When a fanfiction writer, or group of writers, do several (not just a few, several) fics for the same fandom taking place in the same continuity as each other, that's a Fan Verse. Another variant of this is when you have a few stories that utilize a popular Fandom-Specific Plot and become so well-loved themselves that several other writers treat them as a framework from which they base their own stories on, creating their own Recursive Fanfiction. The original fanfic writer may or may not then acknowledge these as being part of their continuity. Any fanfic that has a copious amount of worldbuilding counts a lot toward this label as well. If they keep it coherent and get enough interest, Fan Verse writers can single-handedly influence Fanon, possibly to the point of being canonized as an Expanded Universe. Compare Shared Universe. |

Star Trek Online: The War of the Masters was a sprawling Shared Universe that developed on the official forums during what became known as "The Great Content Drought".note A period of about two years before the release of the Legacy of Romulus expansion where no new content came out due to the game being starved for funds by its then-publisher Atari. Very much Darker and Edgier than the canon game, it posited Eldritch Abominations called the Good Masters as threats, along with political corruption in the Federation that led to a cluster of planets along the Klingon border declaring independence. Naturally it ended up very much Outdated by Canon once storyline development resumed. Bait and Switch (STO) is a smaller 'verse of mostly short fiction written mainly by StarSwordC, with later contributions from worffan101 and takeshi6. It began to diverge quite strongly from the official storyline starting at the Iconian War, including among other things a story arc dealing with a resurgent Cardassian True Way insurgency that declared itself a new Cardassian Empire. |

Channel Awesome fandom tends to be, strangely, a breeding ground for this (and they're mostly Dark Fic for some reason). There's That Guy with the Glasses in Space, Escargoancitizen and Friends, a verse where Linkara is a Vampire Hunter, a Victorian AU, a Hooker!Verse, a verse for their genderswapped doubles, a Hypno!Verse where Insano has brainwashed everyone and an AU where Linkara has snapped because of a creepy obsession with Spoony.

Transcendence AU, in which rather than the actual events of the show's finalenote this AU actually predates "Weirdmageddon" by two years, but accurately predicted Bill's plans, Dipper ends getting possessed as a last-ditch effort by a dying Bill Cipher. Although Dipper is able to fight Bill off and kill him, he fused with the leftovers and became a demon who goes by the name Alcor, albeit one with an unusually strong connection to the physical world and no upper cap on his power level. It also caused Gravity Falls' weirdness to spread out over the world in an event known as the Transcendence. Dipper's demonic upgrade makes him immortal, and he spends the next several million years trying to hold onto his humanity and watching over the descendants and reincarnations of his loved ones, until his suicide after the heat death of the universe. It's a bit unusual in that there's no central fic: rather, there's a blog whose mods are the authorities on what is or isn't canon for the verse (particularly Mod Z, or Zilleniose on Tumblr), but in general the verse's canon is pretty loose and open to contribution from anyone.

The Dangerverse, also for Harry Potter. Started by whydoyouneedtoknow (and yes, that is a The Incredibles reference), the story reimagines the canon. At last count the mainline story was at 1.18 million words and counting. As with the Dumbledore's Armyverse, there are numerous one-shots, missing scenes, and numerous Alternate Universe fics by the author. The Les Misérables fanfic Paris Burning is the root of one of these. There is a fanfic version of the Marvel Universe that puts much more of an emphasis on lesser-known heroes and villains, such as the 1990s superhero Sleepwalker, rather than mainstays such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four or Captain America, who usually guest star in the C-listers' own stories rather than get the main spotlight. Many aspects are also heavily reimagined, such as Gwen Stacy being alive and well as Peter Parker's one true love, and Mary Jane Watson developing her own spider-powers as Spider-Woman, with her own rogues gallery and supporting cast entirely separate from Peter's.

Batman has an epic series known as the Cat Tales universe which some people think of as better than some of the published stuff. It has lots of awesomeness for many characters, but the main thread is attempting to create a realistic romance between Batman and Catwoman without sacrificing any of their characters' awesomeness. This is mixed in with liberal amounts of drama, humor, believable character development, and tons of great action. The first story is A Girl's Gotta Protect Her Reputation. And best of all, the author is still going strong after 54 stories and nine years — the first chapter of the first story was published on March 8, 2001. With regular updates every few weeks, no less! Also has a fair number of sidestories in the same verse co-authored by others, fan-art and its own website, here

The Loud House managed to build one based around the popular (if incredibly controversial) Incest Yay Shipping fandom known as Sin Kids AU, which chronicle the adventures of Lincoln's children fathered with his sisters and/or the various other females in the series, as well as how both generations deal with the fallout of said children, over various fanarts and fanfictions by different authors.

