When a character tries to be dramatic and fails miserably. Similar to Narm, but in a Failed Attempt at Drama, though the character is trying to be dramatic, the humor is intentional on the writer's part. See also Invoked Trope, when a character actively tries to make tropes appear in "real" life. But since it's a failed attempt, it will often be met with a Surprisingly Realistic Outcome or a Lampshade Hanging. Compare Bathos and Anti-Climax. See Failed Dramatic Exit when this trope overlaps with The Exit Is That Way. Contrast with The Comically Serious for when a character hilariously succeeds in staying dramatic during an otherwise lighthearted or comedic scene. May take the form of Inner Thoughts, Outsider Puzzlement. See also Negated Moment of Awesome, which may be used more dramatically, and Failed Attempt at Scaring, where Horror falls flat. |

Pokémon Detective Pikachu: Lucy introduces herself in a bombastic way suitable to noir films, standing on a stairwell with a bright light behind her and implying she knows a lot about what's going on. Except Tim is weirded out because the bright light makes it hard to see her and he has no idea what she's talking about — he hasn't even heard a hint about conspiracies yet. In the end, her act falls apart when she admits that rather than a seasoned reporter, she's an intern who writes meaningless fluff pieces like "Top 10 Cutest Pokémon". Lucy again when she meets Tim in the bar. She sits in a booth adjacent to him, tells him to act natural, and then tries to pass him a folder without looking. She drops it, they bonk heads, and she finally just sits with him normally. |

Arrow: Felicity Smoak is hauled in for questioning after Detective Quentin Lance discovers she's been helping the Hood. On being ushered into the interrogation room, Felicity refuses to take a seat, only to meekly sit down when Quentin shuts the door loudly. When Nyssa of the League of Assassins turns up to kidnap Thea Queen, Roy Harper does a fancy flip off the roof of a car to defend her, only to instantly go down from a tranquilizer dart. Though Thea admits to being impressed afterwards. Flashback scenes show that Oliver Queen's initial attempts at being a badass archer were less than impressive—he repeatedly misses when firing arrows, fails to break the glass in his first Super Window Jump, and falls off a roof and gets tangled up in wires while Roof Hopping. |

The Simpsons: Mr. Burns announces that the church's revenues have increased 1073% and that he intends to keep it all for himself and throws a smoke bomb on the ground. When the smoke clears he is still fumbling with the door handle, so he just gives up and throws the money to the church council. In "Homer to the Max", Homer is teased because of a buffoonish TV character with his own name. He goes to the show's producers and begs them to "please leave my dignity!" His impassioned plea is undercut when he walks face-first into a cactus on his way out. Later in the same episode, Homer's co-workers are watching him work in the hopes that he will do something stupid and entertaining. He looks back at them and says, "Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you gentlemen, but you seem to have me confused with a character in a fictional show." He then proceeds to knock over a fondue pot on the console and causes unspecified (but presumably very serious) problems in other cities' power plants. In a third scene in the same episode, Homer's friends at Moe's Bar mock him. He attempts to leave in a huff and flings his scarf over his shoulder — it catches in a fan on the ceiling and whirls him around like a rag doll then flings him out the door. In "The Twisted World of Marge Simpson", Fat Tony forces Marge to pull over and tries to reach in to pull out her car keys, only for Marge to have to instruct him how to do it. In "Lisa's Wedding", where Lisa receives a vision of her future from a fortune-teller; the fortune-teller tries this with a smoke-bomb after Lisa objects to her vision, but when the smoke clears is left sitting there, a bit nonplussed, as if she actually expected to just disappear into thin air. In "Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish", Mr. Burns tries to storm out of the Simpson's home but isn't strong enough to toss the furniture, so Smithers does it for him. Homer tries to reason with Mr. Burns, who just tells him to "shut up and wreck something", so he does. In "Mother Simpson", Mr. Burns decides to attack the Simpson house with an army tank, and plays a recording of "Ride of the Valkyries". The music goes for a second before it cuts to "Waterloo" by ABBA, which Smithers admits to taping over. In "Last Exit to Springfield", after Burns returns Homer after abducting him to negotiate the employees' contract, he threatens to crush him, flies off in his helicopter and delivers an Evil Laugh... only to immediately fall out of it and badly injure himself. The next scene sees him being flown away via an air ambulance as he once again threatens him. |

