Keynes Cruisers is an ongoing work of Alternate History by fester of AlternateHistory.com, specifically focused on World War II. It is written in a vignette format, and the author has admitted the work taken inspiration from many World War II based AH works, including Astrodragon's The Whale Has Wings and SergeantHeretic's A True and Better Alamo Redux.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })The point of divergence in this timeline from real life occurs 2 years before the start of the Second World War and the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. Due to the effects of The Great Depression in America, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Democratic Party, fresh off a electoral victory in the United States Presidential Election of 1936, had to decide what to do with the economy now that it had returned to pre-depression levels. At this time in real life, FDR's economic policies was being influenced by the British economist John Maynard Keynes, and after the 1937 budget passed, FDR, in real life, decided to try to balance the budget and cut government spending, but this only triggered a recession that lasted two years. The point of divergence for this timeline is rather than FDR turning his back on Keynesian Economics and try to go back to pre-Depression government policy, like in real life, FDR decides to keep following Keynes' economic theories and spend more money to simulate the economy.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Due to the continuation of Keynes' economic theories within the federal government, the revised 1937 version of the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act, while stripping funding from the Works Progress Administration, included a huge expansion of the United States Armed Forces that kept within what Keynes' economic theories preached, which were deficit spending. The expansion included the reinforcement of the Philippines, the splitting of the US armoured forces from the infantry, the sending of 16 tankers to Standard Oil and, most importantly the construction and addition of 3 heavy cruisers, 6 light cruisers, 24 destroyers and 1 additional aircraft carrier for the United States Navy......You can find the work here.

Dropped a Bridge on Him: Field Marshal Douglas MacArthur, who commanded the American forces during the invasion of the Philippines in real life, dies suddenly when the Douglas B-18 Bolo he was flying in suffered a catastrophic engine fire and the plane crashed into Leyte Gulf. Major General Erwin Rommel, the infamous "Desert Fox" that lead the Afrika Korps during the North African campaign in real life, is killed in France when a British soldier, named below, shoots him and then bayonets him during the struggle for Arras in the Battle for France. The solider that killed Rommel, Private MacMahon, was also killed suddenly when his rest spot was bombed by a group of Heinkel He 111 level bombers. Ensign Ted Sullivan dies suddenly when the PBY Catalina he was flying in gets shot out of the sky over the South China Sea, but not before reporting the presence of the Japanese invasion fleet heading directly to the Philippine Islands.

In response to the new American cruisers, the Japanese decide to build Asama in 1939, a heavily modified Mogami-class heavy cruiser that basically is the Japanese equivalent of the one-off Super Prototype heavy cruiser. According to Word of God, it is very similar to the real life ''Ibuki''-class heavy cruiser◊.

Reliably Unreliable Guns: The 1.1"/75 caliber AA gun had this trope reputation at the start (playing the trope straight), although it is being subverted as the bugs are ironed out and the guns reliability increases.

For Want of a Nail

For Want of a Nail: This trope plays a heavy role in the story, as it was started by one. The initial POD is this as the United States Congress, instead of trying to invest in the WPA, decides to follow the economic theories of John Maynard Keynes and invest more money into projects to help the economy get out of the Great Recession, which included a expansion of the United States Navy. The effects of the increased number of ships becomes apparent as the US Pacific and Atlantic Fleets are reinforced with the new cruisers and destroyers, with, as of October 1941, USS Lansing and USS Norfolk heading to Pearl Harbour. The increased budget also left more money to put into other projects, which meant that the 1.1"/75 caliber AA gun, which in real life was infamous for its jamming problems, had the time and money to be properly debugged and be ironed out of its problems in the process. This also leads onto a knock on effect as due to the guns being more reliable, they get mounted earlier onto American carriers, battleships and cruisers in their overhauls, replacing old .50 caliber light AA machine guns. Which leads to.... Wake Island, which at that point was already better developed due to the budget increase getting three of the old single 5"/51 naval guns from the battleships as coastal defence batteries. And due to the more earlier overhauls, two of the twin 8"/55 naval guns from the Lexington-class carriers get sent to Wake, also as coastal defence batteries, reinforced with steel reinforced concrete and camouflaged. A Norwegian naval lieutenant pointing out the shoal covered by the pencil on HMS Effingham (D98) saves it from running aground, and allows the ship to escort and save HMS Glorious and HMS Acasta (H09) from Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, while sinking in the process. Luckily, that particular naval lieutenant survives. The death of Rommel during the French Campaign deprives the Wehrmacht of a brilliant commander and forced OKW to appoint a more cautious commander to the Afrika Korps, giving the needed time for the British forces to shore up their defences, meaning Libya is not lost and the Brits pushed back to Egypt. A PBY Catalina, doing routine sea patrols in the South China Sea, manages to spot the Japanese invasion fleet thats heading towards the Philippine Islands and manages to report it back to Manila. The plane doesn't make it back, as it gets shot down.

