When a character, either feigning genuine laughter or being obviously sarcastic, pretends to laugh along with other characters, or encourages/threatens them to do so, then abruptly tells them to shut up, in one way or another. The rejection can be a quiet aside, an unexpected tirade or anything in between. Sometimes, this is in concert with a Laugh with Me! moment. Compare Pre-Violence Laughter and contrast Tension-Cutting Laughter. The trope also applies to situations in which somebody finds something that somebody else is saying Actually Pretty Funny, but this amusement isn't changing anybody's mind. The non-laughing version is "No. Just… No" Reaction. The denial/rejection can be a Blunt "No". Compare Last Note Nightmare. |

Control Z: When Gerry shows up at Raúl's party, Pablo calmly asks him to leave because nobody wants to see him after what he did to Luis. His other two friends, DarÃo and Ernesto, sort-of take Pablo's side. Gerry laughs sarcastically and asks if they are kidding, but the three can only respond with silence before Gerry becomes angry and nearly picks a fight with them, which Pablo stops and Gerry leaves stating how "disappointed" he is that they don't trust him anymore.

Used many, many times by Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The laugh rises up into a high pitched, somewhat creepy register, but he loses the exclamation on "No", and goes straight into thunderous shouting. For example, in one episode, Will and Carlton lose Vivian's bracelet by pawning it for a stock investment that quickly tanked (surprisingly, this was Carlton's idea). Phil finds out about this when they're caught stripping to get money to buy back the bracelet, and after they come clean, Phil starts laughing, and the boys join in. When asked by Phil what he should do, Will jokingly replies he should "reward them for their honesty... it worked for The Beav" causing Phil to laugh louder.

There's a very sinister example in The Lives of Others, which is set in communist East Germany. A young Stasi agent in training is telling a (quite funny) joke to some of his friends that could be interpreted as being anti-government. A Stasi captain overhears it, and when the joke is finished, he laughs heartily... and then demands the joke teller's name and rank. And then he says he was just kidding, tells an even more anti-government joke, and leaves the stunned jokester be.

Radio Enfer: Jocelyne tells the teenagers that they are having a day off. They are quite happy about it (except for Germain, who wanted to make his oral presentation for his chemistry class about zinc and cobalt), until she tells them that it's because of a special day she's organizing for the Joy of Life Week. Maria then asks if they couldn't just go to their courses instead, to which Jocelyne replies with this trope. Carl is carrying a garment bag when he comes across Jean-David also carrying a garment bag. Upon realizing this, Jean-David cheerfully tells Carl that they are alike, only for the latter to briefly chuckle and say "No." before leaving. |

The Simpsons "The Bart Wants What it Wants" has this: In "Lisa on Ice": In "Trash of the Titans", Homer becomes sanitation commissioner and has to deal with (actually, ignore) Springfield's garbage crisis. He's about to leave Moe's Tavern when Moe asks him to pay for his drinks. Homer responds with his campaign catchphrase: "Can't someone else do it?" Moe laughs, amused. Homer starts to walk out. Moe cocks his shotgun: "Seriously, give me the money." Inverted in "The Springfield Connection": Marge tells Chief Wiggum that she wants to join the police force. He answers with roaring laughter, seemingly implying that the concept of a female police officer is just ridiculous for him - then his laughing abruptly stops and he welcomes her to the team. And at the end if the episode, this scene gets a reprise, but now with Marge's request to quit her police job. In the Cold Opening for "Treehouse Of Horror VIII", a Fox censor is going over the episode's script, erasing the parts he considers inappropiate. At one point, he laughs at a particularly funny part - before censoring with a "No". |

This happened behind the scenes on MythBusters. They were testing whether certain sugary breakfast cereals are in fact less nutritious than the box they come in. The test involved three groups of mice: a control group (A) being fed standard mouse food, a group (B) being fed sugary cereal, and a group (C) being fed cardboard processed into mouse-food-like pellets. All three groups of mice did fine for most of the week, but by day 5 Jamie noted a difference in the movements of group C compared to the other two. Then everyone left for the weekend. When they returned on Monday, there were no longer three mice in group C. Instead, there was one very fat mouse and two mouse skeletons. When the team showed the footage to Discovery Channel executive types, this was their reaction in a nutshell.

