A character falls in with a group generally regarded with ill-repute, be it gangsters, monsters, or the literal hordes of hell. However, their lives before this were so terrible that such a situation is an unambiguous step up. Most often the "bad guys" are more sympathetic to the character's plight than a regular person would be, or their situation is such that they genuinely fit in better with this darker group than they ever did with normal society. This can be played for laughs or for drama. When Played for Laughs or lightheartedness, a starker contrast between the "bad" guys being decent people vs where the character came from can be seen. Often, despite their bad reputation, they're absurdly kind and are only considered 'bad' for something outside their control, such as a frightening appearance. When Played for Drama, things take a darker turn as the "bad" guys are likely every bit as evil and horrible as their reputations suggest... and they're still an improvement over where the character was previously. Characters in this situation are prone to be very loyal due to the kindness they've been offered, even if it means becoming an outright villain. Odds on an eventual Heel–Face Turn are fifty-fifty. For related tropes see Raised by the Supernatural and Raised by Orcs, which often involves a similar situation of a human being raised by something not typical, and often considered evil, and Changeling Fantasy, which often sees a human entering a strange, new, world for adventure. When this trope concerns supernatural creatures, it can also include Humans Are the Real Monsters. If the villains are actively creating this situation, they're promising Better Living Through Evil and/or Evil Pays Better. Compare Criminal Found Family. Contrast Being Evil Sucks. |

This played with in A Loud Among Demons. Lincoln didn't really want to work for I.M.P., but since he was trapped in hell by a curse, he has no choice but to work with them if he wanted to survive. However, IMP and Lincoln become genuinely fond of one another, and when C.H.E.R.U.B offers to take him to Heaven, he refuses. Partly out of disgust with their failure to help a good person like him, but largely because he feels genuine loyalty to I.M.P. who looked after him.

Inuyasha: Rin became mute and scared of humans after her family was slaughtered by thieves. The villagers treated her as an outcast and beat her for picking up food. After she was killed by wolves, Sesshoumaru revived her out of curiosity but allowed Rin to tag along with him and his servant Jaken. Thanks to him, she recovered her voice and became a normal, cheerful child; also she was treated decently by the two cold youkais. The arrangement has benefited both parties, as Sesshoumaru eventually warmed up to Rin and developed a merciful side... kind of. In the sequel anime, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, this has led to an Interspecies Marriage and Babies Ever After between Sesshomaru and Rin. |

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: The Hearthfire DLC allows the Player Character, who may very well be a member of the Thieves' Guild or the Dark Brotherhood, to adopt children. The DLC also adds four orphans who are either living on the streets or are living a life of exhausting labor to earn a sleeping place that is only technically under a roof. If they are adopted by the Player Character, they live in an actual house, sleep in a real bed, get regular meals, and overall get to be kids again.

Shoplifters: A very poor family shoplifts to make ends meet. Osamu and Nobuyo are the father and mother figures, however "their" kids, Shota and Yuri, were actually abducted because their biological families were abusive to them. The grandmother figure Hatsue has no relation to any of them and stays with them because she has no one else to turn to. Aki is the daughter of Hatsue's husband and his second wife and stays with the found family because she can't cope with the high expectations her parents have for her. In the end, the family's crimes catch up to them and they're separated, with Hatsue dying, Nobuyo going to jail and the kids going back to their abusive families, which the film implies is a worse fate than if they stayed with their criminal found family.

My Hero Academia: As a child, Tomura Shigaraki grew up in a strict home, with a father who would punish him by forcing him to sit outside until he behaved himself, a mother and grandparents who offered only platitudes, and a sister as likely to sell him out as console him. When Tomura's quirk to cause objects he touches to decay awakened, it was after his father's emotional abuse turned physical and resulted in Tomura massacring most of his family by accident, then deliberately killing his father when he attacked Tomura in an attempt to defend himself. It was soon after this, and after being left alone due to Bystander Syndrome (along with the fact that they were too scared to approach him due to his scary appearance), that he fell into the clutches of Greater-Scope Villain All For One, who raised him from that day forward, becoming his mentor, encouraging his more destructive tendencies, and teaching him how to achieve his goal of upending Hero Society. All For One is perhaps the one thing in the world Shigaraki doesn't hate with a passion. La Brava became enamored with the self-proclaimed villain Gentle Criminal after seeing the videos he posted of himself committing crimes, lending her hacker skills to his cause to become a name worthy of the history books. Prior to this, she had been a Hikikomori following mockery from her first love and had even been contemplating suicide. Gentle's presence in her life gives her cause to go on, despite doing so making La Brava herself an accomplice to his crimes. |

Daeva from Heroes of Might and Magic VI. As a human, she endured years of abuse at the hands of her father, who she eventually murdered, spent some time at the mercy of slavers who subjected her to further abuse, fell in with some demon cultists, and was subsequently tortured to death by the inquisition. As a result of her time with the cultists, her soul was reborn in Sheogh as a Succubus - which far from being the dance over hot coals she feared it to be, is wicked fun in comparison to her mortal life.