Cool Boat: Since this is named Keynes' Cruisers and focused on naval construction, this trope is pretty much mandatory. For the United States Navy: USS Wichita (CA-45), a one-off Super Prototype heavy cruiser in real life, gets three new sister ships in this timeline due to the increased naval budget. They are named Los Angeles (CA-51), Seattle (CA-52) and Lansing (CA-53), and eventually create a new ship class entirely, the Wichita-class of heavy cruisers. In addition, the two-ship St. Louis-class of light cruisers, which compromised of USS St. Louis (CL-49) and USS Helena (CL-50) and were upgraded versions of their predecessors the Brooklyn-class, also gain 6 additional sister ships, bringing the class total to 8 ships. In order, they are named Jacksonville (CL-54), Billings (CL-55), Norfolk (CL-56), Roanoke (CL-57), Charleston (CL-58) and Newark (CL-59). The Yorktown-class of aircraft carriers also gain an additional sister ship as well, in the form of USS Constellation (CV-8), now increasing the class number to 4 ships. The increased naval budget also allowed the construction of 24 additional 1500 tonne destroyers, in the form of 8 Sims-class destroyers (increasing the class number from 12 to 20) and 16 Gleaves-class destroyers (increasing the class number from 66 to 82.) For the Imperial Japanese Navy: In response to the new American cruisers, the Japanese decide to build Asama in 1939, a heavily modified Mogami-class heavy cruiser that basically is the Japanese equivalent of the one-off Super Prototype heavy cruiser. According to Word of God, it is very similar to the real life ''Ibuki''-class heavy cruiser◊. For the Royal Navy: Of course, HMS Hood (51) herself. Due to the less strain on the British War Machine, the King George V-class battleships have time to properly work out their deficiencies and fix any bugs, which included the malfunctioning turrets. After that is done, they are now considered to be capable first line battleships.

The Cavalry: In the Pacific Theater: The United States Asiatic Fleet, in the final days of peace before the Pacific War, gets a unexpected batch of reinforcements from the United States Pacific Fleet in the form of a supply convoy, in the form of USS Boise (CL-47), a Brooklyn-class light cruiser, USS Norfolk (CL-56), a modified St. Louis-class light cruiser and USS Grau (DD-414), USS Watkins (DD-415), USS Wielde (DD-416) and USS Page (DD-417), four Sims-class destroyers. Force Z, the British Naval Cavalry in real life that was sunk by Japanese bombers on December 10, 1941, is reinforced with HMS Renown and two light cruisers.

Epic Ship-on-Ship Action

Epic Ship-on-Ship Action: Many examples. The naval battle between Admiral Graf Spee and a group of British cruisers on November 24, 1939, and instead of the Graf Spee being scuttled, she is instead sunk. For the Norwegian Campaign: HMS Glowworm (H92) against the German destroyers Z11 Bernd von Arnim, Z18 Hans Lüdemann and the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper. HNoMS Eidsvold, a coastal defence battleship, against 5 destroyers in Narvik. She managed to smash 2 destroyers to pieces before she is sunk by torpedoes. Her sister, HNoMS Norge, gets revenge as she lames and sinks 3 more destroyers before being pummelled to pieces herself. The escape of HMS Glorious and HMS Acasta (H09) from Scharnhorst and Gneisenau with the help from HMS Effingham (D98). The HMS Ardent (H41) is sunk, alongside the German training cruiser Emden and Effingham herself. A more decisive Battle of the Denmark Strait between the German battleship Bismarck & German cruiser Prinz Eugen and the HMS Hood (51), HMS Prince of Wales (53), HMS Suffolk (55) and HMS Norfolk (78). This time, the debugged turrets of Prince of Wales and Hood herself manage to sink the Bismarck and force Prinz Eugen to flee, saving the Hood from being destroyed by the golden shot that sank her in real life.