In Naruto fandom, the Lace and Strawberries or Saki-chan Fan Verse, started by Asuka Kureru or Askerian. The basic premise is Sasuke dealing with his issues via cross-dressing as a Gothic Lolita that goes by the name of Saki. Not actually crack. While she has written only three fics in this verse, the number of fan-fan works has possibly reached triple digits, and includes writers such as chibirisu-chan, ice-dark elf, and crazy-toffee.

Daria fanfic has expanded outwards into what's actually known as the ' Daria Expanded Universe ', with such fandom-created characters as Lynn Cullen, Jim Vitale, Pat Hackney VII, Richard Rawlings, Steve the security guard, Julia Carlyle, Michael Fulton, Alfred Phelps, Veronica Morgendorffer and Col. Kyle Armalin (and that's just a partial listing) of Daria Expanded Universe original characters freely interacting with the canon characters. (Daria fans know these folks as if they had been on the show itself.) On the fandom's Wiki, there's actually a listing for the ' Daria Multiverse ', and many of the original characters have Wiki entries and histories as fully fleshed-out as the canon characters.

Thanks to the fact that the canon characters are largely skeleton characters made of tropes specifically to give the fan fic writers more latitude, Touhou Project largely relies upon a collective subconscious understanding of what each character is, with each fan fic author slighly altering the character more in line with their own tastes (such as a violently self-centered Reimu to a just plain ambivalent Reimu), but relying upon the same tacitly agreed-upon traits. A few have proper names and are based on popular or highly-exposed fanwork; these include Walfas's math-joke-heavy Flash cartoons and the action/parody Advent Cirno. There is a minor, infamous (at least on Pooshlmer) 'verse called the 'Soak.

There are several fanfics by the same author with Terinu set in the period prior to the canon storyline, set just after the Varn Dominion's conquest of the Earth, one set in Vulpine Prime's past just prior to their conquest by the Dominion, and a notable crossover with the Season Five Stargate SG-1 team. In the early days of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons (specifically Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM)), several Fandom VIPs, such as Bookshire Draftwood and Dan Drazen, did this. In fact, they did it in such a way that their own verses could theoretically fit into each other's with little difficulty. These Fan Verses got so large and popular that dozens of other writers over the years contributed with episodic stories that could also slip right in, culminating in a pretty massive web with hundreds of connected stories.

The Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers fandom has a couple of its own, started as a continuous series of Fan Fic and often picked up by other authors than the original one. The first one was the series The Adventures Of Gadget Hackwrench which, after the success of the epic hallmark Rhyme and Reason, encouraged Rangerphiles to start writing and sort of launched the Ranger fandom's rich Fan Fic tradition. The most famous example, however, is The Nowakverse. Others are, for instance, Chip Noir Dale's Rescue Rangers or The Midnightverse.

Gravity Falls seems to be a magnet for fan-made alternate universes: Reverse Falls AU, in which Gideon Gleeful and Pacifica Northwest are the heroes and Dipper and Mabel Pines are the villains (with Bill Cipher as their wimpy bound demon servant), with the overall tone being Darker and Edgier. Monster Falls, in which the people of Gravity Falls are some way or another (usually by Bill Cipher's influence) turned into various monsters: Dipper is usually a deer-centaur or faun (also known as "Deerper"), Mabel is either a mermaid or a unicorn-centaur, Grunkle Stan is a gargoyle, Wendy is a werewolf, and so on. Relativity Falls, an age-swap fan 'verse in which young Stanley and Stanford Pines spend the summer with their "Grauntie Mabel" investigating the weird goings-on in Gravity Falls with a teenage Manly Dan and handy-woman Maria Ramirez (Soos's grandmother). They later meet Dipper, who is the Author in this universe. Sailorleo's Reunion Falls, in which Dipper and Mabel were Separated at Birth, and Mabel comes to Gravity Falls to meet her long-lost twin. Other notable features of this AU include an increased role for Grenda and Candy, and some Mabel x Pacifica shipping. The Mystery Farm AU by lemonfordrizzleart stars Stanley and Stanford who run their family farm as it becomes the center of strange activities after a UFO is discovered in the area. |
