Foods that aren't noted in fiction for tasting good, or even tasting bad, but rather for making people fart or burp. Common ones for farting include: Beans, due to a carbohydrate called raffinose, which can cause gas by fermenting in the lower intestine (but usually goes away as the body grows more used to the carbohydrate). Anything with fiber, since fiber is harder to digest and thus might stay in the lower intestine for a long time, making it ferment. Anything spicy, since some people, especially people with IBS (but not exclusive to them), are sensitive to capsaicin, which might manifest as gas. Certain vegetables: Brussels sprouts. Cabbages (particularly sauerkraut). In Japanese media, sweet potatoes have this reputation. Seafood (especially sushi in the west, due in part to xenophobia). Prunes. Common ones for burping include: Any carbonated drink (since the carbon dioxide rises in people's stomachs) Alcohol (compare Alcohol Hic, Alcohol-Induced Idiocy, In Vino Veritas, and Single Malt Vision for other stock effects of alcohol) This means that champagne is all but guaranteed to make you burp. Any character who farts or burps, especially if they're not normally a Gasshole, might blame one of these foods. If someone mistakenly thinks that they or someone else farted, they might think that one of these foods is to blame. And if anyone turns down one of them, they'll usually give a fear of getting gas as a reason. Sometimes, eating one of these foods might even be used to invoke Fartillery. It could also lead to Farts on Fire if eaten by a campfire. Important note: This is about foods that are stereotyped as making people fart or burp. If one particular character has food that makes them fart or burp, but that's not a common stereotype of the food, that better fits Plot Allergy (similar to the distinction between Stock "Yuck!" and Does Not Like Spam). Compare The Food Poisoning Incident for another toilet joke about food. Also compare Warm Milk Helps You Sleep, Fire-Breathing Diner, Onion Tears, and Pepper Sneeze for other stock food effects. Might overlap with Growling Gut if gas is what causes the stomach to growl. |

The Simpsons: One episode has Bart sent to a religious school, where he's asked to recite a psalm and starts the "musical fruit" rhyme. Cut to the teacher chasing Bart with the rest of the class, thinking Bart is a demonic entity. In "Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment", Homer attempts to brew his own alcohol in the basement, and the stills end up combusting. He tries to hide the explosions from Marge by blaming the smoke on "that bean I had for dinner" (note the singular). Barney Gumble is legendary for his tendency to belch a lot, especially since he’s The Alcoholic. |

Camp Lazlo: In the short "The Eternal Flame", Lazlo wins a bean-eating contest. Whenever someone faceplants into their bowl of beans, there's a farting sound effect. After that, Lazlo starts to feel gas bubbling up from inside him and tries to find a private place to let it loose, but he's then forced to light a torch for the victory ceremony. At that point, he finally lets it out - cue the explosion. Lumpus then comments that they really need to stop having the ceremony after these contests, implying this has happened before.

The Powerpuff Girls (1998): Implied in "The Rowdyruff Boys". The Rowdyruff Boys unleash a multicolored smokescreen to disorient the Powerpuff Girls. Butch then states he's glad they had burritos beforehand. This jumpstarts the plot in "Reeking Havoc". Professor Utonium wins a chili cook-off thanks to the Powerpuff Girls spiking his cuisine with Chemical X. We then see various citizens experiencing intestinal distress, and green clouds come out of a few houses' windows. This green cloud then becomes a methane monster. Later, a guy notices the stench cloud and asks his friend if he had cabbage borscht earlier. In "Power Lunch", when the Gangrene Gang raid a convenience store, Grubber guzzles down mass quantities of soda. After the girls accidentally give the Gang superpowers, Grubber gains the ability to emit super-loud belches (implied to be due to all the soda he drank). |

The Powerpuff Girls (2016): In "Deb O'Nair", Buttercup eats a burrito and has Bubbles set her fart on fire with her laser vision to defeat a monster that's attacking the city. In "A Slight Hiccup", Bubbles claims to have never belched before, so she and the other two Powerpuff Girls drink many cans of soda. All this does is give them very powerful hiccups. However, Bubbles does finally belch for the first time in the end, and it saves the day. |

The Loud House: In "A Tale of Two Tables", Lana sings, "Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you—" and then does armpit farts. Later, Lincoln says the same rhyme and farts for real (even shaking the table), which succeeds at annoying his parents so much they send him back to the kids' table. In "Tripped!", Lori gets gas from eating bean chips, resulting in a Visible Odor. A Running Gag throughout the episode is that Lori's family keeps teasing her about having farted in the van. In "Camped!", Lynn is dared to drink a bottle of hot sauce, and it makes her fart... so much so that a nearby moose loses its fur. In "Roughin' It", Clyde and Lincoln eat a can of beans during their camping trip. Clyde later farts and apologizes (though he also states that he doesn't know if it was the beans or the numbness in his lower body that did it), but Lincoln is amused and cuts one as well. In "The Old and the Restless", Pop-Pop farts after he eats chili and jokes that someone must’ve stepped on a frog. In "Come Sale Away", the Loud children drink some soda and have a burping contest during the montage of them being competitive. In "Making the Grade", Lisa quips that she's out of the conversion game, "Except for converting beans to methane!" She proceeds to fart so hard that it shakes the table. |

Blazing Saddles: Has the dubious honor of being the first major Hollywood film to feature fart sounds for this reason. As a parody of Western films, a scene featuring men sitting around a campfire eating fried beans portrays the exaggerated consequences of this, with all of the men farting and burping for a solid 30 seconds straight. When one of the men asks Taggart for more beans, he responds, "I think you've had enough".

Kenny vs. Spenny: One episode has the two protagonists competing over who can blow the biggest fart. Kenny and Spenny change their dietary habits, with the former gorging on his family's chili recipe, while the latter eats beans and brussel sprouts. When Spenny starts falling behind, he assembles a banquet of what he believes to be "the gassiest foods the planet can produce", which includes a variety of peppers, popcorn, cabbage, dry plums, and broccoli. Although his strategy seems to work at first, Kenny tricks him into consuming anti-gas medication, ultimately causing Spenny to lose the competition.

Tex Avery MGM Cartoons: The series liked to do jokes involving radishes making you burp. One example was in The House of Tomorrow where a kitchen appliance is shown that removes the burps from radishes. Another radish example is in "Garden Gopher" where we see a gopher stealing vegetables from a garden. After the gopher eats a radish and burps underground, he holds a sign above ground that reads, "Excuse me". One Screwy Squirrel cartoon has both Squirrel and the dog pursuing him pausing mid-chase for a drink of Coo Coo-Cola, which makes them both burp. |

In one episode, Spiral suggests that everyone in the world could eat a bean sandwich and fart at the same time to change the planet's orbit. Cylindria quips that his idea stinks. In "Cosmic Contest", Pac has too much bean dip and cuts loose with Visible Odor, prompting Cylindria to comment that his flatulence will probably knock everyone out faster than alien invaders. Later, he farts again when he's in a spaceship with Spiral, much to the latter's horror. In "Pac to the Future", Pac's baby counterpart soils his diaper. Betrayus notices the smell and then asks Corporal Hineyheadnote Butt-ler's name before he became a ghost if he had chili again. |
