Magic A Is Magic A: There are two forms of magic in this world. One is Elemental Magic, which (in theory) anyone can learn (in practice if you lack a good teacher and/or enough free time to practice you might never reach the point of being able to use it), granting them the ability to create and control water, fire, etc. The second is Lineal Magic, which is limited to certain bloodlines and has unique effects such as healing, enchantment, space-time effects, etc. New Lineal Magics can spontaneously appear in people known as "first generation mages," but such people are only born once every few centuries. Further, these new Lineal Magics have never been known to be the same magic as that of a previously known Lineal Magic. As such, Lineal Magics are incredibly precious to the world in general and the nation they are found in in particular (each royal family in the present being a practitioner of a Lineal Magic that the entire nation bases much of its identity around). Should a family line be wiped out (as almost happened to the Capua family), the magic is most likely lost forever. Likewise, to maintain it requires that the line marry relatives (though marriage to immediate family seems to be avoided when possible) on a regular basis to avoid diluting the power, albeit distant relatives sometimes are born with the Lineal Magic unusually strong in them (in such cases they can find themselves suddenly adopted as part of the main royal family in the case that the Lineal Magic is part of the royal line, rather than the distant branch royal family they were part of). | |

After Aura makes the offer to Zenjirou that he emigrate to another world to marry a beautiful woman and live a life of ease and luxury, Zenjirou concludes that it probably is too good to be true and starts wondering what Aura stands to gain. He, accurately, concludes that she wants him because in the male-dominated kingdom of Capua, a complete outsider like him will not be a political threat to her power. Indeed, though the two of them quickly form a loving relationship, a recurring concern is nobles potentially using Zenjirou as a pawn to erode Aura's authority. By accepting Aura's offer and traveling to a fantasy world for a new life, Zenjirou is abandoning his entire preexisting life. Aura feels guilty about the huge demand she's making and gives him time to properly put his affairs in order before he has to give up everything he's ever know. Zenjirou agrees to go partially because he has no family left alive, but as the deadline approaches he realizes he still has connections and relationships that are going to be permanently severed and does have second thoughts about the idea. The change in living standards from modern Japan to a medieval fantasy kingdom like Capua is severe. Zenjirou finds himself rather uncomfortable the one night he spends in Capua before Aura gives him a month back on Earth to come to a decision. He spends most of the month preparing ways to bring modern conveniences like fans and video games with him and conditioning himself to go without items he can't bring. Aura offers Zenjirou a life of ease and that she'll only need him to father her children, but as a member of a royal family, Zenjirou is an immensely important public figure. The optics of him doing nothing but staying holed up in his chambers are rather bad and he does need to make appearances in social gatherings and important events, which also require him to receive an education on the etiquette and political nuances of Capua. This dovetails into him taking on an increasingly demanding role in Capua's political landscape. Aura laments that she broke her promise to not require any work from him and Zenjirou reassures her he had expected this sort of outcome from the onset. Even when first hearing her offer, he was concerned that his pride wouldn't be able to accept becoming a layabout rather than being a productive member of society. | |

By the same token, while Zenjirou considers Aura to be his ideal in most every way (even if her strength effects his confidence at times), many in her culture find it hard to understand how any man could love her so fervently. By the standards of the Capua nobles Aura's strength in battle and accomplishments in the war make it hard for them to find any feminine charm in her at all. They may still respect her as a ruler and warrior, but find her lacking in the things they find attractive in a woman. Capua has medieval levels of medicine and its people are accustomed to the mortality rates that confers. A brief point of conflict is when Carlos falls ill, those native to Capua brush it off as his illness has a ninety percent chance he'll recover, while Zenjirou is appalled he's expected to accept a ten percent chance that his son will die. The power dynamics of a medieval kingdom are quite different than of the modern world. Zenjirou's automatic politeness, such as making requests of his maids rather than giving them orders, is an obstacle to his integrating into Capua's society. His etiquette tutor's first lesson to him is that he's being much too deferential to her, his social inferior, and trains him out of that impulse. The story is careful, however, to make it clear that often (though not always) the differences in values are not due to those who hold them being "bad" people with malicious intentions or lack of standards, but rather having different priorities and life experiences. In particular the focus on the importance of keeping bloodlines as pure as possible has very practical uses as it's the best way to keep unique bloodline magics strong and available. | |

He used his Space-Time magic to elope with his lover to another world. The story was true and that other world was Earth. Zenjirou is a descendant of that prince and that is why he was summoned. It turns out that the princess the prince eloped with was a member of the Sharou royal family, meaning Zenjirou inherited the ability to pass on Bestowal magic as well. Zenjirou and Aura's son Carlos turns out to have enough magical power to use Space-Time Magic and Bestowal magic. A fact they have to keep secret to avoid causing political turmoil. | |

A skilled magician can deliberately stop the flow of magical power to stop the function between themselves and another party. Further, the 'soul of words' does not allow you to read words in a given language, only to understand a language when it is spoken aloud.
