Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Skeletons may be seen, depending on the work, as either good or evil. Sometimes, they may bump things up a notch. The hostile ones may not be just skeletons, but something more. They can be an Ancient Evil or a creation of a God of Evil, or something else. Whatever the case, this trope overlaps with Eldritch Abomination and they are usually going to be an Omnicidal Maniac. If they have a Soul Jar, then this overlaps with Our Liches Are Different. This trope is not limited to The Undead. This trope can also apply to both the living and the deceased, though it overlaps with Undead Abomination if they are the latter. If they actually have a skeletal appearance and it isn't a sort of outfit or clothing, then this overlaps with Dem Bones. If it is the reverse, then it overlaps with Skeletons in the Coat Closet. Subverted in Reaper Man, where the new Death keeps the Grim Reaper look but doesn't have a skull, just a hood filled with smoke with a crown floating on it. This infuriates the real Death (who is a seven-foot-tall skeleton with blue eyelights) to no end because while he just does his Duty, the new Death is actively evil and enjoys killing people with the goal of eventually exterminating all life on the Disc.

Beginning with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983), the Big Bad Skeletor was a Magic Knight with a muscular physique but a seemingly empty skull under his hood. He routinely hatched plots to conquer Eternia (and sometimes other worlds as well). He would remain the primary villain of later iterations of the franchise.

Lord English of Homestuck infamy has a Skull for a Head, and his multiple abominable deeds include killing numerous Horrorterrors, ghosts of the afterlife, and the very author of the comic. Every character who's not working with him ends up plotting to destroy him at some point to stop his rampage through paradox space, but he can only be killed through glitches in reality itself.

In Minecraft, the Wither is a three-headed skeletal being that is the most dangerous monster in the game, as it rains down life-draining wither skulls upon anything that strokes its ire, that being anything not already unliving. It can blast or eat its way through nearly any block, including Obsidian, and when you summon the Wither to the world, the sky turns gray.

In Kubo and the Two Strings, the guardian of the Sword Unbreakable is a giant skeleton, patterned off the gashadokuro. (See Folklore)
