Although mice, rats, and other rodents are usually seen as timid and cowardly animals who avoid danger by running and hiding from them, these particular rodents are pragmatic. They will use their assets and environments to their full advantage to survive and escape adversity. It is said that a rat will do anything to survive, no matter how disgraceful or dishonorable their tactics are. A resourceful rodent will rarely engage in head-on confrontations, or fight fairly for that matter because they know they can be easily overpowered. Since rodents are usually prey animals in the food chain, they have to be especially vigilant and more aware of their surroundings. For this reason, resourceful Rodents have to be smart enough to use their cunning and high intellect to escape from danger and outwit their stronger enemies. They often use their inventions to survive and utilize whatever they can find to defend themselves from others. The Resourceful rodent can fit any definition; a Genius Bruiser/Badass Bookworm who strategically fights their enemies with whatever they have at their disposal, The Engineer who invents, rebuilds, and repurposes items from junk, and the sly and underhanded rogue who uses their resourcefulness to hastily and stealthily evade enemies and catch them off-guard. Resourceful Rodents are not strictly anthropomorphic; a trained rodent, an intelligent rodent, and even an entire group of rodents who create strategies and hunting tactics to take on larger prey can fit here as well. It can go with Bamboo Technology, Improbable Weapon User, Improvisational Ingenuity, MacGyvering, and Scavenged Punk since the animal can display ingenuity by repurposing junk as tools, weapons, transportation, or inventions. It also goes with Guile Hero and The Trickster since the rodent in question has to defeat larger enemies who are vastly stronger than them. This has some elements of being Truth in Television. In real life, rats are actually very intelligent and social creatures; they are also scavengers who take whatever food they can get. In one experiment in 2016, rats have been observed to use tools to access food but could not use them to their full capabilities due to their poor eyesight. In addition, due to being small prey animals, rodents need to rely on caution and stealth to avoid enemies much stronger and larger than themselves. See also Intelligent Gerbil, Nice Mice, Screwball Squirrel, You Dirty Rat!, and Suicidal Lemmings. If the rats are half-human, then it's Rat Men. Rodents of Unusual Size may apply if the animal fits the criteria for the resourceful rodent. It may overlap with Mouse World, which often involves rodent characters repurposing human objects as tools. It may also overlap with Scavenged Punk (and therefore averting Scavengers Are Scum) since it can involve rodent characters using materials scavenged or stolen from humans. It may or may not be The Lab Rat (literally), which does the forensics and other research. |

The Great Mouse Detective: The rat population lives in dens inside the houses of humans and repurposes junk as household items. Basil also brags about his intelligence and cunning, which is shown by how he was able to escape a deathtrap by turning the traps against each other. He also survives a fall from Big Ben by using a broken propeller to climb back up to safety while Rattigan seemingly falls to his death.

Enter the Gungeon: The aptly-named Resourceful Rat is an anthropomorphic giant rat that managed to adapt himself to life in the Gungeon. He uses the ever-changing layout of the Gungeon to construct a giant maze to serve as his lair, he hoards a lot of Gungeon's treasures, and he has great expertise in scavenging and stealing stuff left by Gungeoneers, and even managed to construct a mecha out of scavenged stuff. It's stated that his resourcefulness would've let him reach The Gun That Can Kill The Past with ease, and the reason he didn't do so is that he's more interested in frustrating the Gungeoneers.

A Plague Tale: Innocence: At first, the man-eating rats in the game seem disorganized and chaotic, and are physically unable to enter the light, which is your main defense strategy. As their influence grows, they develop strategies to counter this, using their own bodies in formations and directed attacks to bust through the light and extinguish fires.

Ratatouille: Rémy is able to cook in a haute cuisine restaurant undetected by controlling a chef via pulling the hairs on his head. He also has an exceptional eye for ingredients, which is evident when he improves a soup using seemingly random ingredients scattered around the kitchen. The rest of his colony counts for this trope as well, since they were able to fashion together makeshift tables, boats, and even instruments using regular household items. |

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers: Gadget Hackwrench, a mouse, is the smartest member of the team as she's created all of the Rangers' vehicles and weapons out of garbage. The most notable example is the Ranger plane, which is a small dirigible made out of a bottle of bleach, a balloon, and plungers as landing gear.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number: Invoked by Richter Berg, the operative who wears a rat mask. Richter has to use whatever he can find as a weapon in Wrong Number, has to be absurdly quick and jumpy to survive his levels, and doesn't have his signature silenced submachine gun. He also survives a prison riot that was orchestrated by the Janitors by using a shard of glass as a weapon (known as a shard blade in the game) and stealing a prison officer's uniform so he can be evacuated with the staff.