Spider-Man: No Way Home: Dr. Strange botches a cool flying entrance when he slips over snow on the landing. The MCU Spider-Man tries to boast that he has more credentials than the Raimi-verse and Webb-verse Spider-Men because he was a member of The Avengers. His boast falls flat because The Avengers don't exist in the other two Spider-Men's universes, so they have no idea what he is talking about and then assume from the name that it's a band. |

Kung Fu Panda: Shown when Shifu tries to give Po the Dragon Scroll in the first movie. Clearly, Shifu imagined it as a deep, respectful, reverent moment. He clearly did not imagine it with an overeager fanboy who couldn't even get the scroll open. This trope is a Running Gag with Po because he's an Ascended Fanboy. Po knows just how a kung fu hero should act, but often runs headlong into Surprisingly Realistic Outcomes. The most hilarious example is during the climax of Kung Fu Panda 2, when Po stands on the top of a building wearing a long, flowing cape, and attempts to deliver a Badass Boast to Lord Shen. Unfortunately, since he's so far away, Shen can't hear a word he's saying and neither can anyone else. Shortly afterwards, Po tries to hurl his hat at a chain, believing that with his kung-fu skills, he can turn the hat into a Deadly Disc. It doesn't work. Shen himself has moments of this. He is seen practicing his villainous monologue for when he finally meets Po, only to have the panda interrupt the actual speech with a very casual "Hey, how's it goin'?" See also: |

Harry Potter: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: When Hermione verifies Nicolas Flamel's work in alchemy, she dramatically whispers to Harry and Ron that Flamel made the Philospher's Stone. The two react with confusion, as neither of them have heard of the Stone before. The narration even notes that "this didn't have quite the effect she'd expected." Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Professor Trelawney having predicted Harry's death during Dinivation, the third year Gryffindors are very subdued during Transfiguration and barely react when McGonagall turns into a cat and back. Once the prediction of death is mentioned to her, McGonagall defuses the claim by explaining that Trelawney has predicted a student's death every year she's been teaching at the school and none of them have perished yet. |

Arrested Development: The wind keeps Gob from throwing a letter into the ocean. Similarly, during the time Gob becomes the company president, he tries to fire Michael and call security on him, but can't figure out how to use the phone and has to be directed by Michael. Later, prosecuting attorney Wayne Jarvis tries to inform Michael that Gob has been arrested in Iraq by turning on the TV, clearly hoping for a Coincidental Broadcast. Said coincidence fails to materialize, and Wayne and Michael has to wait through 20 minutes of unrelated news before the story of Gob's arrest finally comes on. |

Happens a lot in The Dresden Files. Ghost Story has a flashback detailing a teenaged Harry sticking up a gas station. The narration from present-day Harry makes sure to deflate as much drama out of the moment as possible, such as noting that the paper bag he'd stuffed over his hand so he could pretend that he had a gun when performing force magic actually had mayonnaise on the inside, which constantly distracted and grossed him out. Speaking of Ghost Story, He-Who-Walks-Behind is initially quite terrifying and acting quite grandstanding when assaulting a teenaged Harry, but even he, an Eldritch Abomination older than written tongue, can only give a baffled Flat "What" when Harry responds to his "The Reason You Suck" Speech by quoting Pee-Wee Herman. |