Downplayed in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, as while the protagonists are Neighborhood-Friendly Gangsters, they are still criminals by law. Though Bruno Bucciarati manages to be a proper father figure many of the characters needed. In one example, Narancia Ghirga had his mother die from an eye infection, grew up with a neglectful father, and was framed for a break in by his False Friend. The moment he meet Fugo and Buccarati, they covered for his desperate stealing from their frequent restaurant, provided him lunch, and paid for his eye treatment. Interestingly Bucciarati didn't want Narancia to become a gangster and told him to go back to a normal life. But because the two were the first genuinely kind people in his life, Narancia applied to Passione and got assigned to Bucciarati's team.

Before that, her father left her and her mother, taking Chise's baby brother with him, because her powers attracted evil youkais. Chise's life was so miserable that she thought of commiting suicide, before Seth suggested she sold herself in auction. She was bought by Elias Ainsworth, an Eldritch Abomination hated by humans and fairies, and yet, they came to love each other at the point of Elias deciding to try and become a better person for her. Played with in Infinity Train. Over the course of season 3, Grace had grown closer to Hazel, a little girl in the care of a train denizen named Tuba. After Tuba is murdered by Simon, Grace tries to become Hazel's guardian. Shortly after, the group of three reunites with Amelia, who, for lack of a better word, is Hazel's mother. Amelia isn't the villain of the season (she's working on her Heel–Face Turn) but she still isn't nice. All the same, Hazel chooses to go with Amelia instead of continuing to travel with Grace and Simon. Considering how they'd killed other denizens like her for almost a decade, had killed Tuba in cold blood, and were clearly incapable of raising a child, Hazel really was better off with Amelia than Grace and Simon.

Warhammer: Subverted with beastmen. People whose mutation give them animal traits are soon driven out from their native homes, and often find refuge in beastmen hordes. Bronze: As a retelling of the tale Beauty and the Beast, the game starts with Beauty returning to the castle, seven days after Beast sent her back home. The prologue reveals that her return wasn't as she expected. Her father avoids her because he thinks she is Defiled Forever, although she sacrificed herself so he wouldn't become Beast's prisoner. Her sisters treat her better, but it's more to have someone they can talk to and Beauty feels that they won't miss her that much. As soon as she finds her way back to the castle, she "breathes more easily".

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: This becomes one of the main reasons for Entrapta's defection to the Horde (alongside her interest in their tech), when she was on the side good she was treated with little respect by her fellow princesses and was often an outcast who received poor treatment with a few exceptions such as Bow. On the Horde, she made friends with Scorpia, Imp and eventually Hordak, with whom she bonded over their self-esteem issues, in addition to getting a high ranking position that let her tamper with all the technology she wanted. When she returns to the Rebellion's side, it is made clear that in spite of her being good and trying to help the other princesses still treat her rather badly for her quirks and personality.

Ensemble Stars!: Akatsuki were antagonists during the war and were involved in quite a few morally questionable acts that hurt many other people, so Keito feels guilty for bringing Kuro into all of that as a member. However, Kuro entirely disagrees and is actually grateful he was brought in, as before he joined Yumenosaki he was an aimless thug who hated his life and himself. He regrets his actions in Akatsuki, but they weren't worse than anything he was doing before, and being in Akatsuki introduced him to new friends and a new purpose he never would have otherwise been able to find.

Combatants Will Be Dispatched!: In Book 5 of the series Lady Viper becomes Demon Lord after the harsh defeat of her people and the death of her father at the hands of an alliance between the Lawful/Good Kingdom of Grace and an offplanet supervillain organization named Kisaragi. She takes careful note of the fact that the Kingdom of Grace treats orcs as farm animals while the Kisaragi Organization seems to respect nonhumans and has a number of "beastmen" in positions of authority. With these things in mind she makes an unconditional surrender to Kisaragi and asks that her people be taken in and protected. Kisaragi assents and makes her their fourth Supreme Leader.

Cobra Kai offers an in-depth look at this trope. Johnny Lawrence is more of an Anti-Hero than a villain, but nonetheless wins a lot of followers simply by helping kids whom the rest of the world is content to ignore or bully. John Kreese outright weaponizes the trope with Tory Nichols and with Johnny's own son Robby Keene, deliberately going out of his way to offer them kindness and support when he knows they are emotionally unstable.
