A character is being fooled by an illusion, but for reasons that may vary, the illusion is finally destroyed. Said illusion could be the work of a Shapeshifter, a Lotus-Eater Machine, or The Final Temptation. In order to break the illusion, characters may employ various methods. One common approach is spotting A Glitch in the Matrix, where keen observers may notice subtle flaws in the illusionist's mimicry, such as slight discrepancies in appearance or behavior. This attention to detail can lead to the revelation of the deception. Additionally, characters might rely on their own Heroic Spirit to break through the illusion, as doubt gives way to determination and fear is overcome. The Power of Friendship or the recollection of past experiences can serve as a powerful counterforce to the false reality, helping them break free from the deceptive spell. In more fantastical settings, characters may harness their magical abilities or enchanted artifacts to dispel illusions. Through incantations, gestures, or the help of extraordinary creatures, they disrupt the illusory fabric, revealing the reality hidden behind the façade. The process of dispelling the illusion can be a pivotal moment in a story, revealing hidden truths, testing the characters' resolve, and driving the plot forward. Compare Puff of Logic, in which the illusion vanishes when the victim disbelieves it. A Glamour is often dispelled this way, causing Glamour Failure. See also Epiphanic Prison, in which Shattering the Illusion allows the character to learn something. As a reveal trope, consider this a Spoiler Warning! |

Monster Rancher has this happen twice in "Underground Adventure", when the Searchers are stalked by the Master of Illusion Joker. When a massive fireball seems to be bearing down on everyone, Golem charges at it to protect Mocchi and Genki after the former trips. He punches straight through it, and is very surprised by the lack of heat. Later, when Joker traps everyone in various illusions save for Hare, he realizes what's happening and punches Joker before he can attack anyone. |

Lindsey Stirling's "Transcendence" music video is themed around her discovering that the projected clothes, backgrounds, places, and so on are not real. When she realises she can step outside the image of a dress to reach for her violin, she is at first hesitant because of the shadows this casts on other projections, but then dances over the scenes like nobody's business, to the anger of the man creating the illusions.

The Twilight Zone (1959): In "The Arrival", Grant Sheckly's theory that Flight 107, which arrived without any crew or passengers, is nothing more than an illusion is proven when he puts his arm in the spinning propeller and the plane vanishes. His fellow investigators Bengston and Paul Malloy disappear as well, though, and it's soon revealed that the entire episode has been a hallucination that Sheckly has been having.

In one Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane comic, Lois hits her head while diving. While Superman rescues her before she can drown, he ultimately finds out that the concussion knocked her unconscious and that she's having a very pleasant dream, one she has no reason to wake up from: she and Superman are finally married. Supes tries to wake her by spoiling the idealness of the dream world, first by revealing his secret identity and then by turning their dream children into handfuls. Lois still manages to find some way to bend the dream back on its ideal course until Superman introduces a new character, Lulu, her replacement at the Daily Planet and implies his dream self is in love with her now. Heartbroken, Lois wakes up.

The Archmage's keep in the fourth Sorcery! book contains illusory traps as safeguards against intruders (like you), but with obtainable clues beforehand you can bypass these illusions. Notable instances include the burning corridor of illusory flames (which you can pretend it isn't real and walk across, unscathed) and the God-headed Hydra (an insanely powerful monster which is actually fake - let yourself be hit by the monster and you'll realize it doesn't actually exist).

Magic: The Gathering Gerrard does a Face–Heel Turn in order to win Hanna back from the dead. As he's going to give her Urza's head, however, he suddenly realizes she's nothing but an illusion created by Yawgmoth. He shatters the illusion by slaying the fake Hanna. The trope is represented mechanically in cards like Illusionary Servant and Phantom Beast: targeting them with a spell or ability breaks the illusion, causing them to vanish. |

Sock the right one and all three copies will be reduced to dust. The catch is that if you attempt to use any move that hits more than one of the oni, it will fail and it will count as a missed attack. In Negima! Magister Negi Magi, Negi's part is en route to rescue him in the depths of Library Island, but Yue notices that it's taking far too long to descend... They are soon greeted by a small mage and her not-so-small magical creatures, and Takahata, their former teacher. Yue dares Takahata to hit her, which he naturally does... And she comes to the quick conclusion through some deduction in the illusion's errors (namely that he wouldn't hit their former students and his speech patterns are slightly amiss) that they're trapped in an illusion, and casts a spell using Asuna's ability to completely shatter the illusion, leaving the flustered child mage completely at a loss.

Saiyuki Reload combines this with a non-lethal case of Hoist by His Own Petard. Sanzo, Gojyo and Hakkai are hypnotized by Zakuro, a demon illusionist recruited to get rid of them. Even though the three are aware that they're merely trapped in an illusion, Zakuro's powers are strong enough to manipulate their senses anyway, countering any attempt to break out. When part of Kougaiji's group catches up with them, Dokugakuji proceeds to rescue Gojyo by knocking him out. Sanzo and Hakkai decide that this is not an option for them, as being unconscious would only leave them defenseless, but Zakuro's next illusion makes them appear submerged in water and unable to breathe. Hakkai "drowns" and faints, but for Sanzo, who was found in a river as a baby, the illusion triggers a memory of his master and father figure, Koumyou, which proves enough to make him immune to Zakuro's tricks.

Many, many Fighting Fantasy books have the villains being a Master of Illusion, attempting to trick the heroes by pretending to be their allies, but there are ways for the player to see through their disguises. The most common item are magic rings which can dispel illusions, showing up in City of Thieves (1983), Island of the Lizard King, Crypt of the Sorcerer and Return to Firetop Mountain (also its direct sequel Legend of Zagor) - upon being worn, the player hero can see through illusory tricks and defend themselves in time. Failing to collect these rings however and the player will instead receive a bad ending where they get killed in a Non-Standard Game Over. Stealer of Souls pits the player against the evil wizard Mordraneth who is a powerful illusionist, but halfway through you can obtain a new magic, called "Dispel Illusion", which does exactly what it says. Beneath Nightmare Castle have the sorceress, Senyakhaz attempting to subdue you with her magic spells, including creating an illusion of a Giant Spider. But if you already had a clue beforehand, you'll simply run through the spider monster without a fight, for you already knew it to be an illusion. |

Happens literally in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Frame of Mind", in which Riker realises he's actually a prisoner in a virtual reality, and the illusion literally shatters like chunks of glass.