Discworld: In The Light Fantastic, Galder Weatherwax is put out when he suggests the wizards perform the Rite of Ashk-Ente, and rather than the wizards reacting with horror and shock, they just go "yeah, good idea." Then Death himself ruins the moment when summoned, since summoning the personification of death is a teeny bit underwhelming when he shows up holding a cocktail. In Mort, Death's epic arrival at the apprentice fair is ruined by a spot of ice. In The Last Hero, when the Silver Horde arrive at Dunmanifestin, Cohen strikes a dramatic pose and declaims "Behold, the citadels of the gods!" Then Caleb replies "Yes, well, we can see it. Is there something wrong with your back?" and the bard asks if he can replace "citadels" with "temples" in the saga because it has a better rhythm. In Monstrous Regiment, Lord Rust attempts to make a dramatic exit after the Ins-and-Outs refuse his offer. Unfortunately, the rest of his delegation doesn't have the proper dramatic timing. In Equal Rites, Granny Weatherwax's dramatic entrance to the Unseen University great hall is ruined when the door bounces back and hits her in the knee. Guards! Guards!: The Supreme Grand Master of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night and his attempts to conduct their affairs with proper ceremony run into a snag when one overblown request is met with a casual "yup". In Making Money, Pucci attempts to make a sweeping entrance to the Royal Bank after Moist introduces his new dollar bills, but Moist internally notes that sweeping entrances like hers take planning. The series-spanning Running Gag wherein Lord Vetinari will instruct someone, "Look out the window and tell me what you see," only to have problems, such as someone who comically misses the point ("a dog watching a man take a leak in an alley"), or uncooperative weather ("Fog.") In Hogfather Ridcully points dramatically upwards as he declares "To the laundry!" The dramatic effect of this is already questionable, but it gets worse when the other wizards first remind him the laundry is in the cellars, and then worry if Mrs Whitlow will make a fuss about them being there. (They eventually remember she's on holiday, at which point Ridcully says "We certainly don't take orders from any kind of housekeeper" and tries the "To the laundry!" line again.) In The Last Continent, Ponder Stibbons suddenly realises what's wrong with Mono Island and exclaims "There's only one of everything!" He thinks it's the sort of line that should be met with a shocked pause as everyone takes in the implications. followed by comments like "Good lord, he's right!" Brooklyn Nine-Nine: In the pilot episode, Santiago is taunting Peralta for being stuck on desk duty, since it will probably cause him to lose a bet the two have made. In "Stakeout", Amy and Gina react poorly to the way they are depicted in a children's story that Terry has written for his daughters. Terry finally gets fed up with them and yells at them over how silly they're being. Unfortunately, they're in an elevator and Terry doesn't hit the button for the floor he wants until after he's finished, meaning that — as Gina lampshades — instead of being able to storm off impressively the second the doors open, he instead has to hang around with them in awkward silence until they reach his floor. |

Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has quite a few moments where this happens, what with him being The Comically Serious against the excitable child Sonic and the over-the-top villain Eggman. The most prominent moment happens after the climax, where he dramatically states Super Sonic is no longer the hedgehog the Wachowskis once knew, to which Sonic uses his reality-warping powers to summon... a chili dog. American Dad!: Stan shouts "I'm the one who made the decisions that kept this family on track for twenty years. I deserve a little respect!" and storms off into the pantry by mistake. In "Iced, Iced Babies", Roger is angry at the Smiths for not taking him seriously and tells them he's "more than just a clown", right before slipping on a discarded magazine, hitting the wall, spilling all the silverware, pulling on the tablecloth and having the food fall onto him. |

