"The Ghoul and the Seraph" is a script poem consisting of three distinct sub-poems. It was written by Clark Ashton Smith and went into print in December of 1922 as part of Smith's privately published poetry bundle Ebony and Crystal. The script format was previously used for "The Masque of Forsaken Gods" and "The Corpse and the Skeleton" and within the pages of Ebony and Crystal is also used for "The Witch in the Graveyard". It'd be revisited one last time for "The Flight of Azrael"."The Ghoul and the Seraph" is formed by three distinct poems: a song, a dialogue, and another song. Each sub-poem is prefaced by a short description of the scene in which it is uttered as one would find in a script. The first sub-poem, a ghoul's song celebrating disease, consists of three stanzas that all follow an ABABA rhyme scheme. The second sub-poem has no rhyme and comprises flowery dirt-slinging between the aforementioned ghoul and a seraph that has joined him. The last sub-poem is the ghoul's second song as he leaves the seraph to himself. It honors several carnivores and scavengers in four stanzas that all follow an ABBACC rhyme scheme.

All Are Equal in Death: Both of the ghoul's songs make it a point that death comes to all regardless of who they are. Some of the relevant lyrics include "churl and king," whom the worm will both feast on and "maiden, queen and whore," whom the Pest will strike down equally.

Orichalcum: The seraph mentions mines of orichalch and steel, incidentally both alloys and not pure metals in real life, that are excavated by demons to make tools from for Satan.

Our Angels Are Different: An unnamed seraph confronts the ghoul while he's out for a walk. The seraph possesses "wings whose iris the moonlight has rendered faint" and with them moves about in a manner that's both walking and flying. Their only two objectives appear to be to insult the ghoul and to try to make him jealous that he has to eat corpses while Paradise is full of the finest foods he'll never taste.

Repeated for Emphasis: Each stanza of the second song ends with the same two lines emphasizing that death treats all the same: "Beetle and worm and I will ward / The feastful graves of lout and lord."

Desecrating the Dead: The ghoul's food of choice are corpses from new-made graves. He compares his meal-picking to a farmer making the most of his turnip fields.

No Name Given: While the ghoul answers the seraph's inquiry who he is by giving his name as Necromalor, the seraph lacks the manners to answer the ghoul's inquiry who they are.

Our Ghouls Are Creepier: A ghoul named Necromalor strolls around a cemetery singing of decay and looking for a new corpse to consume. He is not bothered when a seraph shows up that tries to insult him and make him feel miserable, turning his back on the other with another song.
