Any military setting is bound to have at least one person who is Gung Holier Than Thou: a person assigned to leadership role with little, if any, authority. Typically a non-commissioned officer who likely sleeps with a copy of their force's code of conduct under their pillow. Given their relative lack of authority, anyone who is Gung Holier Than Thou is merely an annoyance. Often emphasizes his or her lack of authority with loud voice, insults, yelling, complaining to superiors or representing themselves as specially skilled. They sometimes may resort to bullying or even physical violence to emphasize their role (and lack of genuine authority). A temporary annoyance if only visiting, like Col. Flagg. A Gung Holier Than Thou can become too much of an annoyance and end up Reassigned to Antarctica. This trope is omnipresent in armies based on conscription where young conscript noncoms are assumed to be this way. Gung Holier Than Thou is the Sister Trope to The Neidermeyer - the former is more likely to be a low-ranker such as non-commissioned officer, while the latter is likely to be in a higher position, such as a commissioned officer. The polar opposite is Sergeant Rock. A Drill Sergeant Nasty may act like Gung Holier Than Thou, but he has general authority. A subtrope of the Rules Lawyer. Deconstructed when he goes a step too far by engaging in his usual sadistic bullying on a recruit who turns out to be the son of an important government official, subsequently being rotated out to the frontlines after having spent most of his career trying to be REMF as a punishment. | |

In the "Toy Soldiers" episode of Space: Above and Beyond, Lt. Herrick straddles the line between this and The Neidermeyer. He does have some authority, as he is in command of a Force Recon platoon, but the men under his command revere him; it's Marines of equal or higher rank that see him for what he is. | |

Lieutenant Nolan from Star Wars: The Bad Batch might be one of most disgusting portrayals of this trope put to screen, being a power-tripping Jerkass who lords his (rather low and unimpressive) rank over the frontline troopers while talking to them like they're brainless robots and purposefully allows one to die as retaliation for said trooper calling out his lack of experience. Predictably, he ends up being shot by one of his own men after stupidly pushing the man too far. | |

Ciaphas Cain: Cain's lifelong ambition is to not be one, something he tries to drill into the commissar cadets he teaches. While commissars are intended to be lead-from-the-front, inspire-the-troops-and-shoot-the-cowards types, overdoing it will likely result in "accidents" suspiciously far from the front lines. His punishments are usually along the lines of latrine duty and floggings, and the soldiers under his commands are more than grateful for it (especially since he also rewards good behavior, like an extra round of ale for the squad that does the best at target practice that week). One of Amberley's henchmen is Simeon, a penal legionnaire sent there after he snapped under pressure and started shooting his own men for not saluting him... during an artillery barrage. Cain shakes his head at the thought, then says that's the reason they have commissars. Amberley then reveals Simeon was the commissar. |
