Sometimes a character will need to come up with a word that starts with a certain letter, but wants or needs to say one that doesn't qualify. The solution: stick the necessary letter in front of the desired word and call it a day! Often done to make a word fit into an acronym or Alliterative List. The letters X and Z are the most common victims of this, due to being the least common initial letters in English. Compare Xtreme Kool Letterz, Recursive Acronym. Sub-trope of Shoehorned Acronym. |

Similarly, in Magic: The Gathering, the colors are represented as B for Black, R for Red, G for Green, W for White, and U for blUe. One explanation for why it's this way round is because Black stole "B" (because it's the colour of selfishness), and "L" is used for "Life". It also helps make the Colour Pie somewhat pronounceable (WUBRG ["woo-burg"] rather than, say, WBKRG).

In Amazing Spider-Man #264, Red 9 tells Spider-Man that he lives by "the three F's - football, fighting, and women." Spidey hangs a lampshade on it by pointing out that Red 9 can't spell.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: "Destiny Board" puts "Spirit Message" cards onto the field and gives you an automatic win. The former represents a Ouija Board (censored and removed in non-Japanese versions) that shows the letter "D" in the Japanese version and the letter "F" in all other versions. The latter contain the letters "E," "A," "T" and "H" in their names in the Japanese version and the letters "I," "N", "A" and "L" in all other versions. The Moe archetype "Magician Girl" derives from "Dark Magician Girl" (or "Black Magician Girl" in Japan and Korea), and the first letters of their names form the word "Black". The members of the archetype include "(Toon) Dark Magician Girl (the Dragon Knight)," "Berry Magician Girl," "Lemon Magician Girl," "Apple Magician Girl," "Chocolate Magician Girl" and "Kiwi Magician Girl." The card "Hero Flash!!" can only be used by banishing "H - Heated Heart," ""E - Emergency Call," "R - Righteous Justice," "O - Oversoul." Its artwork features all the letters from the artwork of those cards. "True King of All Calamities"'s Japanese name contains "V.F.D." which comes from the Latin phrase Vicarius Filii Dei, read as the "The Beast". Its associated cards have their names contain those letters with meanings: "True King Lithosagym, the '''D'''isaster"; "True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer" (known as "Shinryūō Baharstos Führer" in the Japanese version); "True King Agnimazud, the Vanisher." |
