My Heart Is A Chainsaw is a 2021 Slasher drama novel written by Stephen Graham Jones. The novel focuses on a quickly gentrifying town rocked by a series of brutal murders and a half-Indigenous girl's journey as she tries to navigate the bloodbath and the rules of the genre.Jade Daniels is a half-Indian girl living in Proofrock, a town that wants nothing to do with her, growing up with an abusive father and an absent mother. However, as blood spills in the lake, Jade will have to use her encyclopedic knowledge of horror films to make sense of what's going on. As she digs up the history of the town, she also sets out to assist the apparent Final Girl, Letha Mondragon, in surviving the events that follow.The novel is the first in the Indian Lake trilogy. The sequel, Don't Fear the Reaper, was released in 2023, and follows Jade's return to Proofrock a few years after being exonerated of the crimes that take place in the first novel - at the same time that notorious Native serial killer Dark Mill South escapes from prison himself. | |

Genre Savvy: Jade is an enormous slasher film buff, and most of the book is spent following her attempts to diagnose exactly the type of slasher story is happening in Proofrock and to stage-manage the various characters into their 'destined' positions. It mostly comes off as a cry for help to everyone else. Letha eventually qualifies as this in Don't Fear the Reaper after she spends most of the 4 year Time Skip compulsively watching horror movies like Jade did (partially out of guilt for not taking her warnings seriously back in 2015). Come the sequel, she can easily keep up with Jade's slasher expertise. | |

Downer Ending: Both books currently released don't end in the happiest ways: In My Heart is a Chainsaw, Jade is able to kill her abusive father, but another citizen records the act, which practically places all of the deaths solely on her shoulders. Letha lives, but is in critical condition and is unable to provide evidence to exonerate Jade. The novel ends with Jade hiding on the roof of a dam management station, watching a mother bear risk its life to protect its cub, an act of parental love she hasn't seen since she was a child. In Don't Fear the Reaper, the killers are revealed to not only be Dark Mill South but also Cinnamon Baker and Melanie, the spirit of Hardy's daughter. Jade survives, killing Dark Mill South, but not before 20 people lose their lives. Hardy is missing, presumed dead. The police and media arrive at Proofrock after the storm clears. In order to protect Banner and Letha, Jade takes the blame for driving the snowplow into the lake, and because destroying government property is a violation of her probation, it means Jade will likely have to go back to jail. The penultimate scene in the book is of her raising South's hook hand as she's arrested. | |