Marvel Cinematic Universe: The Avengers: Loki responds to Tony's speech with a dramatic one-liner and a brainwashing... only for his staff to bounce off the Arc Reactor in Tony's chest. Loki's on the receiving end of this towards the end, when he begins a very dramatic and vainglorious speech about how all-powerful he is. Unfortunately, the person he tries delivering it to is the Hulk, who just picks him up mid-rant and smacks him around the room like a rag-doll. Iron Man 3: A captive Tony knows that his Mark 42 suit is on the way, and tries to set it up for a dramatic entrance... but doesn't time it right the first time. Or the second. In the final battle against Killian and his goons, Tony summons the Mark 42 again and dramatic music swells as it flies in, only for it to hit a railing and fall to pieces. A Running Gag in Guardians of the Galaxy: Starting when Quill introduces himself as the notorious outlaw Star-Lord, only to find no-one knows who he is. When the team meets with the Collector, Quill dramatically presents the Orb to him and drops it, complete with the music cutting off suddenly. And ending when Quill interrupts the Big Bad's Evil Gloating by challenging him to a dance-off. The gag continues in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: With gems such as High Priestess Ayesha's Big Entrance being spoiled by a carpet snag, a thug's threatening demeanor being spoiled by his chosen alias of "Taserface", and the sudden appearance, mid-climactic battle, of Pac-Man. In the midst of the final battle, the camera goes into the standard Marvel Hero Shot, with the main heroes clustered together in bold poses. As the music swells, a chunk of space-fighter debris comes from off-screen and bowls Mantis over. Thor: Ragnarok makes this a Running Gag right from the start. In the prologue, Surtur tries to make a big speech about how destroying Asgard is his destiny, but the chain Thor's dangling from keeps spinning him face away from Surtur, making him wait until Thor spins back around. Shortly afterward, Thor tries to make a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner to Surtur while breaking free from his restraints by summoning Mjölnir to him, but times it wrong and has to wait a few seconds for the hammer to get there. When Valkyrie first appears, she starts to do The Slow Walk down the ramp of her ship... and then falls over, right off the side of the ramp and into the trash, due to being heavily drunk. Hela makes a dramatic speech to the warriors of Asgard, complete with dramatic music swelling, only for Hogun the Grim to undercut her, emphasized by cutting to a wide shot of Hela to show she's standing so far away from them they can barely hear her. Thor throws a heavy ball to bust open the window to the Hulk's suite so he can leave and escape while telling Valkyrie that he's going to head back to Asgard to fight Hela despite the impossible odds "Because that's what heroes do." Only for the ball to rebound from the thick glass, hit Thor in the face mid-sentence, and knock him flat on his ass. Undeterred, he just gets up and finishes the sentence, then busts the window with his body instead. In the climax of the film, Bruce leaps off the Grandmaster's ship to take down Fenris as the Hulk... except he doesn't transform and lands face-first on the Bifrost, which probably would have been fatal if he didn't finally transform a few seconds later.note This is a Call-Back to The Incredible Hulk, except in that one, the scene wasn't Played for Laughs. Avengers: Endgame: Toward the end of the climactic battle, Thanos reclaims the Infinity Gauntlet, declares "I am inevitable.", and snaps his fingers, causing... a tiny metallic click. He then discovers that Iron Man has the Infinity Stones. |

Arc Corp: Ozpin reveals to Blake that Faunus are anomalies in Chapter 18. Since he says this right in the middle of explaining why he refuses to help an endangered Jaune, something that Blake cares about far more than anything else at that moment, she tells him point-blank she couldn't give a crap about his Hannibal Lecture. It's rendered moot even further several chapters later when Jaune reveals that Ozpin's declaration was an exaggeration: Faunus are descended from an anomalous being, but aren't anomalies themselves. When trying to take Blake to task about leaving the White Fang, Sienna Khan asks Jaune what he thinks about his employee being a former terrorist. Unfortunately for her, he already knows and doesn't care, so his resultant shrug totally knocks the wind out of her sails, much to Blake's delight. |

Birds of Prey: Helena Bertinelli is trying to be a dramatic revenge killer, and while she's got the killing part down, she's having a lot more trouble with the dramatic part. At one point she asks a man a dramatic question after she's shot him in the throat, in another she awkwardly barges in on a Mêlée à Trois and then meekly tries to leave. It's to the point that no one even knows she's supposed to be "the Huntress" (calling her "the Crossbow Killer" instead) because every time she tells anyone her name, she is interrupted or the person she told dies soon anyway. She successfully gives her name once, and even then she let the dramatic pause drag out way too long.

