Essentially the idea that when you're a slave, you need something to show it. This trope centers on the times when a character who either is or was a slave bears some mark that sets them apart from other people. Most frequently this is either a burnt on brand, a tattoo, or even a serial number. Often, a slave who has been freed will have this mark removed or, if that is not possible, altered. Another option is for them to display this mark openly, as if daring someone to comment. Compare Mark of Shame, which this brand is to many slaves, and compare Group-Identifying Feature. See also Slave Collar, which is another way of marking a character enslaved, and Slave Race, where just being born a certain race is enough to mark you as property. For supernatural versions, see Claimed by the Supernatural. More advanced societies might make you a Scannable Man instead. |

Dragon Age: Casteless dwarves are marked by facial tattoos. Tranquil mages (mages who have had their magical ability forcibly stripped from them) have a sun brand on their forehead, which is apparently a symbol of the Chantry. This is only actually visually present in Dragon Age II, but it is mentioned in the first game. It also resembles a lobotomy scar, which is pretty close to what Tranquilization is supposed to represent. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, Solas claims that the Vallaslin markings the Dalish apply to their faces were originally slave brands that the elven nobility of Arlathan would put on their slaves to honor their gods. A Dalish Inquisitor is understandably horrified. |

The Rising of the Shield Hero: Slaves are branded with a mark that can be used to cause them pain if they try to disobey a direct order from their master. This effect isn't absolute, as Naofumi notices that Raphtalia has been learning what she can and can't get away with. The brand's magic can also be configured by the master to give the slave varying degrees of freedom, such as being allowed to speak, act independently or lie to their master, how far they can be from their master at any one time or how severe the punishment will be if they try to defy their master (up to and including instant death). Naofumi's particular abilities allow him to give powerful bonuses in growth to anyone branded as his slave, which gives him reason to keep them branded even if they come to follow him willingly. In some, but not all, adaptations, a slave brand is placed on Princess Malty upon finally being taken to task for past actions. The brand is specifically meant to compel truthful answers to interrogation, but the culprit is such a Compulsive Liar that they continue to lie even while fully aware of and having experienced the effects firsthand. |

In Naruto, the Hyuuga clan brands all of their branch house members with a swastika tattoo upon their forehead which destroys their unique genetic abilities upon death, preventing outsiders from stealing them. While this might sound like a reasonable precaution in a world where bloodline theft is a common tactic between warring villages, the tattoos can also be activated at will by main house members with a secret handsign to cause intense pain or death, making the branch house members slaves in all but name to the main house. All known branch house members are so shamed by their "Caged Bird Seals" that they keep the tattoos covered up.

The mark of slavery for house elves in Harry Potter is the lack of real clothes; most wear pillowcases and tea-towels and such. Being given clothes is equivalent to being freed...and usually regarded as a fate worse than death. This makes perfect sense when you understand that house elves are normally freed only if their service is grossly inadequate, so being freed is the equivalent of being sacked in utter disgrace. This - along with the fact that Dobby was an exception among house-elves - is the thing Hermione fails to comprehend.

The Jaffa of Stargate SG-1 have a mark either tattooed or branded onto their foreheads. The appearance of the mark is determined by which Goa'uld they serve. Note that the golden brand is a mark of honor: it signifies the Goa'uld in question's First Prime—the Jaffa head of his military forces. (Bra'tac was apparently Apophis' retired First Prime, hence the brand despite not being First Prime at the time). Lower-ranking Jaffa get tattoos done in black ink. The first episode also included some priests with silver-filled brands, but whether this is supposed to be a general trait of the Jaffa priesthood (whom we never really get to see) or just Early-Installment Weirdness is never made clear. The gold brand involves cutting open the skin on the forehead and pouring molten gold into the wound.

One Piece Slaves of the World Nobles/Celestial Dragons are marked with a unique brand known as the "Hoof of the Flying Dragon." This brand is meant to impress upon them the fact that they are less than human. Many members of the Sun Pirates, including their first captain Fisher Tiger, were former slaves of the World Nobles freed by Tiger himself. Upon joining the crew, all of the former slaves had their slave mark altered into a tattoo of a Red Sun, which was also the crew's jolly roger. This was done to make sure that the Marines and Bounty Hunters could not tell who on the crew was a former slave, as all crew members including non-slaves had this tattoo branded on them such as Jinbe and Arlong. The Gorgon Sisters were another group of former slaves freed by Fisher Tiger. Upon returning to their homeland in Amazon Lily, the trio took great pains to hide their slave mark, claiming they had been cursed by a Gorgon and that anyone who saw the eye of the gorgon on their backs would be petrified. They also claimed that the Gorgon curse was the source of their abilities, since most of the Kuja tribe don't know about Devil Fruits, which the sisters were force-fed for the entertainment of the Celestial Dragons. Nami saw her Arlong tattoo as this because she was forced to serve Arlong like a slave due to her skills as a Navigator. After she had stabbed out the tattoo, she had a new one put in its place resembling a pinwheel with a tangerine growing from it, to honor her adopted parents. When Koala escaped Mary Geoise with the rest of the slaves and stowed away on the Sun Pirates ship in an attempt to return home, Fisher Tiger was so horrified by how broken she was that he branded her with the Sun Pirates jolly roger to hide her slave brand. Presumably she still bears it on her back in the present. |

Final Fantasy: Red XIII of Final Fantasy VII has something kind of like that in his "XIII" tattoo. He was a research specimen; not much different from slavery, though Hojo probably wouldn't call it that. The l'Cie in Final Fantasy XIII all bear brands indicating which Fal'Cie they serve. It's also a Mark of Shame because if you're an l'Cie to a Pulse Fal'Cie, you become hated by the people of Cocoon. The brand also functions as a timer, becoming more elaborate the longer it takes a l'Cie to complete their Focus. If the brand becomes complete before the Focus is done, the l'Cie is turned into Cie'th. Bearers in Final Fantasy XVI are made into "Branded" with a tattoo over their left cheek, marking them as property. The brand is written in poisoned ink; if it's damaged in any way, it will spread into the bearer's blood and kill them. It takes a skilled surgeon to attempt to remove the brand, and even those who survive have to endure days of agony afterward. |
