Fire is cool, and fire is dangerous. So setting the scenery on fire during an action scene can emphasize both coolness and danger, the second because Evil Is Burning Hot or there is a sort of Catastrophic Countdown. In animation if actual fire is not needed, instead background may be painted in various shades of orange and black to represent fire and smoke. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })This is a super trope for Battle Amongst the Flames and Heroic Fire Rescue, and a sister trope to Incendiary Exponent which is about setting on fire the characters themselves. Can also be used (but not always) when heroes are escaping from Collapsing Lair as an actual reason of the said collapse. Big Badass Battle Sequence also may involve a lot of burning stuff, especially if an army is Storming the Castle and uses Arrows on Fire. Or, if the assault is successful and transforms into Rape, Pillage, and Burn or Scorched Earth, it obviously has this too in form of soldiers running across the settlement and throwing torches onto the buildings. Compare Infernal Background and Lethal Lava Land where the fire is also a big part of background, but it does not actually destroy things. "Watching Troy Burn" and "The Ruins I Caused" scenes contain the same amounts of burning scenery, but it's seen from the outside, and they also can follow the battle/escape sequence. In Bambi: the titular character among with a lot of other animals has to run away from forest fire which is set accidentally by group of hunters. The sequel also has a chase with orange-and-black background which is set presumably at sunset.

In Rocket Knight Adventures, the third part of Stage 1 takes place in King El Zebulos' castle, which is partially on fire due to being under attack by a giant robotic spider that Sparkster fights at the end of the stage. There's even an auto-scrolling section in the stage where Sparkster has to dodge the fire as it tries to shoot him.

Darkest Dungeon has an update named "Everything burns". Its main feature is adding a random event where the Brigands attack the Hamlet, and while you are fighting them (including Vvulf himself), on background everything burns. And if you ignore that mission, the Brigands will remove some of building upgrades.

Worldof Warcraftlikes this quite a bit. There are several instances of it, and even one heroic version. In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, the red dragons burn a field full of corpses to prevent them from being raised as undead. In the most recent expansion, it was decidedly non-heroic. The Night Elves built their capital on a giant magical tree, which gets burned down by the new leader of the Horde. Fans are divided on whether this action makes her crazy evil or whether there was some greater purpose to it. There is also an instance of this trope applied to an entire city: Strattholme. The burning happens in Warcraft III but in Wo W it is still (illogically) on fire. The Midsummer festival makes this trope the focus of the holiday. There's a character who goes around setting things on fire, and players have to try and put out the fires. There are fire-themed toys, cosmetics and such to go along with.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade has a scene where Indy and his father are tied up together in chairs and they try to escape using a lighter. Unfortunately, the father drops the lighter and starts a fire in the room. After a cut to other characters, we see that the entire room is ablaze. They end up taking refuge in the only part of the room not on fire: the fireplace.