Mass Effect 2: A krogan who has the drop on Shepard starts a rant about how he's defeated Shepard and his clan will rule Tuchanka. If the player takes a Renegade interrupt that pops up during the speech, Shepard fires a single shot from his/her sidearm, which then causes him to mock Shepard for missing and proving how incompetent and overrated s/he is. He fails to notice the now-leaking gas line Shepard was aiming at until Shepard helpfully points it out just before it explodes. One of his guards does notice it and starts backing up. Renegade prompts allow this to happen a few other times. In another noticeable instance during Miranda's loyalty mission, a group of mercenaries who have Shepard, Miranda, and the third member of the group at gunpoint and their leader will go on at length about how he's giving them chance to walk away before he's forced to hurt them. Hit the prompt in the middle of the speech and Shepard effortlessly takes him out and Miranda shoots the cable of a cargo crate overhead which lands and causes an explosion dispatching the majority of the mercs. Paranatural: This is like a second language in Mayview. The actual moments of dramatic spectacle are usually built up to with a string of cack-handed failures. Mr Spender is particularly prone to this. Whether it's jumping off a roof dramatically and hurting his ankle, delivering cool one-liners that lead directly into doomed plans, or launching into monologues that nobody can hear because he's looking away from them, Mr Spender's attempts to be impressive fail 95% of the time...but then there's the remaining 5%. Ed is vulnerable to it, too. The Student Council's plan to deal with Jeff, who has gone berserk and gained super-strength, during chapter 5 involves meticulous planning and Serge doing a front-flip... at which point, instead of using it as wind-up, he lands and does a normal throw. And that's on the higher end of Giovanni's competence; during the Museum arc, he managed such feats as "kicking a pot plant to show off and hurting his foot" and "spinning around so fast that his Dramatic Cape smacks him in the face". |

Drake & Josh: When they have an argument and Josh trips on his way out of the room. "I may have tripped, but that does not diminish the impact of this exit!" The scene is referenced again in a later episode when a crappy TV show is made about Drake and Josh expies Drew and Jerry. Drake and Josh watch a scene of the Drew and Jerry Show, and in it, the Jerry character says "I may have stumbled, but that does not lessen the significance of this departure!" This prompts Josh to wonder why they made Jerry such a dork, only to realize the reason and hang his head in shame. |

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Heidegger confronts the heroes via a hologram and boasts that his new robot, Airbuster, will be the instrument of their destruction. Suddenly, one of his men informs him that Airbuster is still under construction and is only 60% done. He complains that his awesome moment was ruined, especially since they are on TV. Since they are on TV, Barret attempts to address the people of Midgar about Shinra's crimes. Tifa and Cloud point out that Shinra would obviously cut the audio. In the "Intermission" DLC, Yuffie does this a lot. In her first scene, she gives an introductory speech to Avalanche, only to find no one there, then she falls off her perch. When she does find them, she gives the same speech, causing them to stare at her awkwardly. When she reveals her identity to some Shinra grunts, she starts coughing from her own smoke bomb and falls off her perch. |

Kamen Rider: Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: Taiga usually tries his best to maintain a bad guy reputation with, besides other things, with dramatic villainous speeches and one-liners. While valiant, his efforts are usually ruined by Nico piping in with some moments killers, e.g. the time he had an ominous monologue about Emu in a dark room of his base before Nico comes in and flicks on the lights. Kamen Rider Zi-O: Woz is about to go on another grandiose boast and dramatic reading from his book of future events. Then Tsukasa reaches over and slams the book shut, cutting him off. |

The Office: When Michael wants to tell Andy about Dwight and Angela just as he is leaving for New York to make it dramatic, but the distance between the front door and his car forces him to stall for time. "I do not have much time... car's all the way over there... to tell you what I have to tell you. And just bear in mind when I say... say these things, that... are bad things... that you hear... in your ears... this is something that I, if I were you, that I wouldn't want to hear..." Andy, having been fired by his hated boss Robert California, engineers a buyout from David Wallace where he would get his job back and Robert would be ousted. To set up the reveal for this coup, he first pretends to be down and out and desperate, dressing in shabby clothes, reeking of alcohol, and begging for work. When he finally turns around and reveals his triumph, however, it completely falls flat because everyone just thinks he's drunkenly hallucinating, and when the truth is finally confirmed, everyone's too concerned with their own jobs to care about Andy. (Robert, meanwhile, negotiates a generous severance package and it's implied that he's leaving on a sex tour of Europe.) |

