This Is Happiness is a 2019 novel by Irish author Niall Williams. It is narrated by an elderly man, Noel Crowe, and consists of his recollections of a few months he spent at age 19 with his grandparents in Faha, a village in rural western Ireland, after abandoning studies for the priesthood. Coincidentally, shortly after he arrives, a stranger named Christy shows up as a fellow lodger and, as the Irish government's man on the ground to promote rural electrification, drafts Noel into helping him convince local residents to accept wires and poles along the roads and the prospect of electric bills in their mailboxes. For Christie, the job is a means to a different end, and for Noe, as he is commonly called, it's briefly a helpful distraction from the reasons he chose to drop out of seminary, at least until he gets hit on the head by a stray electric pole and finds another brief distraction at the doctor's office.

Irish Priest: Two figure as background figures but this is pious 1950s Ireland so of course a parish in the middle of nowhere can support two priests.

Christianity is Catholic: There is brief mention of the Church of Ireland, but big chunks of the plot involve either the fact that the narrator's mother anticipated that he would become a priest and yet he has decided not to follow through, or around the fact that the bulk of the action happens in the vicinity of Easter in a devout region of a heavily Catholic country.
