As the Good Book Says...: The mysterious notes tend to be quotes from The Bible. Zeeney's equally obnoxious husband, Wallace, gets a note that reads, "You need more pull to get a rich man into heaven than to get a camel through the eye of a needle."

Parental Abandonment: Beth Ellen's father simply got up and left one day and never came back (possibly to get away from Zeeney). Zeeney herself is a traveling lady of leisure who long ago left Beth Ellen to be raised by her grandparents. In this book, however, Zeeney visits, and Beth Ellen is not happy to see her.

Rich Bitch: Zeeney, in the words of Harriet's father, "never thinks about anything but clothes and men and money". She expects Beth Ellen to have Acceptable Feminine Goals and, when Beth Ellen says she wants to go to college and pursue a career as an artist instead of marrying a rich man, throws a fit, naming Harriet's mother (who is married to her ex-boyfriend) as a bad influence on her and Harriet.

"Anger Is Healthy" Aesop

comment
"Anger Is Healthy" Aesop: Shy and meek Beth Ellen is often told by her old-fashioned grandmother that to be a lady, she mustn't get angry—that she must remain composed at all times. Near the end of the book (after Beth Ellen throws an epic tantrum on learning that Zeeney, her Rich Bitch mother, wants to take her from her home to Europe), her grandmother walks back on this advice, saying that she should never be afraid to express how she feels, even if it's anger. It's implied that her earlier inability to express herself (particularly her anger) is the reason that she turned out to be the leaver of the hurtful notes.

Beware the Quiet Ones: Beth Ellen is normally shy and meek, but when Zeeney wants to take to her live in Europe, she throws an epic tantrum. This is shown to be a key to the "long secret" itself, and it's revealed that she's been the one leaving the notes.

First Period Panic: Beth Ellen, on getting her first period, thinks she's sick. It doesn't help that her well-meaning but old-fashioned grandmother tells her a myth about rocks in one's body that cause menstruation. Fortunately, Janie happens to be visiting Water Mill and tells Beth Ellen how menstruation actually works.

Be Careful What You Wish For: Harriet has long been curious about the Shark's Tooth Inn, the slightly rundown hotel in Water Mill. She overhears a phone conversation between Bunny, the lounge pianist (who's also the manager) and the owner, and realizes that the owner is Mrs. Plumber, the rich crazy lady she used to spy on in Harriet the Spy. Mrs. Plumber appears later and ends up getting a colossal "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Bunny for her control-freak attitude.