The King of Queens: Averted and lampshaded when Carrie angrily storms out of her office and the elevator arrives as soon as she presses the button rather than leaving her standing around waiting. Speaking of elevators, there's also a scene in the episode "Strike Too" where Doug and Carrie have an argument over whether or not Doug's union strike is having a negative effect on him. Doug angrily walks into the elevator behind them and press the button to go down; however, the elevator does not go down immediately. To make matters worse, when the elevator is finally about to close, another man presses the button to get in. Doug is left staring at Carrie, who is trying her best not to laugh. In the episode "Strike Out", after Doug and Deacon find out that their union met their demands and the strike is ending, they tell Arthur, who then accuses their union of selling them out. Deacon tells Arthur that they got an 8% pay increase. Arthur then replies with this: |

DC Extended Universe: SHAZAM!: Before their final confrontation, Shazam and Sivana face off at a distance while hovering over the city. Sivana starts delivering a supervillain rant... but Shazam can't hear one word of his "big evil-guy speech" because he's too far away and there's too much background noise. |

Sadlygrove is a repeat offender. One of the most drawn-out examples is certainly during the first Gobbowl arc, after the start of the second quarter-time. Grovy seizes the gobball to everyone's surprise and runs, along with very uplifting music, a dramatic echo of Ruel's earlier psych-up speech, and Split-Screen Reaction of everybody else... and he scores! Ratchet & Clank: The Thug Leader in Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando often engages in this, usually coupled with Metaphorgotten: In the same game, at Maktar Resort the Disc-One Final Boss sends Ratchet a transmission showing that they have Clank in captivity on Endako. The thief threatens Ratchet that if he doesn't return to his own galaxy they'll do to Ratchet what they're about to do to Clank and hits a green button, but nothing happens (mostly because Clank's too short for the torture device to actually hurt him). The thief awkwardly hits the red button next to it and electrifies Clank, knocking him out cold. Recurring villain Dr. Nefarious has an unfortunate glitch in his system that leads him to occasionally freeze up and start broadcasting soap opera reruns. At one time, this occurs just as he is about to press the Big Red Button that will send Ratchet and Clank to their deaths, forcing the duo to sit around awkwardly listening to terrible dialogue ("You're just a lonely man, Lance, boarding the lonely train on its way to lonely town.") until an embarrassed mook finally activates the death trap himself. |

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: During her time in Numenor, Galadriel tries to pursue Miriel to give her a small army to fight the Orcs in the Southlands. Seeing that she cannot convince Miriel, Galadriel disrespect her and demands to speak with the true ruler of Numenor, Miriel's father. Seeing Galadriel's self-righteousness, Miriel asks her with who's authority is Galadriel speaking to the queen herself in such manner. Galadriel's answer "there is a tempest in me!" looks at first to be this Badass Boast line during her dramatic clash with Queen Miriel, only for next shot to show Galadriel being in the dungeons for sedition. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks: Adagio Dazzle regularly indulges in some dramatic evil gloating... only to have Sonata Dusk ruin it about every time by spouting something stupid. Twilight and friends' first attempt at invoking the Magic of Friendship is a drawn-out example. Even the music is on it, rising dramatically as they lock hands together and Twilight exclaims "Friendship is magic!"... and then puttering out as nothing happens, and everybody looks at them like they're crazy. The film demonstrates that Trixie's human counterpart is just as bad as her pony self at making dramatic exits, twice attempting to do a Smoke Out and both times being spotted by Pinkie Pie after she runs away. The second time, she even slips and falls behind the bleachers. |

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: After she's revealed to have Feet of Clay in "Boast Busters", the Great and Powerful Trixie attempts to do a Smoke Out exit, but once the smoke clears we can see her running off. After Trixie's return and Heel–Face Turn in "Magic Duel", she departs in the same way, except she also trips and lands on her face. During the pageant in "Hearth's Warming Eve", Princess Platinum (Rarity) haughtily leaves a meeting between the three pony tribes, but the effect is somewhat ruined when she puts her crown on upside-down in her haste to leave. In "Marks for Effort", on cue from Twilight, Spike brings three honorary diplomas on a cushion in what is obviously meant to be a solemn moment... except he just trips and the scrolls roll at the hooves of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Spike then gets up, looking sheepish, while Twilight is embarrassed. |

