To avoid the expensive costs of repair, or to hide the damage from their parents or Cranky Landlord, the characters will try to cover the damage with a poster, painting, or other decor one might typically hang on a wall. In most cases, the damage is in an unusual spot where decorations would generally not be mounted or is severe enough that it couldn't have been hidden in the first place.
