A gag in comedies involving driving has the driver removing the steering wheel (or handlebars) by accidentally or intentionally letting someone Take the Wheel. Often this means the vehicle will go out of control or become inoperable, though there are instances where reinserting the wheel (whether in its original place or otherwise) will allow regained control. Often happens with The Alleged Car. Compare with Broken Lever of Doom and Detachable Doorknob. |

A rare non-comedic example in Mad Max: Fury Road: Immortan Joe's vehicles all seem to have these, either as a security feature or to help free a trapped driver (see Real Life below). An early scene shows the War Boys retrieving them from their altar before they head out to pursue Furiosa and the Wives. The one on the War Rig gets lost early on, forcing Furiosa and Max to improvise with a wrench; Max is later able to procure a replacement during his Offscreen Moment of Awesome.

In the Bob's Burgers episode "Sea Me Now", it's a small plot point that Teddy built his own boat. He couldn't find another steering wheel, so before he shoves off, he removes the steering wheel from his truck and puts it on the boat. Then he puts it back when he goes ashore. After all, he can't be in two places at once, right? Anyway, he forgets about this, sinks his boat, and can't drive home. Teddy is not smart.