"The Wedding of River Song": Something to this effect occurs when the Doctor tries to get Amy to remember the pre-Time Crash universe, only to realize by the stuff in her office that she already does. "The Day of the Doctor": The Tenth Doctor is chasing a shapeshifter, thinks he's found it, and begins threatening it... only he's talking to a harmless little rabbit. He bravely tries to recover. In Primal (2019), Spear tensely faces off against a group of bear-riding vikings. Their bears sniff the air restlessly, spooked by something unseen, a flock of birds fly away, titanic footsteps make tiny pebbles shake around them, and Fang leaps into view on a nearby rooftop, roaring ferociously. Then she falls through the roof.

Nanbaka: Gokuu interviews the new blood in Building 13 to get tragic, grizzled backstories for how they ended up getting caught. When the prisoners tell him their decidedly anticlimactic reasons, he's visibly bummed out. According to some later evidence, he's absolutely right. Another chapter has him try looking around Nanba to show how dark and serious the place has become, only to find everything as wacky as it usually is. Again he gets bummed out, but just like last time, the end of the chapter proves him right. |

Ultraman Z has this as a staple of its comedy: In Episode 1, as Z is not familiar with Earth languages, his attempt to come of as serious when telling Haruki the latter is already dead and must bond with him to fight falls flat due to messing up Japanese Honorifics and his Verbal Tic of adding "Ultra-" to nouns. He sheepishly admits to Haruki that "Earthese" is hard. In Episode 11, Haruki loudly introduces STORAGE's newest Humongous Mecha, King Joe STORAGE Custom, and gushes about its specifications and functions, only for Captain Hebikura to interrupt him by asking why he's saying things that everyone already knew. At the end of Episode 16, Alien Barossa II ominously descends from the sky to the tune of "Night on Bald Mountain", only to break his back upon landing at the beginning of the next episode. In the finale, Z attempts to dramatically fly away as usual after defeating the final kaiju, but runs out of energy mid-flight and falls to the ground. |

Occurs twice in succession in The Darkness for some Bathos. The corrupt Chief of Police gets a power drill ready to drill into Jackie's head for some Cold-Blooded Torture, complete with the one-liner "There may be some discomfort"... and the drill comes unplugged. The Chief walks over, plugs it back in a little closer, and tries again. The second attempt works, as the drill messes Jackie's face up to hell and back, but then the drill jams. This prompts the frustrated chief to yell "Chinese piece of SHIT!" and throw the drill away, leaving his henchmen to try and keep Jackie intimidated while he fiddles with the broken drill.

In the Firefly episode "The Train Job", one of Niska's henchmen delivers a Badass Boast in which he promises to hunt Mal down and kill him, no matter how far he runs. Mal simply kicks him into the engine intake, which turns him into pulp. Also invoked later on in "War Stories", when Niska tries to give Zoe a Sadistic Choice: he has Mal and Wash captive, and agrees to let one go while the other will continue to be tortured. He starts to make a dramatic speech about how she must make an impossible decision, and Zoe interrupts him by immediately picking her husband. Subverted, in that Niska is angry about having his moment ruined, and takes it out on Mal by slicing his ear off. |

From How I Met Your Mother: One of Barney's coworkers quits spectacularly while his boss is chewing him out during a meeting, shouts to everyone that he just made a load of money in the stock market and doesn't need this job anymore, and then gets up on the conference table yelling "Here's what I think of this stupid company!" and attempts to pee on it... but has a shy bladder and can't get the stream going. His meek "Could everyone turn away for a minute?" and everyone's polite acquiescence makes it even lamer. Robin goes on a bender and wakes up in a strange hotel room. When she asks where they are, Barney angrily responds that he'll show her where they are and dramatically flings open the curtains. This reveals nothing because the view is blocked by another building. |

