A subtrope of Intergenerational Friendship. So, there are two characters who are to be paired up. But there's still something missing. Perhaps they've had too little screen time and chemistry and the audience might feel they are Strangled by the Red String. Or perhaps the author wants to include a fluffy episode with kids, but the couple hasn't progressed to having their own babies yet. The perfect solution is for one of the characters to have a much younger sibling, and the other one to act as Cool Big Sis or Big Brother Mentor (or Parental Substitute, in some cases). If there is a Love Triangle underway, expect the kid to bond with the one who'll be victorious, and if there are troubles with the romance, the kid will play Shipper on Deck.
