First published in Universe Science Fiction (May 1954 issue) by Isaac Asimov, this Science Fiction Short Story is about William Shakespeare.Dr. Phineas Welch, a physics professor, starts bragging to Scott Robertson, an English teacher,during the faculty Christmas party. Dr Welch claims to have invented temporal transference that can bring famous historical figures into the present. He tried several geniuses who nevertheless couldn't handle the dramatic social changes of centuries. So he tried William Shakespeare, and tells Robertson about how well the Bard had adjusted, until the day a very pissed-off Shakespeare who demanded to be sent back to his own time, having never felt so insulted in his life. Fish out of Temporal Water: Every historical figure that Dr Welch brings to the present begged/demanded to be returned to their own time in very short order, finding the present day far too alien for them to be comfortable in. The exception was William Shakespeare, who adjusted quite well and stuck around for several months... until one day he too demanded to be sent back, not because something made him uncomfortable, but because something seriously pissed him off. He took a college class on analyzing the works of Shakespeare. And failed. | |
