the book, and the kids have to lock him in different rooms to protect him from the monster.

Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: The book ends with the heroes captured by the monster, even after their attempts at killing it by making it fall through the stairs and poisoning it. Said monster is allergic to humans, and keels over dead after merely licking one. Unfortunately, the monster's friends are pissed off after this. Cue the chills, as the book ends with the heroes alone, far away from town, and in a marsh filled with these hungry, soon to awaken creatures. Hopefully the other monsters are allergic to humans too.

Swamp Monster: Played for Black Comedy. A brother and sister are left alone in their odd grandparents' house... and discover a green-furred swamp creature has roosted in a room. When the monster attacks them, it suddenly reveals that it's allergic to humans and dies of an asthmatic attack. The kids triumphantly leave the house and travel through the swamp to find help. Too bad it turns out the monster has plenty of siblings of its own out there.

Up Close with the Monster: When she is cornered by the monster, Gretchen finds herself uncomfortably close to it and seeing it's face in close detail, and then it licks her. However, this turns out to be the monster's own undoing, when it realizes too late that it's allergic to the very thing it's licking.