Breaking Bad: "Problem Dog" sees Walt set his car on fire and do an Unflinching Walk away... except the car takes too long to explode, forcing Walt to sit on the ground after reaching a safe distance and wait for the kaboom. Much more dramatically, later in the series, in "Granite State," Walt tries to intimidate Saul Goodman into helping him plot revenge on the Neo-Nazis for stealing his money and murdering his brother-in-law Hank Schrader. While walking up to Saul, Walt devolves into a coughing fit, and Saul steps out of Walt's life for good soon afterwards to go on the run. |

Buffyverse: "Prophecy Girl": "When he wakes up, tell him... I dunno. Think of something cool. Tell him I said it." When the earthquake stops, the Master, in mid-rant, asks the Anointed One in an aside, "Whaddaya think? 5.1?" In "Graduation Day Part 2", Oz insists on a moment of silence after the school blows up. Everyone eventually gets up and leaves. "... And we're done." From "Doppelgangland", Willow, trying to be angry and assertive, has to tell Buffy "I'm storming off...doesn't really work if you come with me." as she walks off in a huff. In "Out of My Mind", Spike resolves to find a way to remove his inhibitor chip, and promises himself that when he does, he'll "make Buffy's neck my chalice". Immediately after he falls into an open grave. (Buffy does the same while arguing with Angel in "Some Assembly Required"). Spike has a similar scene in Angel episode "In the Dark" when his rant is cut off because he's walked under a hole in the roof and the sunlight has set his hair on fire. And again, when he attempts to deliver a threatening monologue to an unsuspecting Buffy in "Wild at Heart", only to be tasered and dragged off by the Initiative, mid-speech. In "Gone", the Trio attempt to make a dramatic escape from Buffy under the cover of a smoke bomb, but they can't get the door open in time, and the smoke clears to reveal them still fiddling with it before they finally manage to get out. It happens again in "Seeing Red" — after Buffy has defeated Warren and Andrew, the former escapes using a Jet Pack. Andrew reveals that he has a jet pack as well and tells Buffy that it's not over, and they will meet again...before jetting into an overhanging roof and knocking himself unconscious. In "A New Man", Ethan Rayne spends a few moments doing the usual vaguely ominous speech to an empty room after Giles leaves... only for Giles to hear him as he leaves and come back. In "Older And Far Away", Halfrek tries to teleport away dramatically (twice) but her own spell keeps her in the house. In "Lessons", Buffy is telling Dawn how dangerous the vampire burrowing out of his grave is, when the vampire interrupts to ask for their help as he's stuck. In the pilot episode of Angel, Doyle tries to come to Cordelia's aid by dramatically driving Angel's car through the gates leading to a mansion. The attempt fails as the car simply crashes into them and stops due to the gates being too tough. In "Unleashed", Spike launches into a story about the time he had an epic battle against a werewolf, only for Fred to inform that Angel killed one effortlessly with a pen. |

Frasier: When Frasier tells Roz that Bulldog only wants her to produce his show to get her into bed. Her sprained ankle and crutches cause her dramatic exit to be painfully slow, and it only gets worse when she reaches the door, tells him that she is out of his life for good, and realizes she has to turn back and get her purse. Also when Frasier made a big dramatic speech to his building's board about how they're all a bunch of petty tyrants, and as he leaves, his briefcase opens and spills his papers onto the floor, forcing him to pick them up and ruining his dramatic exit. Also after Daphne has an argument with Martin and Frasier about something. She tells them off and storms off to her room, but as Frasier points out to Martin, "That would have been very effective — if her room were on that side of the apartment." Followed by a mortified Daphne slowly slinking her way back across the hallway to her room, refusing to make eye contact with them. Another that occurs off-screen with Niles storming out of Maris' mansion after an argument, and his failed attempt to close the massive front doors. In a first season episode, Lilith shows up having found a note Frasier left for her a year ago asking to get back together. When Frasier explains that he no longer feels that way Lilith attempts to excuse herself so she can leave with dignity but the straps of her purse get caught in the door. She has to sheepishly ring the doorbell to free it. |
