Role Swap AU	comment	In a Role Swap Plot, characters experience an Alternate Reality Episode in which they briefly switch roles with someone else, or travel to an Alternate Universe where their roles are different from that of their home universe. But what if the roles aren't switched during the story? What if they were switched from the start, and this new reality is completely treated as the norm? Then you have this trope. Also known as "Role Reversal", a Role Swap AU is a common What If? premise (especially in Fanfiction) in which two or more characters switch roles and/or alignments with each other, with the subsequent story exploring how plot events alter, diverge, or stay the same because of this swap. Superhero stories are especially prone to this, but the trope doesn't need powers or a costumed identity. The key thing is that both the character and their alternate universe role are already known to the story's audience and probably part of the main cast — but, back in the usual universe, this role in the story is held by a different major character. Compare Film Fic, a similar fan fiction premise where a familiar story is retold using characters from a different fandom. It might overlap with Adaptational Protagonist, when either minor or major characters acquire the main lead role in an adaptation.
