Slavery is bad. However, for the majority of human history, it was very much the norm, and so it's not uncommon for it to show up in media. Most stories that feature slavery in some form will usually have freeing the slaves from the control of their masters be a plot point, or even be the driving force of the story. Most slave owners will be portrayed as cruel and sadistic, and when the slaves are freed, they will usually turn on their former masters to devastating effect. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })However, a freed slave will occasionally remain loyal to their former master. The reasons can vary greatly from personal to pragmatic, but in any case, the former slave will value service to their former master far more than whatever the wider world might offer. Someone who is Not Used to Freedom may simply not know what else to do with their life, while a household slave (such as a Kindly Housekeeper or a Mammy who has become very attached to their master's children) may stay on out of affection for them. Now, this trope has the potential for Unfortunate Implications, especially tying into the concept that enslaved peoples are "naturally submissive" and that, even when free, they will seek out white people to serve anyway. See also Happiness in Slavery, since both this trope and that are about someone who's okay serving someone else. The title heroine of Thaïs of Athens tends to free any slave she owns and, unless she marries them off immediately (like Clonaria and Za-Asht), they tend to stay with her as servants: Hesione is freed immediately after purchase, but stays to serve Thais until she falls in love with Nearchus and leaves with him, while Eris is freed after a rejected suitor attempts to kidnap her and ends up Gutted Like a Fish because while he can press charges against Thais for excessive force in defense of her "property", as a free woman, Eris' actions are entirely within her rights of self-defense. That said, Eris is decidedly unhappy about this, as she interprets it as Thais distancing herself from her, — at least until Thais explains that she would much rather see her as an equal and the Best Friend than a servant.

It's eventually revealed in Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale that Fairy Companions were specifically bred by The Fair Folk in order to prove they were useful enough to avoid genocide at the hands of humanity. Prime is the only example of an unbound fairy that we hear about during the game proper (having been freed by Alouette's father at some point in the past), though she continues to serve as Alouette's caretaker out of gratitude and to keep her free status a secret.

In An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride, Nephy allowed herself to be sold into slavery out of a combination of suicidal depression and Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life. Several chapters later, her master has figured out how to disenchant her Explosive Leash, and Nephy is grateful for that, but none of her problems have been solved: she still doesn't have a family or goals or anything she could build a life out of. So in the end she asks him to put the collar back on, and they go home and have dinner.

in the Discworld of A.A. Pessimal, Johanna Smith-Rhodes has been living in Ankh-Morpork for long enough to question the mores and attitudes of her native Rimwards Howondaland and has married a local man. Her snobbish aunt, wife of the Ambassador to Ankh-Morpork, is appalled she has no domestic servants and uses her influence to get her a complement of servants from Howondaland. Johanna realises she has to shake off some more unhelpful attitudes and informs the servants they are living in Ankh-Morpork and as far as she is concerned, apartheid law will not apply and she will treat them with the same degree of courtesy and respect she would show to white people. She would also pay them exactly the same rate a white servant in a comparable position would get. She ends up with absolutely loyal servants who love having been stepped up to Ankh-Morporkians, in a country that has no apartheid laws.

In North and South (U.S.), a number of former slaves remain at the Main plantation after slavery is repealed; some do because they have nowhere else to go, others stay in order to protect themselves from the marauding bands of ex-slaves and Confederate deserters that roam the countryside.

Superman: The Animated Series: In the Series Finale "Legacy, Part 2," Superman overthrows Darkseid, then throws him down to the slaves of Apokolips, telling them to Do with Him as You Will. To the Man of Steel's surprise, the slaves instead immediately begin caring for their leader, tending to the wounds given to Darkseid in his battle with Superman. In the second The Fangs of K'aath book, it's shown that after Raschid banned slavery many of his own and his father's former slaves have become some of his most loyal advisors. Notably one of the musketeers from the Slave Army that helped him win the Succession Crisis is captain of the royal guard and his father's former head concubine is now majordomo.

A Song of Ice and Fire features a few examples, mostly when it comes to Daenerys Targaryen, who believes Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil and goes on a Slave Liberation crusade. Daenerys is given three slaves — Irri, Jhiqui, and Doreah — as wedding gifts to be her handmaidens. She comes to regard them as friends, especially bonding with Doreah. After Khal Drogo dies, Daenerys declares all the slaves to be free. Her handmaidens choose to stay with her, both because they don't have anywhere else to go and because Daenerys is kind and protective. Daenerys is gifted a slave girl named Missandei by the Wise Masters of Astapor. She immediately frees Missandei and says she can choose to leave or stay. Missandei chooses to stay with Dany, as she's only ten and has no home to return to, serving as her scribe and translator. Dany acts as a Cool Big Sis towards her. Daenerys buys all the Unsullied - slave warrior eunuchs - then commands them to overthrow the Wise Masters and free all the slaves. As a result, the Unsullied choose to follow Daenerys as free men and have Undying Loyalty towards her. |

The Bible: In the ancient Biblical laws, after a slave has worked for six years, they will be freed on the seventh year. But if the slave declares that they remain devoted to their master, then the slave must have their ear pierced by their master at the doorpost, signifying that they'll serve their master for life.

Game of Thrones: After Daenerys had conquered Meereen and freed the city's slaves, an old man sought an audience with her and asked to be enslaved again to the family he had belonged to. They had been kind to him and cared for him in his old age, and he had tutored their children. There was no way he could survive without them, as he was too old to work and had no one else to call family. Dani ultimately decreed that if a former slave wants to continue working for their master, the master must draw up an employment contract. The Unsullied and Missandei also qualify, as they were slaves given to Danaerys. She immediately freed them but they chose to remain loyal to her cause. |

In The Rising of the Shield Hero, Raphtalia was brought by Naofumi at the start of the series mainly because he needed someone to act as offense to his defensive magic. However, while initially treating her harshly, he eases up when he notes she is having nightmares during a rest stop and starts treating with kindness and like a person rather than a tool. Eventually even removing the slave brand on her, effectively freeing her. However, she willingly sticks around and fights with him despite this, that she even re-brands herself willingly to show his devotion to him.
