In a video game with Loot Boxes, the Random Number God is not going to be on your side all the time. But to screw over the player continuously wouldn't be fair, nor would it be rewarding (plus, there's a chance that said player paid for those Loot Boxes). So what's a game developer to do? Well, to make it so that you'll get something good out of that pesky Lootbox eventually. Basically, this is an Anti-Frustration Feature specific to games with Loot Boxes. After the player pulls several undesirable rewards in a row, the game either increases the player's chances of getting a rare item, or allows a consolation prize of whatever the unlucky player was chasing. Sometimes, it takes the form of a "mileage points" system that allows the player to get the desired prize, no matter if he pulled something else or not, but it takes proportionally more points to activate. In some circles, it's often called the "Pity Timer" by players. Kingdom Hearts χ has jewel draws that guarantee a player will draw a specific Medal introduced in the deal if they pull it enough times. Also, premium content every week (which costs real-world money to access) usually gives out these kinds of Medals in extremely easy quests.

In Tales of Crestoria, draws for characters and Memoria Stones come with a guarantee that the first time they're used, a player will get an SR or SSR from it. Also, when a player first starts the game, they're allowed to pull one SSR character and Memoria Stone of their choosing for free.