Atop the Fourth Wall: Linkara did this in his reviews of "Doom's IV #2" and "NBComics #1", laughing in response to the sexist jokes in both comics before yelling "This comic sucks!" Likewise, this was his reaction to Keeper saying "Order is restored" in the History of Power Rangers episode on Power Rangers Dino Charge, talking about how preventing the start of the series brought back the dinosaurs. Before that, the HoPR on Power Rangers Samurai sees his rant about Mentor Ji's attitude towards Antonio (triggered by Ji saying Antonio's not fit to be a Ranger because he was self-taught and taking away Antonio's morpher — which Antonio likewise built himself, making it his property and Ji a thief for swiping it) start with Lewis chuckling before he launches into the rant by asking who the hell Ji thought he was for doing that. He was not at all pleased when a police officer in "Marville #2" basically told the main characters that he gets paid for being lazy. After hearing the "joke", he angrily reminded the viewers (and Marville writer Bill Jemas) of how many police officers die every year in the line of duty. In his review of "Marville #5", he takes one look at the cover and sees that Jemas tried to trick the readers into thinking it was a parody comic by including the subtitle "Originville" to justify its made-up backstory for Wolverine: |

Mad Men has a hilariously cryptic example when Bert Cooper asks Duck Phillips, who's up for a job with the company, whom he's voting for. Duck good-naturedly answers that if he says Nixon, Cooper will think he's sucking up, and if he says Kennedy, he'll want to reform him, so he'll say... Nixon. "That's nice to say", Cooper responds with a smile — which abruptly disappears... and then abruptly reappears — and then abruptly disappears again. Duck just stands there looking bewildered until he's led away.

In The Sandman (1989), Lucifer gives up ruling Hell in an early volume, and two angels loyal to God were given the task of managing Hell afterwards. In a volume close to the end, there's a scene where one of those angels, (who completely hates the job) asks Lucifer if he would ever go back to ruling Hell. Lucifer stares wordlessly for a moment before laughing almost hysterically, then he abruptly stops laughing and gives a very deadpan "no".

In the M*A*S*H episode, "Last Laugh", Hawkeye and BJ arrive (drunk) at the Swamp from a court martial caused by a practical joke. As the "friend" who played the trick is leaving in a jeep they loaned him, they get a bill for his antics for $580. They both laugh for a few seconds before Hawkeye abruptly stops and gets mad. However, it's a subversion, as BJ cheerfully explains that the joker will have to walk back to camp in 30 minutes because "the only thing gassed up in that jeep was us!" Another episode has Col. Potter trying to bring a meeting to order when Hawkeye makes a lame joke. Potter, laughing, says "Pierce, sometimes you can be very amusing", and then abruptly stops and says "And then there's now." |

Odd Squad: At the end of "Trials and Tribulations", all of the tube operators at Precinct 13579 when, after being handed an enormous stack of demands, Ms. O remarks that there's a reason why she's never put all of them in the same room together. It delves into an Overly Long Gag where they go between laughing and being serious numerous times. Odd Todd does this in "Now You Don't See Me" when giving the second clue to Olive and Otto about where to find him. In the Cold Open of "O is for Opposite", a businesswoman named Pam is shown laughing with someone on the phone before suddenly stopping, saying "stocks", and hanging up. Subverted in "Orchid's Almost Half-Hour Talent Show" when Olympia asks Oona if she can do her talent on command, only for Oona to laugh and then say in dead earnest, "Of course." Xavier and Xena's Mirthless Laughter takes the form of this, as they'll laugh in a stiff manner at something amusing to them before suddenly stopping. In "Running on Empty", Opal and Orla stop at a cactus in the Sahara Desert to get some water in order to refuel their van. After attaching a faucet to it using a Faucet-inator gadget, Orla turns it on, and water slowly makes its way into a quart container. After a brief moment, Opal asks her if the process goes any faster, causing Orla to have this reaction: In "Down the Tubes", Orla and O'Shaughnessy go and confront a man known as High-Five at his house. He denies any involvement with the mix-up of the tubes, and to prove it, he pulls a "down low, too slow" trick on O'Shaughnessy. |
